Never again 12/19/2009

What an awful place. Toward the end of our night there, we cashed out our tab but left the tip off the card since we were going to get cash from the rest of our group, which we told the bartender. The bartender (who apparently didn’t think we’d actually tip her), another woman and 2 bouncers were so angry that they started yelling at us and kicked us out. They were extremely rude and obnoxious and made a huge scene. I’ve never been treated that way at a professional place of business – if you can even call it that. It was insulting. We’ll never go back. more

Awesome neighborhood bar! 7/4/2008

Went there last night with a bunch of friends. It was rainy outside, dark inside. Perfectly seedy! The ladies behind the bar were so nice and cheerful. It's a comfortable, family like environment- adorable kids running in and out of the kitchen, and yes, I did see a 6' guy w/ an eye patch. The karaoke selection is fairly limited, some of the tracks are worn, but it just wouldn't seem right if it were anything better. This is the place for you if you want to feel you're going to a friend's house to hang out, drink, eat (they brought us simple hotdogs gratis and shared one of the employee's birthday cake with everyone in the bar), and sing silly songs. "Hawaiian Pnch" was great; it has like, 9 liquors in it! Pros: Family like environment, nice, thoughtful people, easy going place, good drinks. Cons: Not for anyone looking for a trendy, hot spot. more

chill 2/3/2008

This is not your typical bar. Family owned joint that's just keeping it old school. specialty mixed drink- HawaiinPunch is the best alcoholic drink I've ever had. Lots of regulars go to this neighbor dive, but welcome newbies. if you want a mix drink to be perfected, ask for Ma. Good place for a quick drink and entertainment (watching ppl make a fool out of 'em selves on the mic!) Service is average and the songs could always be better. more

Smells like cat pee(e) 12/18/2007

Boy were we drunk (by the time we got here). To think that I can still remember the stench speaks for itself, though the thundering close-out-the-bar rendition of love shack was fun to watch. more

fun time 8/12/2007

cheesy but fun; part of a lowkey casual nyc evening - no need to dress up! more here: qritiq.wordpressdotcom under Winnie's more

Why? 2/4/2007

My review: Pros: Can't think of any.... Cons: Sound system- I've seen better stereo systems being push around a shopping cart on the Lower East Side. Atmosphere- Good chance of picking up Herpes in the bathroom or maybe even E-Coli from the tabletops. Female aspect: - Good luck catching a cab outside this place around 4am. So if you have to walk around that area of NYC with yourself an 2 girlfriends I would say your chance of harm coming your way greatly increase...... - Drinks cheap? ... Questionable. If a beer is 4$ there and 5$ at another dive bar with less convicts and trash then I guess whose really getting the bargain. Answer= The Convicts.... - Imagine if something did happen to you at a bar would "Winnies" be the place you family would imagine you hanging out. They may even wonder what you were doing there..... - Maybe if you do hang out at this place you should borrow your boyfreind's pocket knife( who you apparently met at Winnies) just in case something happens. You can never can be to prepared for this place. Pros: NONE Cons: YOU NAME IT more

Chinatown Bar 11/1/2005

one of the few chinatown bars. nice dive meeting place to go to before eating in chinatown. more

Wack Reviews - Winnie's Rocks 9/10/2005

I wasn't planning on writing a review, but after I saw how people were bashing this place I had to. Yes it's a dive bar, and? So? The karaoke machine has thousands of songs including hundreds of recent ones (there's a second list in the back of the book). There's a stage and two mics for duets and it doesn't take much coaxing to find someone to to a duet with you if you're shy. This place had a great neighborhood feel and by the time you leave you know everyone there. I didn't get a bad vibe from any of the staff, infact I thought the fact that it was family opperated business was very cute and welcoming. Was there for a b-day party and thought it was great. Pros: Relaxed, Many songs, Friendly crowd more

layback and great drinks 4/17/2005

the bartenders might look like local bakery ladies but they are far more knowledgeable in variety of drinks more than the snotty bartenders in other trendy clubs and lounges.. The atmoshpere is definitely thumbs down but it is soo layback you can really relax with no one to impress. Prices are reasonable given that it is in the middle of chinatown with no service to offer wutsoever. Pros: inexpensive, layback Cons: decor more

ID 3/10/2005

How are they with checking ID's? Are they real strict ??? more

okay so this place has no decor.. 4/26/2003

No decor kinda yucky in fact but this is a dive bar that serves pretty good drunken food.. they dont have a menu but you can ask your waitress about it. Fried fish balls, chow mei fun, dumplings, chicken wings all pretty good after a night of crazy karaoking with yer friends. more

ehhh 3/23/2003

the bar is Aiite.... good to go with a bunch of friends... but dont try to get into fights.... the central booking just around the corner... cops tend to be outside..... not exactly up to date songs... alot of 30-40 white males and females hit it up on friday and saturday nights meaning ALOT of bad Singing... more

AVOID 1/15/2003

Avoid Winnie's at all costs. There's a certain charm to smelly ratholes with watered down drinks and clammy cold service, but this place just doesn't have it. The karaoke system is pathetic, with a cliche songlist, a rotten sound system and monitors at the back of the stage, so unless you know the lyrics by heart, you got to perform with your bum to the audience. The place does get packed for some reason, but that only makes it stinkier not more fun. Pros: none Cons: dirty, smelly, bad drinks more

what a disappointment 12/18/2002

I'm a fan of dives, but this place is just not fun. It's dirty, the sound system is shabby, the song are listed by title only (no artist name, so it can be a bit of a crapshoot) and drinks are too expensive for such a rundown place. The service isn't too hot, the people running it had an attitude when I was there, and the crowd looked like a Tommy Hillfiger ad. You're better off at Planet Rose on Avenue A. more

yeah, divey bars are in, but this place takes it to the extreme. what a dump. lousy atmosphere, lousy drinks, lousy song selections. better places to go to Pros: none more

Not an average bar 8/27/2002

For a good time with your friends, this is the place to be. It's loud, the drinks are strong and the service is great. I have to agree with getting new songs, but it takes you back to your youngers years. You can definitely un-wind without anyone caring. Pros: inexpensive, great bartenders Cons: crowded, dirty more

  • The Scene
The waiters and the owner at this seedy little bar are unconscionably rude, and the female hostesses can't make a drink to save their lives--something about their foxy attire makes you think they weren't hired for their skills behind the bar--but everyone, from police officers to white-collar Wall Street boys, flocks to Winnie's.

    The Draw
OK, so you have to pay. But from "Hotel California" to "Love Me Tender," they've got all your favorites on the machine, and the hostesses love to sing duets with the occasional "special" customer--who could be anyone from a little person to an eye patch-sporting six-footer.
