The Prima Donna? It's the owner 11/3/2007

Extremely disappointing. My whole family was coming to visit, so I researched BYOBs online for hours, trying to find one that would represent the Philadelphia BYOB scene the best. What a mistake! We had the displeasure of meeting the owner, who was unbearably rude. We politely inquired about getting two separate bills for our party of 6 and were told " I bring the bill, you figure it out" by the owner. So we charged everything on one credit card, and when the server came back with the credit card receipt, 25 extra dollars had been charged. No explanation was given so I had to request one from the owner. He irritably reported that his staff had not charged the right amount on two of the dishes, and when I suggested that it would have been nice to have an explanation right away, he said "it is not my fault my staff is lousy". I expressed my surprise at his attitude, and he started yelling at me, so aggressively that both my husband and father had to enjoin him to remain polite. This did not really cause a commotion in the dining room because there was only one other occupied table, odd for a Friday night but understandable in the end. The food was fine and although "lousy" according to the owner, the staff was very pleasant and polite. However, in the end, it was a very bad experience and I felt obliged to apologize to my family for putting them through it. There are myriads of better BYOB in Phila, avoid this one! Pros: staff was nice except owner Cons: service, ambiance more

Heavenly 3/5/2007

I just found my new favorite restaurant. Everything about the place was the heavenly- from the gnocchi to the easy-going and charming manner of our host, Massimo. I love that it's a BYOB, but if you're rushed like we were, you can select a bottle from their wine list. We were able to linger over coffee- no server hovering over us, eager to turn the table. And the food- well, I've not tasted Italian food better in the fine city of Philadelphia. It's even more fantastic considering that those prices just about anywhere would be a steal- to find them in the heart of Center City was kind of like Christmas. more

WOW!!! YUM!!! 3/22/2006

My girlfriends and I always make this a stop after our day out on the town. The gnocchi is to die for!! They are so light that they feel like marshmallows in your mouth! I need to know their secret. The atmosphere is great - a tad dark, but great and you always feel welcome. We have been there so much in the past 2 years that I think we should help run the place. Definitely check it out! more

Grande Vivanda! 1/12/2006

Had our team luncheon at Trattoria PrimaDonna in early December. Wasn't sure what to expect, having found the place over online. After speaking with the chef, I felt it was worth the gamble. We couldn't have been more pleased. There were easily 15 of us who spent nearly the entire afternoon eating, drinking, listening to opera, enjoying each other's company and generally relaxing in the quaint atmosphere. The staff could not have been nicer/more accommodating. We brought our own booze; the staff even mixed our cosmos for us! Our server was wonderful (sorry, don't know her name, but you were fab). Food was primo, reminding me so much of the food my mom used to make. Fresh, simple, nothing too trendy. From start to finish we had a wonderful time. We'll definitely be back. Our compliments to the chef and staff of Trattoria Prima Donna!! Pros: Inexpensive, accommodating, great atmosphere Cons: None for me more

Don't Take a Group There! 12/3/2005

I took my management staff and their spouses (22 people) for holiday dinner on Friday night. What a disaster! I had arranged for this dinner in October, but it was very badly handled. We were seated at 6:00pm...our food was served at 7:30pm. We had 15 minutes to eat before leaving for a concert. The food is good here...my wife and I have dined here here before...but this was just awful. more

NOw That's Italian 3/30/2005

What an evening of dining pleasure. Started with a simple escarole soup with Chicken meatballs, wow what flavor. Had a half portion of gnocchi alfredo (very accomodating) and I was not disappointed. The gnocchi were so fresh as if they just finished making them from scratch in the kitchen. The veal piccata was very tasty and the veal was tender and light. My companion had the grilled scallops over greens and the cannelloni. He enjoyed every bite. We also asked for cappellini aglio olio to accompany our main meal and this dish was so delightful we were glad we ordered it. What a tremedous night. The service was excellent and the hostess was friendly and approachable. Don't miss this place. We are from Northern NJ and this place can challenge some of the best places in NJ/NY. more

Fine Dining experience with scant cost 10/15/2004

Had a great dinner of homemade gnocchi and a seafood soup. The gnochhi literally melted in my mouth but the soup was just ok, only because it had too much calimari, which I am NOT a fan of. But the amazing thing was that with a $30 bottle of wine (a great suggestion by owner Michael-one of the greatest restaurant personalities in Philly) and dinner for 3 it cost only $100. Most unheard of for Center City food of that quality. more

Excellent 3/22/2004

With no reservations, we felt lucky to get a table at this great restaurant; what a fantastic find. Although the wine by the glass was just ok, the meal was unbelievable! We shared a grilled calamari salad that was delicious. The pompano with capers and butter was amazing, as was the veal chop stuffed with prosciutto. The above, with 3 glasses of wine, before tip, was around $75.00 (We had all specials regular menu item prices were in the $14 range.) Pros: Near "Ave of the Arts, Nice Staff, Fantastic food Cons: , Just ok BT Glass wine more

Fabulous 3/21/2004

Had dinner there 3/18 and what a treat. We split our selections to 2 specials and 2 menu items. First was two appetizers, calamari, which was perfectly tender and topped with two jumbo shrimp for a very nice treat. This would have been enough for two. If we had known it was that large a portion we would not have gotten the grilled scallops (special) but I'm glad we did because it too was fabulous. Dinner was the homemade gnocchi ($10 what a deal at $10!!!!) and the NY Strip Pizziola (special). Gnocchi were excellent and the steak couldn't have been better. I'd go again in a heartbeat. Oh, they allow you to bring your own wine too. Pros: Food, Location, Value more

Best Kept Secret 3/4/2004

We are lucky enough to live a few feet from this spectacular restaurant. There is nothing particular fancy about it, but the food is delicious. I go for more of the traditional (typical American) dishes while my husband likes to be adventurous. We've had everything from their homemade pastas (canneloni is excellent!) to a whole pompano de-boned table-side. It's one of the city's best kept secrets. Pros: Treat regulars well, Great menu, BYO more

Pleasant dining experience 1/30/2004

This is not the most upscale Italian restaurant in town, but you get a lot for the reasonable price. There are some menu items that are EXTREMELY good and the authentic accents of the staff and the decor add a nice touch to the dining experience. Definately ask for the molten chocolate dessert - it is unbelievable and not always mentioned. more
