Editorial review from Citysearch 10/18/2013

Yesterday around 6:30pm I was waiting to cross the street at Milwaukee/North/Damen. I heard someone yelling and saw the driver of a ""Wells Automotive Services"" tow truck screaming and swearing at a group of cyclists waiting in front of him at the RED light. He wanted them to move so he could turn right while the light was red, at an intersection with a ""NO TURN ON RED"" sign, AND pedestrians crossing. He was telling the bikers to get on the sidewalk (illegal in Chicago if you are over 12), and even opened his door and stepped out of his vehicle to confront the cyclist that told him so. Luckily, the light turned green right at that moment and he got back into his truck to get going (after calling a female cyclist there a ""b****""), but who knows what he would've done had there been more time. \r \r There is no way I would EVER use a company that employs such aggressive and unsafe drivers. If ""automotive"" is in your company name, you need to know and abide by BASIC rules of the road. AVOID AVOID AVOID. more

If you are a women don't call Wells. Their tow truck drivers talk down to women. The driver Doug decided to lecture me after he was 40 minutes that I had an attitude and he could just leave if I didn't change it. I'm guessing customer service is not to high up on their list of traits they look for in their employees. Luckily there are numerous tow truck companies out there that know how to interact with a women. Needless to say I will never use Wells again. more

Towee Beware! 6/5/2012

I called to order a tow, then called back 10min later to inquire about possible cancellation due to a status change. I got the manager who told me it would be a $45 cancellation charge, as per their policy, and then we were cutoff before I could respond. When I called back he told me he had subsequently rerouted the tow truck. I asked him if he could still come and he told me "I reserve the right to refuse service and I'm doing so to you" which left me quite shocked. Despite repeated requests for him to still come and help me out he refused.\r Bottom line was that I was left without a tow, with a $45 charge, and insults.\r If you do business with these guys you might consider bringing your lawyer. more

BAD ACTORS!!!! 6/4/2012

BAD ACTORS!!!! Pros: null Cons: null more

Buyer Beware 7/10/2011

Bottom line -- do not trust them. They were dispatched by my roadside assistance provider to tow me and made me agree to have the work done by them before they would tow and store my car. more

Expensive 5/19/2011

$75/day to keep your car here if they aren't given the go ahead to fix it. if you want to take to another place, you better pay the balance of towing + inspection fee. prices to fix are crazy high. i called around and had quotes about $200 cheaper and the quotes were free. their's cost $60 but they don't tell you that. frank is a nice guy who will talk your ear off to make you like him, then they'll drop the hammer with their estimate. go elsewhere. more

wells automotive will BREAK YOUR CAR!!! 1/4/2011

I originally called for roadside assistance changing a tire. The guy they sent out put a hydraulic jack under my car and when he lifted it, I heard a pop. Now my brakes grind and there's a thump when i turn the wheel. more

Great Service- Very Honest 12/6/2010

I read what others had to say about this place and think you all must be nuts. I have a BMW 745 that is out of warranty. I took my car to this place because the BMW dealerships kept raping me. Frank, the owner of this place fixed my car for pennies on the dollar. He also told me that things the BMW dealership told me needed fixing didn't. I also learned that this guy is a Master Scout with the Boy Scouts and provides food, shelter and furniture for the poor. I will NEVER go to a BMW dealership again. Frank is honest and this place knows what they are doing more

Saved me $$$! 10/26/2010

I brought my car in because the check engine light was on and the car was running like crap. Frank told me that he would check the car out and let me know what is wrong. I was expecting to receive a call with a big estimate and boy was I shocked when he called me back. Frank informed me that my car had a broken vacuum line that was causing my problem. The car was fixed and was ready for pick up all for $60.00! The car is running like new again. Thanks guys and see you in cheeseland! more

I have never experience such horrible customer service in my life nor have I had someone who is supposed to be of a 'professional caliber' speak to me in such an unprofessional manner. Pros: STAY AWAY FROM WELLS Cons: Deceptive, terrible customer service more

Chi-sters 12/27/2009

I went to this place knowing I needed a simple tune-up. When pulling into the place, the vibe of the employees were laxed. The diagnosis they gave me was fabricated as they didn't know that I took my car into 2 other places to find out what the code was to the service engine alert. After giving me a bogus diagnosis, they then tried to convince me to pay almost $400 for a tune-up. Cons: Overpriced Hustlers more

Worst Customer Service Possible 8/30/2009

ON Saturday August 29 I had a flat tire. Called Allstate who made arrangements at 2:45 pm for a flatbed tow from Wells Automotive. They said and hour and a After calling back personally at 3:45 and being told 4 pm and then calling back personally aat 4:15 and being hung up on called Allstate back. Spoke with Allstate three more time between 4:30 and 5:45 before even they acknowledged that Wells was no doubt not going to show. Every time they called Wells would give an ETA of another half hour. . They had been told the dealer, who was nearby was closing at 5 and they said we had plenty of time. Which we did until they didn't show. Allstate cancelled but they had no one else to call. I Called C&D towing. They said hour and a half were there in hour and 45 mins. Bad traffic on Saturday. Had proper truck, were professional and sympathetic. Wells has terrible reviews all over the place, but if you are sitting in your car with a flat tire and they are contracted with Allstate you assume reliablity becuz you surely cannot check. Write this name down and whatever motor club you belong to don't let them try and send you Wells. Cons: Unreliable, dishonest more

Many thanks to Wells 8/28/2009

My son was stuck in Chicago. His car wouldn't start. Wells towed him, checked car out and couldn't find anything wrong. They couldve have taken us for alot of money. They were helpful and kind. Picked my son up at the hotel so he could retrieve his car..They didn't have to do that. Pros: VEARY HELPFUL Cons: NONE more

Upselling to the tune of $686!!!! 6/18/2009

I drive a 2001 Subaru Outback that has been meticulously maintained. In Chicago on business I was due for my 3k mile oil change. I went in and told the mechanic that I needed the oil changed and THAT WAS IT. Pros: Close by Cons: Upselling more

Run....Run... Run...BAD SERVICE 6/15/2009

Bad customer service...quoted one price and once the service was completed the price doubled. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO THE COMPANY. They are a rip-off. more

overcharging 6/4/2009

I was quoted $75 for the tow plus a flat rate per mile - distance was six miles. Did not get a receipt and when the charge came through it was $225!!!!!! more

Horrible customer service. 1/15/2009

I got a flat tire hitting one of the many potholes in the Westloop. I called GEICO for roadside assistance. They sent someone from Wells Automotive to change my tire and replace it with my spare. When the guy showed up he "tried" to take my tire off. He said it was "stuck." He tried for maybe 2 seconds. He called a tow truck and I waited 3 HOURS for them to arrive. ( they said it would be less than 1 hour) They towed me to a tire place which had no problem replacing my tire. I'm assuming Wells makes more money off GEICO from towing than replacing a tire. I even asked the tire company if there was any reason why roadside "assistance" couldn't take tire off. They all laughed. I called Mike at Wells thinking that he as the owner/manager would want to know what his employees were doing. He didn't care. I will never use this company again. Pros: geico paid for them Cons: unhelpful, unprofessional, shady, untrustworthy more

Worst service ever! 12/8/2008

I didn't choose to use this company, Volkswagen Roadside Assistance did. I called at night to have my car towed and I was told that it would either be a 6 hour wait, or that I could schedule the car to be towed the next morning. At 8:00 in the morning, I was called and told it would be there within the hour. Waited in the car from 8:45-10:15, they never showed up. Called Wells directly and the the lady that answered the phone sounded like she was asleep. She took 10 seconds, supposedly checked with the driver, though I doubt it, and then told me it would be another hour since they were backed up. Apparently they think that since I scheduled a towing, they already had my business and it would be ok to make me wait even longer. Then I looked online, saw the horrible reviews, called VW Roadside Assistance, and demanded to have a different towing company pick it up. At this point, I don't care that I have to wait another couple hours for a different company, just as long as it isn't these retards picking it up. VW says they are investigating this company and they will hopefully never use them again. Thank you citysearch, let's put these a-holes out of business. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

I went here because it was recommened by the Jiffy Lube guys on North and Kingsbury. Well, they must be getting a kick back because the charges are totally over market. Even my the Honda dealer downtown was cheaper!!!! I went in for an anti-freeze leak and came out being told I needed new front brakes, should have my rear brakes services, a leak in an oil gasket (which would need the transmission taken out and flushed) Are you kidding me???? I was given an estimate to repair all the above......$1700!!! I called my father and he said I was being taken for a ride!!!! I called around and was quoted $750 for everything at 2 other shops. I will NEVER return here!!!! AND Im telling the people at Jiffy Lube they are full of it and should find someone else to recommend people to. Cheapest I found was up on Addison and Milwaukee....excellent service and nowhere near $110/hr to have the guys sit around and smoke cigarettes, oh I meant work on your car......NOT Pros: good location to lure people in Cons: TOO EXPENSIVE more
