Great steak.... 6/21/2006

Saltgrass is a casual, laid back steak house. When you walk in, you will hear country music playing and the decor is different signs for gas stations and things like "swimming holes." There is a bar at the front and they have both smoking and non-smoking sections. Even on a night when they are busy, we have never waited long to be seated because it is pretty big inside. If you know that you're going to be taking a large group (or going on a Friday or Saturday when they're more busy), they do have call ahead seating! We like to start off with an appetizer when we go. Last night we got the spinach artichoke dip, which was one of their "featured" appetizers. It is served with tostada chips and salsa. The spinach artichoke dip was OK, but I felt like it was kind of dry and definitely wasn't the best I have ever had. I did enjoy the salsa, though. I like their Wagon Boss Top Sirloin and my husband loves their Cattleman's Prime Rib. We have always been very pleased with the quality of their steaks. They have plenty of flavor and so far, we've always had them cooked exactly like we have asked! Their entrees are served with your choice of a dinner salad, caesar salad, or cup of soup. I usually get the dinner salad which is comparable to dinner salads at other restaurants I have been to and nothing special. You also get a loaf of their Shiner Bock Beer Bread. This stuff is yummy and is always gone too fast! You also get your choice of a side item. I've had both the baked potato and the garlic mashed potatoes. Both are good, but again comparable with other places that I have been. We've always been pleased with the service that we have received here. You are usually seated promptly, and someone is usually at your table within minutes to take a drink order and explain the specials. Our food always arrives quickly and thus far, it has always been at a good temperature. Our servers have always checked back on us and refilled our drinks frequently. Someone from management is usually walking around interacting with customers, as well. Overall, we've always been happy with our experience here, but it is pricey. We drank water last night and for our two steaks and the appetizer, it was almost $60. Outback Steakhouse is comparable in the atmosphere and the food, but it is a little less expensive. You could go to a "nicer" steak restaurant (such as Steak and Ale) and probably spend about the same amount, so if you're looking for a more intimate dining experience for the money, you may want to look elsewhere. more
