Excellent Karate Instruction 4/26/2008

My child has gone to the dojo for over a decade. In that time I have seen lots of people come and go. The people who want to come learn Karate and are willing to stick with it can be successful. The instructors who have taught my children over the years have always exemplified dignity and honor. Shihan Malyar is a very thorough and disciplined instructor who not only teaches Karate but important life lessons as well. Often he will use real-life experiences and examples to help students understand that Karate is not about aggression but self-discipline and self-defense. A student who learns at USA Karate will learn to protect themselves and to be prepared to defend themselves when necessary. In addition, USA Karate also holds frequent seminars on various martial arts practices and self-defense which are open to the public. If a person wants to learn the Superfoot system as developed by world-champion Bill Wallace, they can do so at USA Karate and even meet and train with Mr Wallace in person when he comes to give a seminar. \r \r My youngest child will be graduating this year and in part I credit his years of training with Shihan Malyar with helping him to develop the skills that he has used to be successful in school. He will probably be going to ETSU where some of the instructors at USA Karate also teach. Pros: Excellent Instructors Cons: Parking more

Great school with skilled instructors and nice facilities 3/25/2008

I've been going to this school for years. Curt Malyar is a skilled instructor and works very well with his students. His instructors are highly skilled as well and do a good job of motivating the students. Even though I do not have kids I notice that the instructors are patient with them and keep the training fun. The parents I know with kids there seem happy with the program. I am an older student and they have helped me make great strides in my physical conditioning and reflexes. I enjoy my workouts there. Pros: Good facility and great friendly instructors Cons: none more

Avoid at all costs! 3/5/2008

I will never again be sucked into a contract like I was with this place. After a one month trial, where everyone was on their best behavior, I decided to sign my kids up for a full year. That was the biggest mistake of my life. Within a month of signing a YEAR LONG contract, one of my children was being treated badly by the teacher. Within six months both of my children were being pitted against each other, just another addition to an already tense situation every parent knows as sibling rivalry. Good job (please note that was sarcastic). This guy spends more time lecturing the students than teaching. He is rare with the praise. He tells instead of shows. Oh, and his most important thing, making sure to exlude certain children because he doesn't like them. He does not work well with children and has very little patience. My recommendation, research and find another place to take your children for karate. They'll be better off. Pros: Nice building Cons: Instructor more
