Mansfield State Commemorative Area 8/1/2005

This state park is several miles outside of Mansfield, Louisiana, but there are signs to follow. (I got there without making a wrong turn.) The area is extremely quiet and solemn. At the entrance gate are three monolithic memorials to the troops that were slain there. These memorials are rather old and in need of cleaning and re-finishing. Somehow their condition reminds you of death and decay. There are newer memorials at the museum entrance. The grounds are well-kept and Civil War re-enactments take place there. There is a museum, picnic area and restroom facilities. The facilities could use a new coat of paint and some new landscaping, but you can tell the site is well-loved and taken care of despite obvious budget constraints. Its a perfect place for a family or group outing or a class field trip. Parking is close to the museum for those who don't want to walk much, but the fields are suitable for children (and adults) to walk around in or take a frisbee break. I recommend taking a picnic lunch as the park is out of town and not near restaurants. Depending on the size of your group, plan to spend about half a day there. Larger groups may need more time for everyone to get a turn at the restroom facilities, count heads before leaving, etc. more
