Last week, I made an appointment with Universal Carpet Cleaning for Saturday, February 25th. I attempted to make the appointment online through their website but never received a call back, so I called the number and spoke with someone (James, apparently the company owner) and explained that I'd found them online and wanted to make an appointment. He asked some rudimentary questions but seemed like I'd interrupted something, and I ended up volunteering most of the information normally required to make a carpet cleaning appointment. Red flag #1. Red flag #2 happened when no one arrived at 10 am on Saturday, and I had to look up the number to call and confirm that the appointment had been made and that someone was on their way. James (Jimmy) answered and said he was on my street and had called and left a message for me at some other number, but had no idea what that number was. I explained that I hadn?t received a call. I guided him to my house and he came in, started looking around, and promptly announced that ?he charges extra for dirty carpet.? Now, before I address that, let me explain that my carpet is an oatmeal colored Berber, and is probably about 10 years old, but it?s not filthy by any means. I don?t have any Koolaid spilling toddlers in my house, and no dogs. My carpet was steam cleaned by Sears within the past year (and they were pleasant and did a pretty damn good job, I might add. When I stated to Jimmy that I was expecting to pay the $129.00 he had advertised on his site for my very small house, which included 2 small bedrooms, a short hallway, living room/dining room combo, and tiny office, and that I wasn?t expecting the carpet to look brand new by any means, just clean, he said the following: ? I explained on the phone that I charge extra for stains.? I said, ?Yes, but I don?t have any stains. Look around.? Jimmy?s reply: ?I charge extra for dirty carpet.? At this point, I was pretty annoyed with his general rudeness and crappy attitude, so I answered with ?Well, how often do people call you to do CLEAN carpet?? That?s when he said that he?d pass on my cleaning and left.
