Best

this is a very lovely, zen, style spa that offers great massages and other spa services. I go regularly for a massage, which is always excellent, and the people who work there are...

Worst

I recently had a facial here and left feeling somewhat dissatisfied and duped. When I booked the appointment I chose the type of facial I wanted based partly on what was described...

Great massages, don't get a facial 5/1/2007

I've been getting massages at D'mai for awhile and love their massages. Service by all staff is friendly and attentive except for the woman who does facials. I have loved all my experiences at D'mai except for two facials. First, she talks too much during the facial and will try to get you to upgrade to a more expensive facial. When she was examining my face, she said I needed to get my eyebrows waxed but I didn't think it was neccessary but she kept persisting, even saying to me, "You like looking like that?" She also scrapes your face when she removing blemishes. It hurts. Plus, she kept asking me personal questions which I didn't think was appropriate during a facial. All in all, avoid the facials. Get a massage! Or waxing. The woman who does waxing there is amazing. Barely hurt for sensitive areas and she was the best waxing treatment I have ever had. Pros: an oasis in the city Cons: facials are not fun more

Embarrassing! 4/21/2007

-----To be clear, this spa is gorgeous and spacious. It smells amazing. Some of the staff are wonderful. I've had 2 massages that were out of this world. 1 facial that was amazing. I have dealt with two amazingly warm and welcoming receptionists. However, I have also had three nail services that were freaking awful! For almost sixty dollars once would hope for good service and great nails. En contraire; I've had a tech answer her mobile, eat food while doing my pedicure, leave me alone for fifteen minutes to contemplate if they will ever come back to actually paint my toe nails, and say degrading and disgusting things in Spanish (yes, I understood her). SHE smudged MY nail and was upset with me for it, she very roughly fixed with while obviously fuming and then told me she didn't have time for my scheduled waxing. What?! I paid what for this? I left work early for this? I hired an after school sitter for this? I have been looking forward for weeks to THIS? -----A few months ago, a woman at the check-in desk asked my sister if she was pregnant (which she was NOT) and then behaved as if we were lying. She told us we should have to pay $15 more for a prenatal massage. My sister was mortified! The owner should be humiliated by the low standards he/she allows! -----Pretty spa with good service sometimes. I for one don't want to play roulette with my money, time or relaxation. Pros: Beautiful. Good service if you're lucky. Cons: Mean reception woman. Horrid nailcare. more

Terrific!!! 4/19/2007

I love this place. Without a question one of the spa's around. The space is beautiful and the staff is professional and knows what they are doing. I have received both facials and massages here and I have never been disappointed. From the time I walk in the front door to the time I leave, I feel as though I have been taken to another place. No hustle and bustle just relaxation. I highly recommend d'mai. Pros: Neigborhood, services, clean Cons: none more

Best Services 4/8/2007

I recently visited d'mai for my ??? time as I am a frequent visitor. I love the services, staff and atmosphere. They are a top-notch spa with a neighborhood feel. I travel often for my work, so when I return a little pampering is on the menu. Thanks d'mai for taking such good care of me! Pros: Everything more

Not Very Good 4/4/2007

I think its important when you see so many good reviews on a place to be thruthful about the experience. While the staff is friendly and perfectly professional, I have to admit the manicure/pedicure was awful. Not only did she rush, but the nail polish was all over the place and she corrected it so many times I finally had to leave in frustration. It was probably one of the worst manicure/pedicures i have ever had, not too mention the most expensive. Very, very disappointing. I would not recommend you let them go near your face if they cant handle your toes. Pros: Nice Friendly staff Cons: Terrible manicure/pedicures more

Out of this World 3/23/2007

Wow I had no idea of the size of spa, it opens up to a whole other world! The space is beautiful and so calm and every possible detail has been thought of. I have visited many other spas both in New York and out and I must say dmai ranks up there with some of the best. I had a chance to chat with the owner, Daniella who is absolutely delightful and inspiring. I received a massage from Richard and a facial from Shin, both of these services were lovely and left feeling like I was floating on a cloud. Great services, great staff, great EVERYTHING! Pros: Beautiful, professional, clean, services Cons: none more

From Professional to Professional. 2/22/2007

As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I get massages quite regularly. I also work in a massage school and know a lot of massage therapists and have been to a lot of spas. I will honestly say (and this place is my competition) that if you are looking for a wonderful, restful spa experience in Brooklyn, that this is the place to go. It is beautifully decorated with every detail considered of your experience in mind. The feeling is peaceful and serene as soon as you come in from the busy street. You will be greeted by friendly and helpful people throughout your visit. The practitioners and talented, caring and happy to be working there (they have told me so)...this is rare in the spa world. If you are looking for a spa day, treat yourself...You deserve it Pros: It's a treat Cons: Locker room is small and a bit of a tight fit. more

Slamin' Services 2/7/2007

My girlfrind got me a massage as a gift (which I appreciated) getting me to go - was another story. As a guy who has never thought too much about going to a spa, it took a little extra push. Now I am wondering what took me so long to discover this! I have had soreness in my back for as long as I can remember, my therapist worked out every last pain and I left feeling better than I have in years. I was also provided with some stretches that would be helpful to me. Cool place, nice people, slamin' services! Without a doubt I will be back! Pros: space, felt welcomed, quiet, clean more

New York At It's Best 1/2/2007

I was visiting New York for my first time over the holidays and for a change of pace I stayed in Brooklyn. As I am from the Midwest everything was an eye opener. I was walking along 5th Avenue and happened upon D'mai, with a few moments of wondering if I should go in or not, I walked in and booked myself a facial and a massage - neither of which I have ever had! A few hours later I arrived back for my appointment ( a little nervous) because I really did not know what to expect. I was treated with such kindness and warmth that I felt instantly at ease. I loved my time there, I left feeling like a new person. When I got home, I decided that treating myself is on the books for 2007. Thanks D'mai for taking such good care of me, If I ever return to New York , I will be knocking at your door. Pros: No Attitude, Lovely Space, Welcoming Cons: none more

A +++++++++++++ 12/21/2006

As a guy who just recently began to understand that it's really ok to take care of your skin - I cannot say enough about the services here. At first, to be honest I was a little unsure (robe, slippers) but I have become a regular and my skin looks and feels great. I really appreciate the kindness I am shown every time I walk in the door. This place is an amazing spa! Pros: skilled, friendly, welcoming Cons: none more

Best Around 12/5/2006

Simply put. I love this place. I have always gotten great services and have always been greeted with warm welcomes and smiles. The staff is professional and respectful. If you want a true spa experience, this is the place to go. Pros: professional, clean, smells great Cons: none more

Too much hype but decent. 11/20/2006

Maybe i went on an off day but i wasn't impressed. I waited for about 20 minutes for my massage. which is something that i have never experianced at any other spa. The massage itself was decent but I have been to many other places that were better. This isn't a place I would go out of my way for. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Nothing out of the ordinary more

Best Bodywork in Brooklyn 11/20/2006

I came to D'mai on the advice of a friend, and in dire straights. I had been having awful headaches for the past few weeks, and with my history of TMJ and a recent stretch of high-stress at work, I was in desperate need of some quality massage. My therapist, Micah, didn't disappoint...true to the words of my friend, his hands are magic. He gave me breathing exercises that have really helped (I think I forgot how to breathe properly) In fact, I felt so transformed after our time together I booked another session for next week. The relaxing smell of the spa and the quality of the robes are a nice touch, and I made good use of the sauna...Micah told me to take my time, and I did. A great escape and a real place for healing and rejuvenation. Just what I needed! Pros: Incredibly therapeutic massage, hot sauna, nice smell Cons: Hard to find parking more

Great Service 11/13/2006

I had some family members staying at the new Holiday Inn Express on Union Street and they wanted to have a spa treatment from somewhere in the neighborhood. I have heard many wonderful things about D'mai so they were my choice and thankfully after speaking with their wonderful staff they were able to accomodate all of us - which made it more special and fun for us. I cannot say enough good things about the place. From the moment we checked in to the moment we left, we were treated with kindness and professionalism. We loved it! Pros: service, service, service!!!! more

Do Not Waste Your Time 10/28/2006

Dear Reader, don't belive the hype on this site. This spa is tiny, noisy and overpriced for the quality of service. These people do not know how to do nails. I can't speak for the other services D'mai offers, but I can't believe they'd be very relaxing in this environment. I've gone to a lot of places in BK and Manhattan to have my nails done--this was the worst and the most expensive. Save yourself a trip. Pros: sigh... Cons: $$$, sloppy manicures/pedicures more

Was I really In Brooklyn? 10/12/2006

I am an avid spa goer, not only when I vacation but also when I am home, pamper, pamper, pamper is my motto. I hopped on the train and headed to Brooklyn for a visit to d'mai. I must say I was so impressed. After changing into my rode, I was seated in a waiting area all by myself that was so peaceful and calming. I received a 90 minute massage that was one of the best I have ever gotten. After my massage I sat in the sauna for a few mintues then took a long wonderful shower using all types of delicious products. d'mai is not just "another place" they really have a special touch. I will be a frequent guest. Pros: professional, warm & friendly, environment more

Heavenly 9/4/2006

I am currently expecting my first child, needless to say I have been experiencing a lot of discomfort. I began my quest to find a place to get a massage. I soon found out there are many places in the neigborhood that offer massages, however d'mai is truly the only full service spa. I was greeted by a warm friendly staff, where after answering a few questions escorted me to the changing room. I soon found myself in a robe I could live in, sitting in a bamboo chair surrounded by flowers and plants and the calming sounds of water. I received a prenatal massage from Nichole, which was absolutely perfect. She was able to answer all of my questions (and I was full of them) and she was able to show me some safe stretches to assist me with my lower back pain. I have not felt this good in a few months. I am looking forward to another visit. Pros: skilled, friendly, calming space more

SWEET!!! 8/24/2006

I booked services here for both myself and my girlfriend, we received a massage together in the cabana. I felt like a superhero, my girlfriend was so excited! Our massages were right on point, I could not of asked for a better serivce. Afterwards we relaxed together in the sauna and she asked me if I placed the rose petals on her massage table, she thought that was so sweet and romantic. Thanks for making our day special, you have a great place. We will be back. Pros: ambience, staff, easy to get to Cons: none more

Shout Out to D'mai 8/9/2006

I moved back to Park Slope after years of living on the West Coast. I was so thrilled to know that a full service spa opened up in the neighborhood. I received my first massage/facial there today and they were both wonderful. The space was more than I expected, it is beautifully decorated and quite spacious. The front desk staff greeted me with a smile (which in some spas is rare), both of my therapists were professional and made sure my concerns were addressed. And one of the best perks, I was able to walk home afterwards! No cab ride = no hassles! I wish you all the best! Pros: staff, easy to get to, clean Cons: none more

very pushy 8/8/2006

After reading all the rave reviews, I was expecting heaven. The staff was very pleasant but the space was small. All the rooms were small, from the reception to the changing room to the service rooms. The service rooms were not very serene, I was trying to relax during my facial and I kept hearing conversations from the hallway. The most annoying was that the facialist kept pushing products and services. She would not relent and wouldnt continue until i agreed to the peel that she said i had to have. Then, she kept on pushing additional products...lotions, serums, etc. Overall, very disappointed. Pros: ideal location in Park Slope, friendly staff Cons: push additional services/products more

  • The Scene
To decorate her spa, Daniella Stromberg brought back woven floor mats, chairs and a chaise lounge from her trips to Indonesia. Then she and co-owner Mark Abbonizio took the Pacific Island concept even further: A pristine boardwalk runs the length of the richly colored, 3,000-square-foot interior. Asian-influenced flower arrangements decorate each of the cozy waiting areas which separate the treatment rooms.

    The Services
Like the space itself, D'mai's approach is expansive. Facials rebalance, restore vitality and fight aging using the high-end Sonya Dakar products; in addition to cleansing, extractions and the like, they all include massage on the face, neck, shoulder, hands and feet. Waxing (using skin- and hair-type appropriate waxes) extends from brow shaping to hair removal on toes, and neglects nothing in between (Brazilian included). Available in seven modalities, therapeutic massages are done with herb-infused oils.

    The Details
Massage, body treatments, facials, manicure/pedicure, hair removal.
