Worst Sushi in Miami 10/19/2009

I have tried almost every sushi restaurant I can think of in Miami: Shibui, Matsuri, Sushi Maki, Sakura, Akashi, Nobu, Bond Street, Miyako, Mia, etc. All of those places listed above have delivered good quality food consistently. I recently was referred to Obba Sushi after a rave review from my friend. I was greeted with a very unenthusiastic waitress, and after we gave our order, we got our appetizer and rolls. Tuna Tartare comes on a bed of rice, which is unconventional, but it tasted fine. There was not that much tuna but we ordered a small instead of a large portion. There were cubes of avocados in the plate, and I tried one, it tasted fine. The rest of the pieces were ALL ROCK hard. Very offputting, but we enjoyed the tuna, and did not feel like complaining. After ordering something called the Temptation roll, it arrives with seared tuna on the top of it, inside the roll is ONLY avocado, a big piece. Needless to say the pieces were rock hard, and not ripened at all. We call our waitress and tell her, she immediately speaks back: ""Oh yeah. You know its not in season. We don't really get the fresh avocadoes, etc. etc."" We tell her, if you go to any Japanese restaurant in Miami, at any time of year, you will find ripened avocados because they are an essential ingredient in Japanese cuisine. You go to Chipotle, and they have pretty good guacamole, as well as any Mexican restaurant in Miami. We ask for the manager, she tells us there is no manager, but the sushi chef is inside, as she gestures to the sushi chef, onlooking without a care in the world. I don't know if she expected us to get up and go talk to him, but given that we were the only customers in the place, you would think he would come and apologize. If I was that chef, I would be terribly embarrassed. After a long day, the two of us were very disappointed. The chef had to CUT the avocado into small pieces and he would clearly notice that it was very hard as the knife hits the avocado instead of gliding through as it would with a ripened one. I will never go back to this place, and I suggest you avoid this restaurant at all costs. Pros: N/A Cons: Poor Serivce, Poor Ingredients (see review) more
