I used to go here a lot, but after moving to the suburbs, I haven't gone in more than two years. But this past weekend I met a friend there, and the food and service were just as...

Open Mic 5/27/2006

Uncommon Ground hosts and open mic night and the sound that bounces around this little place is amazing. You wouldn't be expecting such good sound in a place like this, but it pulls it off. They also have a large selection of drinks. If you are a martini person then make your way over here, because they have got some interesting ones. more

Good Local Establishment 5/19/2006

The fire is a cozy touch, and goes well with the "accessorized" bar/comfort food (think burgers with salads, twelve dollar pasta, etc.). Drink prices are comparatively expensive, therefore I would not go here to get my "drink on," but for a nice meal with friends, or even my mom, Uncommon Ground is ideal. Parking is okay, but mostly metered in this neighborhood. The waiters are also okay, but they don't stand-out. more

Like the food and drinks, weird service 3/10/2006

The food and drink selection (alcohol) is pretty good, but kind of expensive in relation to the type of place this purports to be (a casual neighborhood eatery/coffeehouse). The burger was good, as are the salads and one of my friends recommends the chicken sandwich. Most of the beers start at about $5 (the good beer anyway), wine is $7 or more and the martinis, if I recall, were about $10. There is a nice fireplace and plenty of seating; I'd like to return for brunch. However, one of my experiences included a server who strongly resembled Lurch. He wasn't bad, just "looming" and slow-talking with minimal words. more

More than a Coffeehouse 3/9/2006

Uncommon Ground is more than a coffeehouse. They have a great menu with delicious offerings. They also have a full bar. The front houses the bar and is more casual. The second room has more tables for dining. The back room is where the entertainment happens, from poetry to musicians. It can get a bit crowded in the back, but it's a lot of fun. more

Great smoke free Chicago coffee house 12/29/2005

I usually go here to listen to my favorite singer songwriter friend Julie Frost create her magic in this classic coffee house setting. The stage is raised just enough, the lighting is just right, and anywhere you sit is close and intimate. The sound is good enough so you can hear the lyrics. The air is smoke free, the coffee and pastries are great, the food is good too. The management of this place does a good job of creating a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. I have also attended workshops here, met friends to hang out, or just came for an espresso and a pastry. http://www.uncommonground.com/ more
