This is one of my favorite Charlotte restaurants. I have to order the Ahi Tuna every time because it is simply the best. The service is also wonderful. They have multiple people who are very knowledgeable about wine so please ask if you are interested in something new. This is our ""date night"" restaurant. more

Great Sunday Brunch 3/3/2011

Normally I have a more descriptive headline, but I really didn't find much that stuck out to me other than the food at the Sunday brunch here at Upstream. This past sunday I popped into Upstream, located in Phillips place in South Park for their perpetual Sunday brunch. The set up is unique for the fact that they have both a brunch buffet as well as a small tapas menu which you have unlimited access to for as long as you choose to stay. I'll break the food down between tapas and buffet. First, the tapas. There were about 8 selections to chose from for the tapas and each one I had was great. I tried the crabcake with poached egg, smoked mahi mini tacos and the brioche french toast (my least favorite). Each of these delicately worked tapas are of great quality and have good flavor. The waffles with peanut butter cream looked great, but just was too stuffed at that point to try that out. Now for the buffet, this is a rather intricate buffet for brunch, but it works. To start off you have a table with fresh fruit, rolls and croissants. The next stage is a made to order omelet station. The omelet chef is very friendly and may get you to step out of your normal liking to try some of his freshly prepared ingredients. Your best bet is to order the omelet, get some food and go back to your table to eat for a bit and come retrieve your omelet a while later as the waiting line gets a bit long at prime times. After the omelet they had a seasonal shrimp and grits table which I did not try. After that section, there are hand carved prime rib roast and salmon tables with skewered chicken and shrimp. The next section has a nice selection of starches ranging from mac & cheese to roasted potatoes and a few options in between. The next two sections were unique to a buffet for me. A sushi bar and raw shellfish bar. I'm still not too sure how I feel about that...Finally a dessert bar with yougarts, puddings, lemon bars, brownies, coffee cakes and more fresh fruit...All were good and fresh. Overall for the price tag of 25.00 per person it is a good move IF you're hungry. There is something for everyone whether you want breakfast or lunch. The quality of the food is good and the only real problem I had was with the skewered shrimp which were extremely overcooked and almost inedible. I think that the hand carving stations could use a training session on how to cut portions better, more specifically excluding the majority portion of fat that comes on the standing rib roast cut of meat. more

My husband and I dined here a few months back. While we were fairly pleased with our dinner (not overly, considering the price, and our service had been VERY slow). It was when we got up to leave that our experience began to fall apart. We decided to sit outside on the patio since the weather was nice. When I got up, I heard the people behind me gasp, and I looked down to see that I had a huge water stain on the back of my pants. Apparently, the cushion that I had been sitting on still had a little bit of water in it. Now, you might be thinking, how could I not notice that? Well, it must have been very slightly seeping through, and, since I had been sitting there for an hour, I just didn't feel it as it was happening. When I got up, I was so embarrassed. The mark covered half my backside. We had wanted to head to Dean and Deluca for dessert, but there was no way after this. I quickly dodged out of the restaurant and showed my husband. He was very upset and told me that I should tell the management. So I went back inside and did just that. They could have cared less. At first Ken, the proprietor, didn't even believe me. He argued with me, and acted like I was trying to get a free meal. After about 10 minutes of going around with them, he said that they would give a coupon for one free meal at another time. Oh boy. Well, after all that, there is no way that I will EVER return to this place. I left feeling humiliated. Spend your money elsewhere. Best seafood in Charlotte 6/28/2008

We love this restaurant. I cannot say enough about the overall experience, from the helpful staff, the amazing food that I think about for days later, the quiet atmosphere, etc. My husband brought me here for my birthday in February. I still remember my meal clearly it was so good. We had the appetizer tower special, and I loved each and every bite, especially the calamari. The dinner we had was the Bento box for the night, which is different depending on what the chef chooses to go in there. There were four selections in the box, my favorite being th tar tar. Overrated! 4/2/2008

Read a few reviews...some were negative, but my boyfriend and I decided to try it anyway--it never hurts, but after the first appetizer, we realized we made a big mistake--SHOULD HAVE LISTENED! We ordered a few of the skewers and the Dim Sum Trio; the food was cold and tasteless (something you're better off making at home with it tasting BETTER)! I would never recommend nor would I ever return. The sushi was decent; you'd be able to find the same quality every where else (and more variety elsewhere), but the rice was not fresh and was also cold. The presentation was not up to par with other fine dining restaurants. Although the service was good, the food was of mediocre quality and not fit to be categorized under ""fine dining"" or rated so highly, especially with a well-known reputation. more

A great dining experience for a special occassion 12/27/2007

My husband and I wanted to go to Upstream for our anniversary however, he had read a couple of negative reviews and was going to cancel our reservation. The manager convinced him to come in and try the restaurant and I am so glad he did. We had a wonderful, knowledgeable server and special attention since it was our anniversary. We decided to go all out and had a appetizer (the tower), salads (fresh, mesculine greens), entrees (bento box and sea bass, their specialty) and dessert. I have to say that the food portions were good and the food was exquisite. It was everything we wanted it to be for our anniversary dinner. The atmosphere was quiet and warm. Even though there were other people in the restaurant, including a couple of larger parties, we felt very comfortable and enjoyed our meal. The tower appetizer was spectacular, I highly recommend it. Our salads were fresh. And the entrees blew me away. My sea bass was cooked perfectly and my husband's bento box was a perfect taste of 4 different items. In fact, I'm going to have the bento box next time! I really hope you at least try the restaurant and don't be afraid to tell the server or manager that you are going off of a recommendation from Citysearch. more

Bring Paycheck 6/7/2007

It was a nice looking place and my husband and I were greeted at the door and seated right away. But when we looked at the menu we were very surprised at the prices. They are apparently very proud of what they had to offer. The cheapest bottle of wine was $42 and it was a no name. We ended up getting a nice bottle of something we knew for $54, and to me that is outrageous for wine. Tavern on the Green in New York isn't this expensive. I was not expecting it to be so expensive. The portions were very small and the presentation was boring. The waiter did not explain the specials very well to us and I felt like he was rushing us to decide. For these prices, I deserve to spend some time here. My husband got the Grouper which was small and really had no flavor. I got the Sea Bass and it was very good, but for $37, I was expecting more. Sides are not included. Our starters were good, but very small. 2 very small garlic egg rolls for $10, it was a joke. So My advice is don't go here if you are hungry. Becareful of some of these reviews that give it the best rating, some of them sound just like employees. In fact one of the descriptions sounds familar to what the waiter had told us of the place when we told him we have never been here before. I am not implying it was him, but I am sure it was an employee. For these prices I better leave filling full! Fantastic Wine List/ Great food!!!! 4/1/2007

I was a sous chef at Upstream for a couple of years, as well as their other restaurants, like Mimosa and Arpa. The only restaurant in the group that I still eat at is Upstream. For those of you that go there to eat an ""American style"" meal of 40 pounds of food, yes, you will be dissapointed. The reason the dishes are smaller is so that you can actually enjoy a couple courses without feeling like you ate a lead balloon. The wine list is fantastic, although restaurant style pricing marks it up a GOOD bit. I probably shouldn't tell you this, but if you bring in a wine that is NOT on their wine list during brunch on Sundays, the corkage is free (normally $20). I recommend this place for the QUALITY, not the QUANTITY!!! After all, what is a good meal if you feel like you have to go buy a pair of pants that is 4 sizes bigger? Go to a buffet for that! This place is awesome, and worth every penny!! Pros: Valet Parking/ ""Day boat"" seafood/Brunch Cons: Very busy Fridays and Saturdays!!! MAKE RSRVTNS!!!! more

Great Seafood 2/22/2007

A Favorite! 4/14/2005

My husband and I have eaten here several times and I love it! The seafood is excellent - we always get the trio of appetizer - the calamari in particular is delicious - flavorful and not chewy. The fish is always perfectly cooked - not to done, not too raw. The decor is very cool - the ceiling is designed to look like you are sitting underwater. I think this is a great date place, but it is a lively date, not a quiet, romantic date. Like the one reviewer said, the restaurant is not big, but I thought it was ""intimate"". Great restaurant 3/22/2005

Upstream is one of our favorite restaurants in CLT. Their sushi is the best in town and their oyster bar is hard to beat. We generally sit at the bar where the service is great and the cocktails thick. Their tuna tuna tuna served three ways is one of our favorites and shouldn't be missed. All of their sushi is amazingly fresh. They have original rolls among other known favorites and all the food is complemented by a great atmosphere. I'd wish they'd get rid of the TVs in the bar. No-Way! 1/8/2005

Okay I read the reivews and ratings for this place and decided to go for my B-day, Well I must say I've never been more disappointed!!-First the size of the place is a ""Joke"" its nothing more than a mid-size room with a bunch of tables ""CRAMMED"" in and the noise level is outrageous! Secondly the prices for the food you recieve are ""WAY"" over blown. Take my advice do not go here if your hungry-YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED! my date was equally disappointed as well, If you want good seafood and a nice romantic setting do yourself a big favor and by-pass this place. I sincerely hope this isn't the best seafood restaurant Charlotte has to offer! Pros: Parking Cons: , Noisy Place, mediocre food more
