"From 1900 until now, ""Young's"" has meant furnishings for the home, plus some other merchandise for industry and business. In the early days, that meant clothes boilers and hardware. Building material, outboard motors, oil stoves and toys were standard hardware items in the years the business was a hardware store in downtown Alpena.
Citizenry of Alpena bought nuts and bolts, ice skates and fishing tackle from the original store, facing Second Avenue in downtown Alpena. The original store was located between the old Montgomery Wards store (Center Building) downtown, and a corner drugstore at the corner of Second and Chisholm.
Eventually the store moved to 107 W. Chisholm Street, where Joe Young, then Jay Young operated the business under the name ""Huron Hardware"" for many years. The location on Chisholm Street was one that many current residents might remember.
