Opening a new pizza restaurant is tough. You've got several well-established national competitors in almost every neighborhood, and numerous independents all vying for attention.
Still, I'm always looking for new place to purchase my pies. I recently received a grand opening promotion coupon from Mama's Island Pizza in Kailua town (next to Foodland) that promised free salad, free breadsticks, and free drinks (notice that it's "and" not "or"), and all that was asked of me was to give them a chance.
A friendly order taker, who asked me what I wanted to order, answered my call. This was a refreshing difference from the national chains, where the disinterested voice on the other end seems more interested in reciting a "daily special" rather than treating you like you are semi-intelligent and already know what you want.
I ordered an Island Veggie Spectacular. In addition to the free items, I was also told that the veggie was on special this week, which was another $5 off. Again, very refreshing compared to the national chains, where fine print, restrictions, and additional surcharges are often the norm.
Most important, however, was the quality of the pizza. Ingredients were all top-notch. Red onions are used, along with lots of fresh bell peppers and mushrooms. The crust is on the thin side and very flavorful.
Mama's is definitely a do-again. I'm looking forward to trying their other specialty pizzas.
