One-stop Korean and Japanese Market-- almost. 11/28/2007

New Oriental Market is predominantly Korean, but carries a great selection of Japanese products, as well, including snacks, noodles, rice, and frozen foods. The store is fairly clean and always organized-- every time I go there a worker is shuffling through the shelves, reorganizing them. They have the best selection of Japanese and Korean snacks, drinks, and frozen treats in town, and their fridge is always full of a variety of coffees, teas, yogurt and fruit drinks, and sodas. They have a fantastic seaweed isle, so if you need kombu, wakame, furikake, nori sheets for sushi or you just have a hankering to munch on the yummy Korean-style snack sheets, they have numerous varieties of each. Their tea selection is also excellent, ranging from simple green and black teas to ginseng and barley tea. The frozen food section is plentiful and you can find fish, fish products, dumplings, and meats, among a variety of other things. Kimchi of all different types and ingredients necessary to make kimchi at home are also in abundance. New Oriental sells pretty much every kitchen implement needed for Korean and Japanese cooking, eating, cleaning, and storing. They even have things you don't need but will want to buy because they're so darned cute. A selection of household goods are available, as well, such as blankets and slippers. On the down-side, their vegetable section leaves much to be desired, and normally what they do have is kind of sad looking. That, and they do not have a fresh meat or fish section. Barring that, though, New Oriental Market is great for Korean and Japanese shopping, especially for prepared foods and kitchen tools. Pros: Convenient, Ample parking, Good selection Cons: Grocery is limited to mostly prepared foods, Produce is not good more
