DO NO BOARD HERE 10/27/2009

After keeping my horse at a friends farm for years where he was lovingly cared for, I decided to move him for the winter to Windy Ridge so I'd have use of the indoor. \r \r Owner seemed very knowledgeable, and although the barn could have been tidier, cobwebbed, weeds removed, etc. ... the footing in the indoor was nice, the location convenient, and the horses there looked good. Since care was my number ONE concern I chose this barn.\r \r But, by the 5th day there MY horse was lethargic and not feeling well ... (I ride fairly hard 3-4 days per week - by the 5th day there he couldn't get through his work out, he basically ran out of steam) and when I put him away there was ONE CUP of food in his feeder ... I realized his calorie intake had been reduced by nearly 75%!\r \r I addressed the owner, let her know my horses symptoms and told her my 16.2 hand, 1000# training level dressage horse HAD to have more calories for energy - and that she must have misunderstood when I told her my horse was an easy keeper.\r \r She said these were ""concentrated"" pellets, she's been doing this for 30 yrs, and that's all the food he needed and that's all she would give him (she'd never been out to see him ""go"" ... he's a big, and big moving horse, we have serious work-outs, he's an easy keeper YES, but not that easy!). I agreed with her that some horses absolutely do FINE with lots of grass hay (she feeds ONLY grass hay) and a lower amount of food ... BUT not ONE cup 2x per day for a horse my horse's size and level of work (no matter HOW concentrated, working animals (& people) need CALORIES). \r \r Trying to compromise ... I offered to buy Purina Strategy (what he's flourished on for years - I had thought that's what SHE fed actually) and bring that in to give him, she told me NO, he was getting 1 cup of her ""concentrated"" ration AM and PM, that's all she believed he needed -the discussion was over - if I didn't like her food regiment maybe I should find another place to board, and that ""some people you can't please"".\r \r Sadly, just 8 days into my horse being fed 75% LESS than what he needed (already one WHOLE hole up on my girth - and he was SO SO NOT himself) .. I realized I was fighting a loosing battle with (what I learned the hard way) an irrational person that clearly no interest in hearing anything I had to say - it was her way or the highway. \r \r I told her I'd be out by the end of the month (I'd PAID through the end of the month which was just a week away ... (I'd come in the middle of the month). The NEXT day all the other horses were turned out and my horse was left IN, and he was borderline hysterical by the end of the day alone in the barn and without water by 5:30. Owner would not take my calls ... and avoided the barn when I was there. \r \r When I picked him up to leave the day after (couldn't wait until the end of the month - very worried about my horses well being) I finally DID catch her at the barn ... and when confronted said YES, she left him IN for most of the day alone in the barn, (supposedly he'd got out for a couple hours in the morning alone?). Her reasoning was because since I was leaving there was NO NEED to continue incorporating him into the herd. His stall was a urine packed MESS, and there was no water in his stall. \r \r My experience was horrifying ... DO NOT TAKE YOUR HORSE HERE. \r Oct 2009 Pros: good location Cons: BAD Care more
