Another Great Zeek's 5/12/2006

I wrote about the Phinney Ridge Zeek's but the Denny Way Zeek's is also good. It tends to be more of a lunch crowd than a dinner crowd. It's close to Seattle Center, has great pizza, and really nice wait staff. more

Best PIzza in Town 11/30/2005

As a native of Chicago, I have come to be highly dependent on high quality pizza. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered Zeek's. It has a fun atmosphere in a great location, right next door to the Seattle Center. But most important, the pizza is delicious. They serve up unique combinations of ingredients (try the "Thai one on") , on a solid foundation of a great crust and perfectly placed seasonings. We have now had their Tuesday special 4 weeks in a row! more

Confessions of an East Coast Pizza Snob Part I 9/20/2005

There are very few things in this world that make me as happy as pizza. I wish I could say that only applies to good pizza, but it doesn't. It applies to pizza-- thick, thin, fresh, frozen-- I love pizza. Perhaps it's the way I was raised with Friday night being pizza night, or maybe it's just the combination of flavors which no matter how well made or crappily constructed will bring some semblance of joy to my life. This is not a reflection on my life (at least not in the way you're thinking) it is a reflection of the only food craved by five year olds, thirteen year olds, drunken college students, tired working adults, and retired grandparents. Having said that, I have an east coast pizza bias and my greatest pizza memories (more than I'd like to admit) all have come from the east. Since visiting and moving to the west coast, I have been wary, hopeful, but ultimately let down by the west coast pizza experience. There is just something about it, no matter how, "New York Style" they claim it to be (a common misconception being that "New York Style" is the only enjoyable east coast pizza) the pizza just never matches up. Some say it's the water, but that sounds like a lazy argument. Others say it's the weather, and while I don't know the dynamics of a brick oven or a steel pizza oven, I do know that 450 degrees on the east coast is 450 degrees on the west coast (unless of course it's a leap year). Then one day, during Bumbershoot, just a short walk from Seattle Center, I ran into ZEEK'S PIZZA. At first I was skeptical, but when the pizza arrived and I took my first bite of the semi-thick, crispy crusted slice, a grin spread across my sauce cheeked face and I knew I had found a new home. ZEEK'S PIZZA is in a great location by Seattle Center, has a friendly, personable waiting staff, apparently a great pizza chef, and while their menu contains other items, pizza is the way to go, especially with the decent prices and interesting beer list. And if you see a guy sitting back in his chair, with an unusual smile on his face, and a far off glow in his eyes, come over and say hi. more

good pizza 8/18/2005

this is good, but not anything special. they have your average pizza, and they are nice and vey family-friendly. when i say average pizza, i do not mean that they are bad in any way. it's just that they aren't anything extraordinary, somewhere you should defianetly visit.the pizza place that they bought, the one that used to stand there, called guitos', was REALLY good, and the only reason I resent zeeks is because they caused guitos no longer to be. more

Kid friendly-pizza, don't stoop to Chuck-E-Cheese 6/5/2005

Zeek's pizza (several locations, my favorite is the one on Denny Way near Seattle Center) is good, family-friendly pizza in a comfortable atmosphere. The atmosphere is exposed brick walls, big booths, Bob Marley playing on the CD player. This place makes one feel at home. While they are known largely for their more avant-garde pizzas, such as the Thai One On (thai style, you even order it 1-5 stars spicy) and the Treehugger (too many vegetables to remember) their more conservative pizzas are excellent too. The last time I went, I had the "John Candy (Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni, and Italian Sausage) and it was excellent. You know how the italian sausage served on some pizzas are gray flavorless globs that look like rabbit droppings? The italian sausage here isn't like that at all. The service is extremely inconsistent, the first time I went to Zeek's (the one in Ravenna), I milled about for 15 minutes hoping someone would notice me. The last time I went, we were seated immediately, my child was brought crayons, coloring pages, and some pizza dough to play with (a very nice touch). I ordered the kemper root beer and they served it in a frosty glass with no ice (another nice touch). The one on Denny Way is walking distance from the Space Needle, and a much better place to take your out-of-town guests than the dismal pizza joint in the Center House. more
