We've been going to Capt. Ed's for years. We love the atmosphere and love getting stoned. We normally buy the gift certificates which provide us with additional credit . Buy $50 and get an extra $25. For the past 15 years, the expiration date on the original $50 certificate was honored even past the expiration date, the logic being that it was the same as cash. The extra $25 cert had to be used by the expiration date. No problems. As late as 12/05/ 2014, we were told by a long time waitress that the policy was still in effect. We have just learned that the "new" management has decided that the outstanding $50 certs will not be honored after 12/24/2014. We tried to eat there on 12/23/2014 but, ironically, they were open only to sell gift certs. So now we're we are stuck with a $ 50 cert that we can't use since we're not available on Christmas Eve due to family obligations. As I suspect, there are a number of other people in the same situation. We are making calls to see if we can find someone who will take the cert (for free) and use it. We accept our responsibility for not using the cert before the expiration date but we also think that the "new" management is being unreasonable. They could very easily provide a thirty day grace period and not force a bunch of locals have to jump through hoops to either use the cert or lose it. And it's the locals that are affected. The ones that support this place through the cold winter months. We bought new certs before we knew about this change. We will be using them up as soon as possible because we suspect that once the locals realize they're getting screwed, they won't be going back and this place will be out of business before the end of next year. We won't be back once we've used the certs we bought. BTW, The person who we talked to about all this identified himself as the "new" owner. We were taken aback since he looked like some homeless person. And wasn't pleasant to deal with.
