The owner of Chinatown’s cherished Vietnam Restaurant closed down his original University City outpost in order to build a dimly lit, mod spread right next door to that property. Tiled floors, polished wood tables, nouveau light fixtures and a relatively open floor plan make this a very contemporary spot for U. City students, residents and workers seeking a business lunch, a special weeknight meal or a sake-cocktail laced weekend dinner. The bar, which glows scarlet like a red light district, greets patrons upon arrival yet stakes little claim on the square footage of the restaurant, save a slight jetty of a front nook that guards two low tables and double that number of couches appropriately scaled to match. A side room can be closed off for groups, with a larger front room providing space and state-of-the-art conferencing equipment for corporate meetings.
