Tortola is a very low key and pleasant salon. Heidi is, by far, the best stylist out there. She is attentive, insightful and has an incredible memory. If I bring in a picture o...

Went there because my friend recommended it. I wanted something fun but left with a soccer mom haircut. Didn't know how to properly style curly hair. Pros: Friendly staff

Amazing haircut - top notch service! 7/7/2008

I have been going to Tortola for haircuts and blowouts for several years and can't recommend it enough. It is a highly professional, client-oriented salon which really caters to your every need, and at a reasonable price at that. As soon as I walk in for a cut, I instantly feel more relaxed! Everyone is always so nice and accomodating and I'm always taken at my scheduled time. All of these qualities make Tortola so unique and special, particularly in NYC!!. The salon itself is very clean and comfortable with lovely decor.\r \r I can't say enough about the owners Tom and Joe, who are extraordinarily friendly individuals and who really take pride in making their clients happy. I also have had great cuts by Joey and Heidi, both of whom are also pros!\r \r I always walk out of Tortola feeling like a million bucks and consistently have a lot of fun in the process!\r \r \r \r \r more

Paradise in Tribeca 6/22/2008

There is no better place in New York City for high quality, and very reasonably priced hair treatment!\r I have been a devoted, very frequent client for over seven years. Tom and Joe, the proprieters, are two of the nicest, warmest, and most genuine guys to work with, with no pretense or agenda other than making you feel comfortable while they work their craft to make you look your best. \r Although not something they typically do, and with the 'slightest bit of pressure', (okay, maybe a bit more) they recently opened the salon on a very hot and sticky June Sunday, when they could have been at the ocean, (thanks again, Tom and Joe) to my daughter and her bridal party, and then some, to prepare us all for her wedding. In the friendly, and relaxed atmosphere of Tortola, we enjoyed hours of fun, food, and music as Tom and Heidi calmly worked their magic on us all. One bride, five bridesmaids, two moms, one grandma, and two little flower girls were treated to a 'day of beauty' as we enjoyed the cool, and comfortable atmosphere. And, Joe walking in with freshly baked brownies was the topper! As my daughter told Tom, ""I'm having so much fun, I don't want to leave.""\r Although my daughter was clearly the main attraction, we were all treated like stars, and walked out looking fit for a ""red carpet."" \r Tortola is a comfortable, friendly, reasonably priced, class act, with only skilled professionals working there. I have always been greeted, and treated with respect, and have always walked out looking my best. So often, I have been asked where I have my hair cut, and never hesitate to give Tom Kollar's name with confidence, knowing that he is a skilled and experienced hairdresser. \r Take the trip downtown to Tortola Salon ; It's worth any effort it takes to get there! Pros: anything you could think of is a 'pro' for Tortola Salon Cons: may be a little out of the way for some upper east siders, but worth the trip. more

My hair is beautiful now... 1/12/2008

I have been a client of Tortola for over twenty years. The reason for this is that they are amazing at what they do. \r \r Tom Kollar always cuts my hair and I have never been anything less than thrilled with the results of his expertise. I don't have to worry about what my hair will look like when he's done, because he takes the time to ask questions about my preferences and needs. My hair was too long and the ends were frayed and feeling crispy, and it had no shape. When Tom was done I was amazed at the transformation my hair had undergone. It was shiny, and full of body and life. \r \r Thanks, Tom for another gorgeous haircut!\r Pros: service, experience, attention to detail, results are spectacular, ambience, quality of products used more

A HAIR SALON THAT CATERS AND NOT INTIMIDATES - - LOVE LOVE IT! 1/7/2008

The best salon experience in NYC. I've been going for such a long time and I am never disappointed. I've only ever gone to the owners. Tom Kollar for my haircut and Jo Castagna for my color. I used to hate having it done before I found them. Not only are they amazing at what they do, but the ambience is low-key and they take special care of all their clients. All of my changes (long to short, brown to blond, etc.) I always looks fabulous! Do yourself a favor and head downtown! You won't be sorry! more

Warm and inviting hair salon 1/5/2008

Tortola is the best!!!! I have been going for years. It is owned by the two nicest guys in the world, Tom and Jo.\r They treat me like family. Jo does my color and highlights, and Tom cuts my hair. I am constantly asked where I get my hair done. I live uptown but would never consider going anywhere else. Anyway, I always make a stop at Century 21 while I am there. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! more

TORTOLA IS THE BEST!! 11/18/2007

I have been going to Tortola to see Heidi for about 5 years. She does my cut, color and I love my hair every time I leave the salon. I always get tons of compliments. She has taken my color dark to light back to dark and has styled my hair for numerous occasions. She also does great makeup. I started going to the salon bc i worked a few blocks away and now I am working in midtown, live on the UWS and will only come down to Tortola to see Heidi. The people are really nice, friendly and the salon always has fresh orchids. Definitely give it a try and see heidi! You will not be disappointed. more

What an AMAZING place! 10/4/2007

I have been going to Tortola since 1988! Everytime I'm out of town and attempt a cut or color elsewhere, I have only complaints. I love the work they do, always willing to listen and give you exactly what you want. Unless of course your having a mid-life crisis and then they politely tell you how hideous your ideas would be, thank you!!!!!!! Will never go anywhere else, love this place! more

Best cut & color EVER! 9/4/2007

Tortola is the best salon I have ever found! I moved out of New York and haven't got a decent cut or color yet! The atmosphere is what you would expext in Tribeca, no pretentious attitudes or competition. I was very relaxed and didn't want to leave the chair. Stylists are VERY educated on what will work for you! Pros: Great prices and friendly atmosphere! Cons: None! more

Avoid! 12/27/2006

This is the first time I decided to post a review for anything but I feel so strongly about it that I just had to....\r \r If you ever have an urge to go to this salon, please avoid Melissa by all means! Hairdressers like her must not be allowed anywhere near human hair, she doesn't know how to cut it, less so to do layers. I walked out with clearly defined TWO layers, and with one side shorter than the other. I could have done a much better job myself. And this is not a cheap salon! \r \r Don't know about the rest of the hairdressers there but unless you want to throw away your money avoid her. It was my only time at the salon and will be the last. I feel like someone went through my hair with a blade while I was asleep and chopped it off, I can't look at it or touch it (well, there isn't much left to touch!), luckily it's just long enough to pull it back! Pros: when a haircut is that bad nothing can make up for it. more
