Great atmosphere, hit and miss food 10/7/2005

The atmosphere of this nostalgic cafe in an old rail care makes for a hit and miss menu. We dined here late one evening, exhausted after a long trip and looking for anything still opened that had hot food. A big bowl of portuquese kale soup sounded quite good, with a cold salad. We wished we had ordered the big burgers and fries, as they looked far better going by on the trays. The soup was only fair; the salad was terrible. Old tired lettuce with brown edges (a definate miss), but, the best, thick, white, ambrosia like blue cheese dressing I've ever had (a definate hit). We'll go back, but mostly for the cheerful service (I even liked the leering waiter who sat me), probably burgers and fries, and the charming building. Skip the salads, ask for the dressing to go and then try to recreate it. more
