Every review I have read about this place complains about money and how expensive the services are. Well people, its expensive to own a dog or a cat not to mention pay for emergency service/surgery and care for a cat or dog. I have never had a bad experience there. I urge people to not read the bad reviews but to experience the hospital for yourself and make judgement then. more

Went in for an emergency visit @ 1030 am - sat in waiting room for 30 minutes with a bleeding cat. The front desk staff was more concerned about what they were going to order for lunch than how my cat was doing. Anyway, cat needed surgery - they didn't take her into surgery until 930pm (so maybe they didn't feel like it was an emergency - although I was charged for an emergency!) I had to pick her up at 1230am to avoid a ~ $175 hospital over night stay. No one ever called to follow up or to check if she was ok - I have never been to a vet that didn't call to check on an animal after a surgery. All this cost me ~$1300 for a 30 minute surgery. I will never go back there again - My animals are family and I want a vet and staff that are compassionate. more

worst place for an animal 9/23/2014

What a horrible misleading place. I took my cat here with a sore on her belly. The vet said she was just fine after some blood test (which I didnt even see happen in front of me). Said my cat had some allergies to food or fleas, gave her a shot of steroids and some flea medications and we were out the door. Two weeks later my cat is DEAD so im going to say that was the poorest analysis I have ever seen. How can a trained "professional" not see if a cat is fatally ill or not. Instead my baby suffered when she wouldnt of had to if I would have known sooner. DISGUSTING! Enjoy the $450 or so dollars for nothing and for not helping my cat. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 6/5/2014

It's been on month and i still haven't received the results of the bloodwork you did on my dog for the steroids you had her on. Doesnt matter now, she went into organ failure (Thanks to you not informing me so) and died. Thanks for killing my otherwise healthy thriving dog. more

vca the best 6/1/2014

I would like to say that without VCA my terminally ill dog with cancer would not have survived an extra year. they worked closely with the oncology office and when we went to Purdue Univ for a chemo trial they worked very closely with them as well. they were there any time we needed them. unfortunately we lost our dog in april but we were so blessed to have that extra year. in closing I would like to say that VCA has an amazing staff and doctors. we have a new puppy now and will always go to VCA for her care. more

Unless you are a millionaire this place is not for you. I normally have vet to home come to my house for the care of my 6 furry kids. Unfortunately we had a emergency with our new kitten and had to go to this horrible place in the middle of the night. They we're very miserable and way way way over priced. My cat needed to be hospitalized with fluids, and medication for 4 nights. It was $4,120!! They sent her home with Me and she was still very very sick. They couldn't tell me what was wrong with her and she went 100% blind while in their care!! My poor beautiful 8 month old sweet kitten ended up dying the following week. We still don't know why she was sick or what happened. Thanks for nothing! Stay away from this place!!! more

These people are devils! Cold hearted, rude, greedy, and just don't care!!! How many animals have you people ""put down"" KILLED, just for the hell of it. They rushed and pretty much said the only option we had was to put our 4 month old puppy down. I tried everything in my power, and they wouldn't even allow a payment plan. Our puppy was hit by a car and had severe injuries but nothing that couldn't be fixed over time. From Saturday to Monday they said it would cost 2500 to 3000 dollars , and a total of 7000. Not even knowing what was wrong, not even sure if she would need surgery. Yea I'll just pull that out of my pocket right now. I don't like you people and I will never ever say anything good about your hospital. She stressed to me that they need the money to treat her. They left her lay for 6 hours because we didnt have the money. This was a major emergency and they did NOTHING to help. Someone needs to shut this place down!!!!!!!! You will get what you deserve, how can you call yourself a VET?! After they put our puppy down, they had the nerve to say, you owe 281.00. Well here's what I say to you...EAT IT KILLER!!! So sickening and heartbreaking, please people, don't take your pet here!!! more

VCA uncaring 2/3/2013

I called tonight with an emergency with my dog. After being on hold for almost 10 minutes I finally hung up and called back where they tried to put me on hold again. I told them I just needed to know if I could bring in my dog. Without asking what was wrong, I was informed that they has several other emergencies and it would be an hour and a half at least. I decided to rush her to another vet, only to drive by this vet 10 minutes later to see 2 cars in the parking lot! Where are the emergencies? Did she just not want to work? And how could she not ask what was wrong with my dog? This is third third or fourth time I've had a problem with them, and this is the last straw. My dog's life was on the line! Stay away from VCA. They don't care about your pets! more

Unethical, overpriced and poorly trained 3/24/2012

If you want a facility that puts profit over care, this is your place. Your animal will subjected to needless, continuous testing even though there is no cause. You will receive constant mail propaganda stating your pet is due for vaccines and tests when they aren't. Your healthy pet will be suspected to have some condition that requires hundreds or thousands of dollars when no problems exist. You will never see the same vet twice and regardless of how many times your pet has been seen the new vet will require tests or exams that have been performed by the last vet and were negative. They will withhold refills of medication unless you subject your pet and your wallet to more tests. I had been warned by many pet owners to avoid this facility and thought they had to have been wrong because how could they stay open? Pet owners with sick animals are vulnerable to this abuse and Castle Shannon animal hospital is all too happy and willing to capitalize on the concerned pet owner. There is nothing positive to say other than run, don't walk from this place. Poor care, outrageous pricing and rude personnel. more

Worst Experience Ever!!! 9/28/2011

My cat had been throwing up for two days and had diarrhea. He was lethargic and something was clearly wrong. I took him to this PLACE, this supposed veterinary hospital, on Tuesday evening. They took two X-Rays and ran some bloodwork. I was there for 4 hours, all told, and the bottom line was my cat had an obstruction in his stomach. The vet showed me the X-Rays, showed me the obstruction. The vet pointed it out to me. She said, ""There it is."" This is important for you to remember this. She showed me the obstruction on the X-Ray. It was determined that my cat would stay overnight and they would try to get him to pass whatever it was. They gave me an estimate for this and I almost passed out. The estimate was $1,066 to $1,332. They would not even begin treatment until I paid 50% of this, or $533.00. I paid it. What else could I do? My cat was sick. I was then informed that if the obstruction did not pass on its own, they would need to do surgery. The estimate for this was $2,810 to $3,512. With my head spinning, I left my cat in their care and went home. The following day, I waited until noon for them to call me, and when they didn't, I called them. The same vet said they had taken additional X-Rays and the obstruction had moved, but was still in his stomach. She said she would call me later with an update. At 4:00 she did call, and what she told me baffled me into utter speechlessness. She said, and I quote, ""It doesn't appear that your cat has an obstruction after all. It looks like the image on the X-Ray is actually his stomach."" She mistook my cat's stomach for an obstruction. A trained veterinarian. I was completely shocked and extremely angry. I asked her what was wrong with my cat then, if it's not an obstruction. She stated that she did not know, but they would be happy to keep him overnight again to monitor him. Another overnight stay at this incompetent place would have cost an additional $500. I said no thank you and went to retrieve my cat from these unprofessional and utterly clueless people. When I got there, they wanted me to pay the remaining balance of $433.00 before they would give my cat back to me. I refused. I spoke to the supervisor and then to the medical director. They stated that it was not a misdiagnosis, but rather they were ruling out an obstruction. Why then, did the veterinarian point out to me, on the X-Ray, the exact location of the ""obstruction""? Why then, did this same veterinarian tell me today at noon that the obstruction appeared to have moved? It was a blatant misdiagnosis, not a ruling out, and I was thoroughly disgusted by all of this. Bottom line, they would not give my cat back until I paid the remaining balance, so I paid $976.00 for them to misdiagnose my cat and then tell me they don't know what is wrong with him. When they gave him back to me, he smelled awful and had feces in his fur. I will never use this animal hospital again and I urge anyone with a pet to go elsewhere. They are incompetent and charge way too much. I have already consulted an attorney and am considering legal action. more

Great place. 9/27/2011

I have read all the reviews here. The negative comments seem a little far fetched. After trying a few different vets we decided to go to castle shannon vca. We met dr Finn there. She is the absolute best vet we have ever had. Sure it is more expensive here but you get what you pay for. We have never been forced or pressured to have things done for them to charge us more. Dr Finn explains everything in detail and helps weigh our options, especially with our dog being older (10 yr old Rottweiler). She is great and everyone there has been really helpful. more

Terrible service and overpriced 8/30/2011

I would give no stars if I could. I took my cat there when I thought he had a urinary track infection at around 7:00 pm on a Saturday. My regular vet was not open. The doctor said they would have to do blood work to pin point the problem, but they didn't think he had a UTI. I decided to make an appointment with my regular vet that Monday instead. In the mean time, I asked them to fax over his records to my Vet. They promised they would, but they did not. This is only one example of the poor service of this place. My regular vet told me the blood work would have been a waste of money. My cat had fluid building under his lungs. I had stopped going to VCA Castle Shannon 5 years ago when I took the same cat there for his shots and a check up. The doctor asked me if I had any questions. I had one. She answered my questions in all of 10 seconds. Then when I was checking out, I was charged $33 for a ""consultation"". more

Excellent compassionate care! 7/19/2011

I have been a client of VCA Castle Shannon since before it was ""VCA"", over 25 years. I love the staff and doctors. They are so kind and caring. They make me feel at home, and make my pet feel at home and reassured. I would not go anywhere else. There are not many vet clinics open overnight and on holidays and weekends. Im so grateful they are there when I need them. The prices are a bit high, but you get what you pay for and my pets deserve the best. more

Uncaring, poor care for your pet 7/3/2011

They forgot all about my dog when I left her in their care. I was visiting her during her hospital stay and moniors would go off for other animals and no one would be in the kennels for more than half an hour. more

God Bless the staff of this hospital. Wonderful people 6/21/2011

Last month I had to make the toughest decision of my life, to put to sleep my beloved golden retriever. From the moment I made the appointment , to the actual appointment, to the day I picked up his ashes in a little urn they put him in, the staff was WONDERFUL. so caring, so kind, so understanding. They were SO respectful and compassionate. I can not say enough good things about the care my boy received or the wonderful doctors and staff who took care of him for so many years. thank you. You should be proud. You are wonderful people. I AM going to get another dog (hopefully soon) and I will ONLY bring him or her to your hospital. more

A Reliable and Accommodating Vets Office 2/5/2011

I've been to two other vets in the Pittsburgh area besides Castle Shannon and I must say they are very accommodating, knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. In addition, they are open seven days per week and, in addition, are willing to handle emergencies.\r \r As far as their waiting room goes, it's spacious and clean - not cramped and smelly as is the case in other vets offices. \r \r For those kvetching about the staff being rude and the bad reviews, I have no idea what you're referring to. I witnessed the staff assist a woman who walked in off the street and had several questions about her cat who'd never been there before, and they weren't at all rude - however they were extremely busy. They don't fawn or genuflect, which as far as I'm concerned was a relief - I'd rather have someone on staff who is polite and efficient. They impressed me as a staff performing multiple tasks with efficiency and expertise.\r \r I brought my cat in for x-rays on the recommendation of my vet. The more

They are in it for the money. 11/1/2010

I took a very sick cat there. They gave him fluids, an x ray and put him in an oxygen tent. The vet told me that he may have cancer and additional tests would be $1400. When I told him I could not afford that, the price dropped to $1000. Again, I could not pay that and was told the cat had to be euthanized. They charged me over $400. more
