The Vet treatment is good but very, very expensive. Huge markups on meds. Better before VCA took over. Pros: null Cons: null

TOP QUALITY MEDICAL CARE FOR DOGS AND CATS.\r \r I've taken both a cat and 2 dogs to VCA Firehouse. \r \r As far as the dogs, both GSP rescues, my highest recommendations to Randy McCarty and his colleagues. \r \r My first dog had Addison's disease. McCarty took thorough pains to verify/confirm this diagnosis, and throughout her - Gretel's - disease used the VCA network to test, diagnose and prescribe (at no extra charge). \r \r I have no doubt that the very best medicine was brought to bear and a lot of off-ticket time was spent on trying to promote her health.\r \r The strength of VCA - one gets access to all manner of specialists and they make sure of the diagnosis. \r \r Gretel needed regular meds, and needed to be carefully monitored daily and weekly. The Firehouse staff was on the job 24/7. I was not charged for the many (multiple/weekly) phone consultations needed to adjust her meds, diet or understand her situation. \r \r Sadly Gretel died suddenly/cataclysmically of an aneurism, but not for lack of attention and care. \r \r ###\r \r Lately I've recently brought Nellie -- a GSP rescue from DDFL -- to the attention of McCarty at VCA Firehouse. He instantly located an infection in her mouth that maybe accounted for her extremely underweight condition. \r \r Anyway - to be continued. \r \r \r \r more

some of the best vets around...,like most of the others have said, they are expensive...i can afford the cost of a typical visit, but they wanted over $1000 dollars to do a dental with a couple of extractions...i have house call vet that i use for routine stuff but they can't sedate and can't do immediate situations like next day so i started using vca. But my house call vet is affiliated with a clinic, just a long way to drive with stressed cats. that is why i split the biz...so, excellent and i mean excellent vets...ok front staff, and expensive...bottom line...they are a national corporations so they are profit driven...but they also can get the best staff and advanced hardware, that is the trade off... more

There has been a dramatic decline in the front staff. They don't keep the facility clean and they are not able to relay messages to the vet and techs. I don't mind paying more, but I expect good service and this is not what is given. So after years of going here, I am looking for another vet. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 11/25/2012

Great staff but VERY expensive. Most visits are $150-200 for routine exams and recommended shots. My most recent, and last trip, was to take my dog in for a seeping, bloodshot eye. She has been playing at the dog park and I was concerned she either had sand in the eye, or pink eye from another dog. 10 minutes later, I was told it was just allergies and to ride it out for 2 weeks. The bill was $66! No eye washing. No ointment or medicine! I have had other dogs there with a skin problem and they have several vets confer and do a skin scraping and then say they don't know what it is but perhaps we could try this medicine first and then decide a course of action. I don't want my pups to be part of a science experiment. The general consensus always seems to be to run lots of tests and try things and hope something works. more

Not Real Impressed 11/3/2011

I agree w/ the existing reviews. Despite my not having a crazy bad experience, I've never had a great one either and I think it's important to voice this. Even when I call firehouse to talk about making an appointment, once the approximate cost is quoted, I get the feeling I'm being taken for a ride. They offer coffee and snacks, but I can't eat or drink enough to justify paying that much for a vet appointment. more

Ehh ... Firehouse is O. K. 11/3/2011

I agree w/ the existing reviews. I've not had an overly bad experience. As a matter of fact, the Vets seem to be competent and have always been personable towards us. I've worked w/ Randy McCarty twice and saw Beth Spencer once. I liked them both and did get the impression that they cared about animals. I especially appreciated their willingness to call or email me when I've had questions. Even so, I can't say that I've ever had an overly great experience. Citysearch reviews have always proved helpful to me, hence my post/contribution. Pros: null Cons: null more

1st free? Don't think so as they overcharged! And Spencer would rather loose 2 clients, that have repeat business! more

Very Expensive - Ask before you go 11/15/2010

Our vet Randy McCarty is great! Good attention to detail and follow-up. The facility seems clean and everyone is polite. My only complaint is that their prices seem to be very high. The last time I went there to have a watery eye checked on my dog, the bill was almost $90 for a basic exam with some questions asked. It did not include my prescription. They wanted to charge $22 for what I ended up getting at King Soopers for $3. Be sure to ask if your prescription is available from a human pharmacy. If it is...ask them for a prescription or to phone it in for you. more

Profit More Importan than Your Pet! 7/22/2010

I am writing today to explain why I walked out of Firehouse this morning upset and resolved never to visit the facility again. I When I made the appointment over the phone, I was told that the Wellness visit would cost $110 including the required vaccine. After speaking with the technician in the exam room, suddenly the price became $185 because “someone neglected to include the actual exam” or some silly explanation like that. Not a good start. I have a strong aversion to feeling like I got the “bait and switch” so I refused to go forward with the wellness visit. Instead, I decided that we would just get the Bordetella vaccine. Then, because Phoenix had a swelling under his eye, the technician was not comfortable making the decision to administer the vaccine. She wasn’t sure if the immune system might be compromised by a bee sting or whatever….reasonable! She asked the doctor if it would be OK. The doctor came in and spent three minutes explaining to me why it would be best for the dog for me to pay $50 to have an exam first to assure that there was no risk of such a thing. Instead she could have spent thirty seconds looking at the dog and the dog’s eye. Come on, really? It became pretty clear to me that their first priority is revenue and the second priority is what’s best for the dog. Hollow language pretending otherwise is insulting in the face of behavior that is inconsistent with that stated priority. Why would anyone want a vet like that? Pros: Nice Facility Cons: Bad Behavior more

While the prices may be a bit high, it is totally worth the excellent customer service. Dr. McCarty is such an awesome vet...I wish my kid's pediatrician was more like him! He always spends enough time with us and he never acts rushed or cuts us off. He's excellent about returning phone calls and truly explores and discusses all options for your pet. more

Expensive but high quality pet care 3/25/2010

Firehouse has treated our cat well every time we've brought him in, they definitely love animals. But if you are on a budget, this is not the vet to bring your pet to. For what should have been a routine checkup at $60, we ended up paying over $200! The vet ran extra tests but did not clarify that they were not covered in the routine checkup cost. We will continue to bring our cat here because they really are caring vets, but we will definitely ask about pricing before saying okay to any procedures. more
