Great independent bookstore, frequent sales and speakers 1/16/2006

Vertigo used to be in Dupont Circle and has been well-known in the area for a long time for their wide selection of diverse fiction and non-fiction, particularly work by African-American authors. At one time, Vertigo was the only place in the DC area where I could find Callaloo, the Virginia-based journal of African-American writing. But for some reason, this wonderful, independent bookstore moved to College Park. They downsized a bit too. The selection is not quite as wide, but it's still one of the few surviving independent bookstores in the area. If you are looking for something obscure, this is the place to look -- if they don't have it, chances are one of their knowledgeable employees will order it for you. Vertigo also is a wonderful place to catch author readings. Some people might avoid independent bookstores because they have fewer sales, but sale books are always widely available here. Highly recommended. more

Great Customer Service and Friendly 10/12/2005

Always willing to assist you in finding a great book. I recommend visiting Vertigo the next time you are in search of a gift, greeting card or book. more

Great service and help with books 8/19/2005

Lots of remaindered books that are still fresh and readable. Staff knows about nonfiction, fiction, travel, etc. Great art cards so you don't have to send a HallMark greeting. Kid's section in back. Lots of Harry Potter, including cassette tapes. Ask for a frequent buyer card. Ten purchases yields a free book. more

Great Local Bookstore 8/19/2005

Vertigo Books provides a local flavor that gives you a break from the trend of BN and Borders stores that seem to be popping up everywhere. Many professors recommend Vertigo Books to give back to the community and to keep the friendly local feeling around. The store has a discounted variety of ethnic literature as well as fiction books that round out the store. more

an okay bookstore 8/17/2005

they have a small selection, nothing when compared to the bigger bookstores. there isn't much of an ambience in the store, it's like a mix of a retail store and a tiny bookstore - sort of seems like they sold out somewhat somehow. there are no japanese comics, which is very surprising - they would make a lot more money if they stocked those. also, it's a little difficult to find test preparation books there. they do have a few discounts every once in a while, but not much. the discounted books are usually crap, it's really not a good store for students. they really need to think more about changing the layout of the store and their gameplan at the same time more

Falling in love again 8/16/2005

If you only have time to stop at one progressive/lefty bookstore in the DC area, make this your priority. They seem to specialize in Af-Am texts, but they have a great selection for such a small shop; they even have some bargains. The staff is very smart and helpful, and, if you get lucky, a famous author might be reading there tonight! more
