Cheap Price for an Exam, but expect cheap service too. 7/28/2011

We are all looking for a deal, especially if you are among the vast numbers of uninsured or under insured individuals in this country. Many people who do have health insurance, don't have dental or vision insurance. When you are in that boat, chances are you will look for the best price in town. The Vision Center at Walmart in La Quinta, CA does have that. $89 for a regular eye exam which includes contact lens evaluation. If you have astigmatism the price jumps up to $116. It's still a very fair price. This is what I got for the price though... a less than friendly optometrist who barely speaks to you except for the obligatory ""better or worse"" inquiries and no trial lenses in stock for the toric lenses required for those with astigmatism. This was not a one time occurrence. The very same experience happened to my husband not three weeks before my visit, so I was expecting it to happen to me as well. It seemed like tat was just something you would have to accept in order to get the price.I was told that I would have to wait about a week while trial lenses were ordered. I inquired after about six days because I just happened to be in the store doing my grocery shopping. They weren't in yet. I figured I'd give them until the next Monday which would have been 10 days. I was assured they would call me when they came in. By Wednesday I was starting to wonder so I called. I was told they weren't in yet by the front office staff and that she would confer with the Dr. and call me back. When I asked when to expect the call I was told that it would be the same day. The call never came. I had to call them again the next day. Miraculously they were in. Of course they wanted me to wait another two days to pick them up, so that the doctor would have available time to evaluate the lenses on my eyes. I informed them I would be picking them up the next day regardless. I was told they would ""squeeze"" me in but that I should expect to have to wait for quite a while. Waiting seems to be the status quo at this vision center. This brings me to today. My appointment is tomorrow, and my expectations for quality customer service are not high. I think in the future I will pay a bit more and find another more friendly optometrist who doesn't like to play quite so many waiting games. more
