Whole Foods 3/18/2006

This grocery store doubles as an inspiration to aspiring cooks. They offer cooking classes. They have organic foods galore, organic flowers, a large selection of wines and interesting beers, ostrich eggs (in the section near the peppers and cactus leaves), and extensive cafeteria which is rapidly becoming one of my favorite places to eat, imaginative/yummy prepped foods (in the butcher area), a nut roasting station, they claim to have over 300 cheeses, and an astounding bakery. Well, in terms of grocery stores, anyway. This one is more on par with Mozart's maybe. If you like soup, I highly recommend the 3 Squash, over in the cafeteria. If you have been wondering why you have to travel to Italy or Las Vegas for good gelato, you've come to the right place... the Blackberry Merlot (or maybe Cabernet, it was a red wine) tastes like summer break. The pizzas are wood-fired, and I think they are hand tossed, too. They have a huge selection of vegetarian friendly food in the salad bar- yummy curried tofu. You can order the food there, pay for it up front and then eat it in one of 2 dining areas. You can also taste-test. Things seem to be a bit pricier than Trader Joe's, but the store is about 3x the size, with a more wide ranging selection. Another tidbit: they offer 5 cents credit if you re-use your bags from their store next time around. more
