This post is mostly for PR professionals considering joining a professionals organization. I would look into joining a different professionals group than Public Relations Society of America. I found them to be very unorganized on the national level with making sure new members receive the publications that are part of the benefit of being a member. I had to call and e-mail multiple times to find out why I wasn’t receiving the publications and even then, I never received the back-issues that I missed out on (so I was shorted even though I paid for them). Experience with this organization also depends a great deal on how involved your local chapter of PRSA is in the organization. I lived in two different areas while I was a member of this organization and was discouraged by the leadership and chapters in both areas. One of the areas I wasn’t being notified of events that I was paying to be able to attend and network, despite talking to both the president of the chapter and the person responsible for letting members know about events. If that is any indication of their “communication” skills I would be very afraid to hire that PR associate! They also took forever in removing my name and information from their mailing lists once I left the organization. I was still receiving e-mail from them after leaving for over three years!
