Vertigo used to be in Dupont Circle and has been well-known in the area for a long time for their wide selection of diverse fiction and non-fiction, particularly work by African-American authors. At one time, Vertigo was the only place in the DC area where I could find Callaloo, the Virginia-based journal of African-American writing. But for some reason, this wonderful, independent bookstore moved to College Park. They downsized a bit too. The selection is not quite as wide, but it's still one of the few surviving independent bookstores in the area. If you are looking for something obscure, this is the place to look -- if they don't have it, chances are one of their knowledgeable employees will order it for you. Vertigo also is a wonderful place to catch author readings. Some people might avoid independent bookstores because they have fewer sales, but sale books are always widely available here. Highly recommended.
