BEST BRUNCH EVER! 5/5/2009

I went here about a year ago...wandering in the village with my honey, and stopped at a sign saying 2 free drinks & pri fixe brunch so I turned left and found the most adorable little tapas bar. Now I hope they still have brunch, because it was SO PLEASANT! It was just about noon and no one was there..so nice, my honey had the huevos rancheros and loved the mole! And I had a salmon goat cheese sandwich thing, only it was on this amazing bread!! Amazing, coffee, dessert- oh they were new so they brought out like a fondue strawberries and melting chocolate thing. Have been meaning to go back, but we live uptown...will have to as soon as it gets nice!! Hope they kept up with the brunch! Pros: GREAT AMBIANCE, small, cozy toasty Cons: size more

No thanks. 11/18/2008

This place was recommended by a co-worker and I will never listen to his advice again. The service was rude, everyone seem to have an attitude and when the food finally arrived it was terrible. Pros: near other restaurants Cons: bad food. more

great tapas and wine 10/17/2008

I love this tapas and wine bar because the atmosphere is conversational, energetic with music, but easy going and quaint at the same time. There is a wide selection of wines, and the people that own and work at the bar know exactly what to recommend. I am a huge fan of both of the chorizo dishes...but you should try one of everything, if you have enough room in your stomach! Great people, beautifully made interior, I highly recommend for a nice light easy place to enjoy a chat and some wine! more

A spot to sit, sip and contemplate the things of bliss 10/15/2008

I have not lived in NYC for five years but I still consider this my local nightcap. Any day that I pass by I am guaranteed to see a good friend and meet someone new. I will eat the Chorizo and the Mushroom dish which is always delicious and I often ask the mind behind the bar for a hint of what is good for the day. Pros: great food, great drinks and a wonderful atmosphere Cons: it is hard to find behind the construction wall, But just look for the flashing red sign! more

The service was amazing. Really. Our staff made great recommendations, knew a ton about wine and was happy to chat with us. That person was attentive without being obtrusive and made for a delightful experience. Pros: wine list ,friendly staff more

Great little find. Good Food. Nice Service. 9/17/2008

Love wine and tapas and really enjoyed this place. There is a great wine list, great sangria and a very nice selection of tapas. We tried from the bruschetta, the goat cheese fritters and a bunch of other things all delicious!!!! The place is a bit small but perfect for nights when you don't want to deal with the hustle and bustle of a large place. I think it would be great for a date because of the intimate feel. Will be back when I'm downtown. Pros: Great Food. Nice Wine List. Great Sangria. Friendly Service! Cons: A bit small but sometimes that's good! more

don't waste your time and money 8/1/2008

We walk into this place and got the worst service and the worst meal ever. The owner was seating at the bar drunk, harrasing every woman who walked near him. There are plenty of other wine bars in this neighborhood , don't waste your money here. Cons: drunk owner more

Good spot to slip away for wine and small bites. 7/13/2007

While this spot is very small, the service is warm and the wine quite good. I enjoyed their salads and other tastings. Pros: Good Spanish wines more

Great food and wonderful service 2/5/2007

We made a reservation here for 8 people Saturday night and the staff in this tiny place couldn't have been more gracious and helpful. My party trickled in and there wasn't any attitude. We had a great meal and the sangria was terrific. I would definitely come back here. Probably better for a date as it's a small restaurant but they were very accommodating to my larger group. Pros: Great service, good prices, yummy food Cons: Small menu more

Fun little dinner spot... 10/23/2006

I surprised my boyfriend and took him to the city for his birthday. We both love sharing plates, so I thought tapas would be fun. The option for a trio of wines was unique and much enjoyed. The meat and cheese plate we shared was delicious. I think one of the more unique things about Xicala is the atmosphere. It's relatiavely small and can be casual, or a little more upscale. The bar area is dimly lit and lends itself to close, quiet conversation. My only complaint is that I wish the menu had more options. What we did have was good though! Pros: Atmosphere, drink options Cons: Plate options more

Easy, relaxed place to bring a date... 8/31/2006

Great wines, not pretentious. Good music, sort of latin with an odd but strangely loungey feel. Very mellow. I was there on a Wed and they had a Cuban band for a couple of hours, there was dancing - all in a very small space but it was really a lot of fun. Afterwards, it went right back to this relaxed vibe. Very south american, sort of sultry. more

OK 7/6/2006

Xicala was nice and cute, with a great wine list. It wasnt very crowded which was refreshing. However the service was up and down. Server's were extremely nice, yet were socializing too much with friends that were having drinks at the bar and it was difficult to get their attention. The food was decent, they have a great cheese plate, but I wish our server knew the cheeses, and had simply asked the kitchen what they were when I inquired. It was a good experience, but I prefer ""N"". Pros: Great Wine list, cute atomosphere Cons: Unknowledgable, distracted wait staff more

nice little spot 4/20/2006

I love the ambience at Xicala - especially when they have live music Wednesday nights. My routine never changes - pitcher of Strawberry Sangria with a couple of close friends, a platter or two of cheese and fruit and an order of olives. Can't go wrong. If anything it makes an otherwise horrible day right. Pros: ambience, nice staff, not crowded more

great spot 1/10/2006

definitely a nice place to chill. don't be in a rush if you want to try this place! reasonable prices. GREAT atmosphere. nice out of the way little spot. Pros: wine, food, atmosphere Cons: service a tad slow more

Hidden Gem 11/9/2004

Perfect for a date of any type! The place is tiny but extremely warm and friendly. The bartender was accomodating and helpful. We ordered the tasting tray and everything we tasted was absolutely delicious. The wine choices are fabulous and the sangria is incredibly tasty! Pros: food, wine, atmospher more

Great Tapas 10/31/2004

This may be the smallest restruant I have ever been in but they make up for it with great tapa's and wines. You can't fit 20 people in here so it is deffinately cozy. The staff are friendly and the service is good. This place is worth visiting. Pros: cozy, food, wine more

Delectable 11/7/2003

Xicala is a great little romantic Spanish hideaway thats surrounded by a young hip neighborhood. The music is romantic as is the atmosphere. I loved the array of wine and was very pleased with the service. Try the chorizo con papas! Pros: Romantic Atmosphere, Wine Selection, Tapas more

Great Little Wine Bar 5/29/2003

This is a great little wine bar. It has good music, nice tapas, an interesting selection of wines (primarily Spanish) and a lowkey hip neighborhood clientele. Most importantly, it is reasonably priced. This is definitely a hidden gem, which will not stay undiscovered for long. Pros: Good Music, Good Wines, Reasonably Priced Cons: Small Locale more
