Best

I love little mom and pop restaurants, and this little gem is in that category of the few still out there in the city. Pros: Great food and service Cons: ---

Worst

Adequate cuisine, but do not consider patronizing it during peak dining hours. The plastic potted plant in the corner will grow fruit before you are seated.

Editorial review from GrubHub 5/13/2013

Disappointing unresponsiveness from manager after delivery staff left off the salads from previous order we placed. Sacrificed our business with the excuse they are already losing money by working with GrubHub, after same manager Tony promised to make it up on a repeat order. If your employee doesn't deliver what you ordered, and you don't oversee their work in your 3rd generation business, then you should step up and cover your employee's mistakes. Do business in the 21st century. When previous order was delivered very late, we called to enquire, and without hearing the reason for the call, the woman who answered spouted they were closing. Have a conversation to make sure you are covering what your patrons ordered, or don't expect repeat business. We tried them several times over the years and find the food very overrated, the service lacking. more

Great place....but 9/18/2009

I have never been treated better in person. Mom made me the best eggplant ever and my date the best broccolli rabe she ever had. Every time has been perfect. But today (18 September 2009) I called, as I do often, to have pizza delivered and they wouldn't honor the online offer of 18"" 3 topping pizza for $16.90 (2 for $29.00) that they advertised on their own website. The guy saud he talked to the owner and it was no good. Please Villa Romano - update your website so it is accurate. I had to call Milano for tonight instead. Pros: Great place to visit in person Cons: Don't honor their website offers more

Discriminating and Rude Owner 1/18/2009

I reserved their banquet room over two months in advance for a very special occasion. After going over the terms of our agreement, he assured me that we would get the banquet room to ourselves given the size of our party and the intimacy we were looking for. The owner assured us that our menu selection would include any dessert on the menu. The morning of our occasion, he had the audacity to call and ask me if I could do him a favor and allow him to put a party of 7 into the banquet room with us because they were ""special"" guest from Italy. I voiced my objections and reminded him that the agreement was for an intimate, private setting for my family and friends, approximately 25-30 people. He insisted by saying, ""so your not willing to help me out here."" I reminded him that it is not the customer that is here to service and provide favors, that we had already agreed to the terms over two months ago, and that attempting to alter that contract the morning off was unprofessional. I could not believe his response when he communicated his disappointment in agreeing to reserve the room for me because I would not accommodate his ""special"" guest and I wasn't going to be spending that much money anyway because I had selected the cheaper of his banquet menu selections. Apparently, he didn't feel we were worthy of this room because we were not ""special"" and as he presumed, were not going to spend money. To his surprise, and definitely not intentionally, we spent right below $1,000 that night, only because it was a very special occasion which merited celebrating over some bottles of wine and Champaign. To top it off, they tried to skip out on the dessert they contracted to and brought out biscotti instead of cheesecake. I forewarn anyone looking into this restaurant to get any arrangements in writing if you dare go in. The food is NOT worth the unprofessional, discriminating, and dishonest character of the owner. more

The best pizza and pasta ever! 11/25/2008

This is the first time I have written a review for Villa Romana. It's the best pizza and pasta ever! My friends took me there for my birthday Sunday, and as usual I was thrilled with the food and the service. one of my friends and I ordered a vegetarian pizza that was cooked perfectly, with all fresh ingredients and the crust was to die for. My other friend ordered the shrimp pasta with pesto sauce and really enjoyed it. She'll be back for more of it, I'm sure! Also, our waiter Nick went above and beyond to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Too bad there aren't more waiters like Nick. He's the best! Pros: Everything about Villa Romana is excellent Cons: Parking is difficult more

Great Experience! 5/18/2008

My husband and I really enjoyed our Wedding Rehearsal Dinner at Villa Romana. Pros: Tony, food, wine, service Cons: parking more

Bad for large groups 3/17/2008

We had a banquet here in their private room recently and paid $15/person. Unfortunately, we were served a mediocre salad, a thin slice of chicken parmesan, and 1/3 of a broken piece of biscotti. No pasta, no bread, and no feeling of being full. Many from our party of 60 headed over to Pluto's and Pasquale's to get a proper meal. more

La Pizza e buona! 9/6/2007

The pizza for my family and I, is the best in the S f Bay area. Pros: owner more

Great Italian family restaurant 9/3/2007

The father and son do a magnificent job running this 52 year old family run italian restaurant. Papa handles the kitchen, and the son manages the front of house. Their intensity and pride is something else to witness. It is something out of a movie. Pros: father and son more

downhill after 30 years 8/23/2007

We have been loyal customers for 30 years, but someting has changed for the worse. The waiters were distracted. The menu has been reduced. The food quality has decreased dramatically. I wonder if management of this 50+ year old gem has changed. We hope they fix this favorite. We will go again in a few months before writing the obituary. more

Great food, warm atmosphere, kid-friendly 8/17/2007

This is the place my family returns to with every opportunity and occasion since 1995. Their food is great, owners and serving stuff make sure every customer is pleased (from old-timers to random walk-ins). Shrimp Scampi or Ciopino are delicious and a tough choice to pick for a seafood lover. My husband loves Lasagna & Veal Scallopine. As for appetizers - you can't go wrong with sauteed mushrooms, fried calamari or bruschetta. If you are there with kids, Tony (chef, owner) will accommodate you with child-friendly picks (like sauce-free and more cheese) and pizza of course! :) Pros: Service, food Cons: Parking could be a challenge more

Beautiful Private Room 6/6/2007

My frineds and I experienced Villa Romana due to a very good recommendation. The private room was so beautiful and food and service were just delightful. The beautiful venue made my birthday truly special Pros: Beautiful Venue more

Do not pay attention to him 5/24/2007

My husband and I came in with our child on the eve of The Bay To Breakers. Villa Romana was very busy and the staff was doing a fabulous job with all the guests. My husband , Bob, was having a bad day, and took it out on the waitress, who was very gracious. In summary, the food and service was just wonderful! Pros: Lasagna Cons: my husband's attitude more

lousy pizza tough calamari pricie only one kind of wine by the glass no kids menu bad attitude too 5/21/2007

pizza was ridiculously uncooked and not as big as it should be -we ordered an 18 incher maybe it was 15- and had to send it back because it was almost raw $26. it came back slightly betther but still uncooked .Calamari apetiser came AFTER the pizza and it was also uncooked and super tough. we took one bite and that was it $10 . No wines by the glass other than chablis or burgundy $5.95. Are we still in that dark age? no kids menu. We asked for a side/kids order of spaghetti with meat sauce for my 10 year old and they said they could do it for $10. we declined the ""generous"" offer. So a bad pizza a bad calamari and 2 beers for $50. What a joke. Cons: expensive for what it could be ,only one wine by the glass, bad attitude ,terrible food more

very flavorful thin crust pizza 4/12/2007

I like their authentic new york style thin crust pizza. it is prepared with ingredients that are so obviously fresh, it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. i am a pizza aficionado and i tell you the truth when i say this pizza is pretty darn good. Pros: REAL PIZZA more

Superb italian cuisine 4/10/2007

Let's just say that we were low on our expectations for this restaurant. We heard it was good, but did not believe that a pizzeria-restaurant could be so great. Pros: Super Italian more

Small cozy Italian restaurant 4/2/2007

Very impressive small Italian restaurant in the city. I was told that it has been around since the early 50's and decided to give the place a whirl. So, I made my boyfriend take me there last night. To our surprise the place was very small, yet very, very cozy. It has nice cozy booths and a very warm and inviting appeal/allure to it. The brick-oven pizza is prominent when you walk in the front door, as is the owner twirling pizzas constantly behind the oven. So, we were seated by the host (tony) and were served by (brian). The food was delivered hot and the presentation was pretty and brian and tony both made sure that we were enjoying our whole dining experience. brian was very busy, and tony was there to pick up where brian left off, almost by design. i mean these two had customer service down to a science, actually an art form! Pros: service and free gift certificate more

Quick bite turned into best meal of my life 4/2/2007

Went to this place with my buddy for a quick bite to eat and ended up having the Best meal of my life. The waiter was a first class guy that simply explained the menu options available and from that point on all I can tell you is that we were chowing down some of the best Italian grub I've ever tasted. Pros: great food more

Best Crab-Cioppino Ever. 3/30/2007
