horrible service. no friend of mine. 3/14/2011

i have been eating at friend house since i moved to the city 4 years ago. after my experience there tonight, i will never order delivery or order take out ever again. they constantly screw up my order. when it's delivered, it's never right and they don't care when i call to let them know. when i order in the restaurant, i stick around and open my bag to check the order because i know it's incorrect. but sticking around to make sure i leave with what i ordered isn't what bugs me. spending $15 for a salmon avocado roll and seaweed salad (way too much money) isn't what aggravates me. what i disklike about this restaurant and what has driven me to this point of vowing not to go back is that they don't care about service. you'd think that after showing up at least once a week in my gym clothes to order the same dinner for the last year would mean that they'd finally get the order right. no way. and when you call them out, they don't care. they are no friend of mine unless i want some greasy pad thai and i'm eating in the restaurant. don't waste your time dining in or ordering to go. more

Good eats 3/12/2010

Been ordering from this place for a few years. Food is always great and the delivery is quick. I have not been to their new location on the corner of 3rd Ave and 13th St but looks nice from the outside. Pros: Great Pad Thai more

I loved this place! 1/24/2010

I totally enjoyed the food and service at Friend House, the server was very friendly and the duck soup was perfect, full of meat, vegetables and flavor.\r The server kept us comfortable and brought over tea several times plus free edamame.I will certainly visit next time I go back to NYC.Thanks,\r Patricia14. Pros: Best duck soup in town. Cons: A bit dark. more

Good Food, annoying furniture 11/16/2008

food's good, nothing amazing or memorable. I came here for the first time on a double date with friends on a friday night. I was really looking to sit down and savor my food after a long week. I'm vegetarian and felt the options were hard to find and when I asked the server about 2 of the dishes, he couldn't even tell me what was in the dish. He seemed aggravated and another server who asked about drinks was very short with us. Pros: food Cons: service, uncomfortable seats more

HORRIFIC service, repulsive food 8/26/2008

ok, so i've been going here for the last 6 months and consistently the food quality has dropped - as consistent as the woman who answer the phone becomes more and more rude.\r \r tonight was the last straw. i ordered broccoli in garlic sauce and found not only one, but three hairs in the broccoli. i rang up and told her what had happened and she said, ""there was no hair in your food"". i was livid. how could she know? anyway, after getting hung up on every single time i called, i had to block my caller id so i could speak to a manager, who i never got to because she suspected it was me and disconnected the call.\r \r this place needs to be shut down and she needs to be fired for her horrific behavior and terrible attitude. Pros: cheap Cons: everything, especially service and food quality more

Decent pan-Asian. Nice decor, good service,... 4/19/2008

Decent pan-Asian. Nice decor, good service, pleasant all around, but food doesn't really stand out. more

disgusting 11/15/2007

I have eaten food from this restaurant many times. Usually it is acceptable, if a bit sweet. It usually seems at least to be clean Chinese food, and slightly less oily than your average Chinese take-out restaurant. However, this evening I called and order MuShu Pork, and when it came it was absolutely disgusting. The pork pieces were extremely fatty, and there were two or three pieces that were massive, like 2 inches by 3 inches, oddly discolored. I stopped eating the food and suddenly felt a bit sick to my stomach. \r \r After calling the restaurant to alert them to what I had experienced they acted like it was nothing, and offered a five dollar credit. I asked, is that how much Mu Shu Pork costs? The woman put me on hold with a very rude tone, and then came back and very matter of factly said, ok we will credit you the full amount. And then promptly hung up on me. \r \r ""Friend"" house??? Pros: quite varied menu Cons: low standards, rude service more

Fabulous Food! I just moved to NY and this is the best Chinese/Asian I have found yet....and I am very picky with this kind of food. I ordered the General Tso's chicken (Sweet, Spicy, crunchy....exactly right) and loved it so much I went two nights in a row AND am sitting here writing a review. I have never written a restaurant review. The atmosphere is nice....kind of a mod Asian decor and small intimate tables. The only part of the experience I have had problems with both times is the staff. I felt rushed near the end of both meals with the check being brought to me before I was even finished eating. I find that a big turn off. I like to sit and enjoy my meal and glass of wine. Other than that, it is my favorite restaurant in NYC right now=-) Pros: FABULOUS FOOD! DELICIOUS Cons: strange service more

cheap asian fare... 3/6/2007

better than takeout, nothing special, but cheap and yummy for what it is. the service is always fine, the food is standard asian food... the chinese food is definitely better than the sushi, and the drinks are good. more

Bizarre 7/13/2006

I've probably been to this place at least 20x, and will continue to go b/c the food is great and cheap. But I have to say I have had some strange experiences with the staff there. Just last night I ordered a wonton soup and asked them for some cruncy noodles for it. The waitress told me they didn't have any, when I said I receive them with my delivery orders she said they're just for delivery and REFUSED to give me a bag. I even spoke with the manager and she confirmed they would do not serve them in the resturant b/c they ""don't look nice."" I was quite insistant and she also refused to give me any. If this was the only example I wouldn't bother to write a review, but there's been other times when they refused to give me sliced avocado even though I said I would pay whatever they wanted to charge me, have insisted one of their mixed drinks was what was listed on the menu although it clearly was not (how does something have coke in it when it's clear?), and opened the door to the back area during the winter freezing us out at least 10X after we asked them to please stop and they kept saying OK. I hope management decides to become more reasonable to customer's requests b/c the food really can't be beat. more

solid food & service 4/21/2006

ive been here a couple times and have always been pleased. service is attentive and efficient. the chinese food is solid and portions are large. the friend house chef rolls are a lot of fun as they come with different sauces (like fruity wasabi) and toppings (assortments of raw & cooked seafood). try the friend house special roll or the fantasy roll ($12). i had the mango beef (tender meat in a slightly spicy mango sauce, $12) & the baby cabbage with shitake mushrooms ($10) tonight. both were very satisfying. its a good place to go with groups (they take reservations). drink menu is extensive and cheap ($6/cocktail). the lychee sake cocktail was strong but tasty. dessert menu is limited they torch the fried ice cream ($6) in front of you, which is a nice touch. our bill came out to $22pp including alcohol. will definitely come again. Pros: good service, inexpensive, chef rolls Cons: seating in back cold, can be oily, stool seating more

Incredible Sushi Rolls 8/18/2005

I went down there the other day with my friends. We tried friend house roll. It was wonderful, especial the curry sauce. We also tried the twin spicy roll. It was so great if you like spicy. The most special things are their sauce and the combination of fruits in their rolls. The other things I like that are the new sake lounge and out door garden. It is cool. I will recommend Pros: Roll, Garden, Drink Cons: Paking, Plate, Music more

Our Favorite Local Sushi... 1/5/2004

Great lunch specials, and the friendliest customer service. If you do visit, watch out for your fingers when pulling your chair in...the chairs are a precise fit to the tables. On the warmer days, sit in the back garden. And their Grand Marnier Prawns are a luxury! more

Friend House Roll Rocks! 9/29/2003

Friend House has consistently good sushi and appetizers, but the standout is the Friend House Roll. Only once have I gone there and not had it, and I was sorry. Never again! They have a ""sunset special"" if you get there before 7:00, which is nice. The service and decor are just fine, nothing out of the ordinary there. more

who is that guy on the phone? 6/1/2003

my coworker and i always give in to this place for lunch delivery. they have great prompt service and always friendly. the guy that takes our order is so sweet that we almost want to meet him and tell him to his face how great the food is. the chicken skewers are amazing as well as almost all of the lunch specials. and the sushi is fresh and they give you a good bit for delivery. order from here once and you will be hooked. more
