I recently stayed at the Gershwin. The hotel is cute and has a certain appeal. The concierge is helpful and the lobby looks great. The guests are European. HOWEVER, this hotel...

after booking it for a long weekend getaway in feb with my wife , we found this to be a fantastic budget hotel in a most exellent location in manhattan , close to loads of great restaurants ( hill country on east 26 ) bars and all the major attractions , is in walking distance of 4 of the metro lines so getting uptown/queens and downtown/brooklyn was so easy , lets be honest , this is a budget hotel so if your expecting the ritz then get a life , we took a suite on the 8 floor , 2 large rooms and a bathroom. Plenty of space. \r Also regarding the heating. Midtown is run by a communal heating system. It is widely know that radiators his and clang from time to time. If you want to go there, it will happen at any place. We just turned off the rads at night. Its not hard, you just turn a knob on it! \r bed was very comfy , room was on the road and you do hear the city , but then ive never stayed in a silent city so thats not a problem , \r birch coffee shop in lobby is great ,\r shabby chic and artisan , if id stayed here in london i would have payed twice the price and some ,\r a real newyork apartment experiance \r loved it ............ more

I travelled to New York alone a couple of years ago and stayed at the Gershwin and it has never left me! I just wanted to take time to recommend it online.\r \r Rooms are much more spacious than typical accomodation in this price bracket, and it has a lovely quirkiness about it I just fell in love with. It was very NY apartment living style but within a hotel, giving the option of meals when required. Bed was comfortable, I slept soundly at The Gershwin, and the bathroom was huge. Very professional, the staff were attentive and helpful when required but pretty much left me to my own devices otherwise. Even the lift up to my room was a treat! \r \r It has a great location, lots to eat and drink nearby and there are a few parks within walking distance for some quiet outdoor time. On my busy days in the city I was happy to return to this hotel to recharge and felt safe walking home to it, a particular point of note when travelling alone. \r \r Not only did this hotel provide me with a safe, clean and characteristic stay, The Gershwin really added to my NY experience. more

This place is my favorite place to stay in NYC when not at a friend's since it's a good deal, and does what you need it to do, with a bit of style points. The rooms are nice and cozy feeling, although modern without being too trendy. I hadn't heard about that model floor, but you can't do photography around the open areas without any prior approval. more

I'm a 23 year-old grad student and this hotel is awesome. My girlfriend and i stayed here 4 nights over spring break for $423. Yes, that's an awesome deal for a great location.\r \r Let me address a few things:\r \r 1) The Staff: the staff at the Gershwin are better than any hotel I've ever stayed at. They always greet you when you walk through the lobby and are more than willing to give you advice about things to do or to help you find your way. A few of the other reviews mentioned having problems with the staff, this was in NOT my experience at all.\r \r 2. The Rooms: If you think the rooms at the Gershwin are small, you must live in a mansion. There is plenty of room for two and the room decor is very trendy (or so my girlfriend tells me.) A maid came every day, yes just like those big expensive hotels, and cleaned our room and made the bed. One final note, in our bathroom there was a poll that ran near the door. It carries hot water to the floors above and was extremely hot. It is not marked and I made the mistake of touching it once. So, if your bathroom has a random pole running through it, don't touch it.\r \r 3. WIFI Access: WIFi isn't free at the Gershwin so before you come to visit research locations around the hotel with free wifi. There are a few coffee shops on the surrounding blocks with free wifi but the wifi in the hotel coffee shop did not work while we were here.\r \r In summary, the Gershwin is great and I would and will stay here the next time I'm in NYC. more

This place provided by favorite hosteling experience in NYC. Great, funky and chic decor, great coffee shop attached, and the entire city at your doorstep in this convenient location. I've already made reservations when I come back to New York on business in a few weeks. more

A castle fit for an Aquarius. So unique, with funky, colorful walls adorned with original Warhol artwork on every floor. Get on the elevator. No you are not drunk, it is a hologram of a man and his apple. Discover a book at the library. A French love story perhaps? Enjoy your free wi-fi and funky lime green seat in your room, but be very cautious of your behavior if you are in the one with the 4-ft painting of Picasso, staring into your soul. more

My wife and i stayed at the Gershwin hotel for 5 nights on a very cold March city break, we found this hotel to be an exellent place to stay. tha weather was very cold so any time we came back from one of our many walks we always found our room very cosy, nice and warm ( no trouble with heating as previous reviews) as was rest of hotel. The staff were all very helpful , any problem we had was taken care of, the Reception area was having a bit of a renovation when we were here, lifting old floor tiles to reveal original marble floor back to 1902 style, Our room was a bit basic, but it was warm, very comfy bed, large flat screen tv, great shower, and no noise from other rooms. We were on 6th floor ( room 631) and had no trouble with the lift, it was old, smallish but we never waited too long for its arrival. Birch coffee shop attached to hotel is a great place to start your morning, cheep n cheerful, the location of this hotel is greart, central for a lot of main attractions. Would stay here again if only to see complete renovations, reccomend more

Everything about The Gershwin was very good: price, location, service, room amenities. Very nice cafe (loved the grilled cheese!). It had everything that we needed: very comfy bed, flat screen, free wifi, shampoo, hair dryer, nice towels. Even a little sitting area and windows that opened. We didn't even have any city noise! They were remodeling but it didn't bother us. We originally booked only 1 night because we weren't sure if we would like it but ended up staying for 3. Definitely recommend. more

Great value for downtown 7/21/2009

In a great area of Manhattan, walking distance to 90% of the attractions. Pros: Amazing location Cons: Rooms are a little small more

great location, terrible hotel 6/12/2007

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights. We where originally given a room at the front of the hotel and for the first 2 nights put up with very loud nightclub across the road and even louder patrons and police in the early hours of the morning. This combined with the light streaming in through the cheap wooden window blinds left us with no sleep. When I tried to take this up with the staff they where not in the least bit interested. I ended up paying to upgrade our room so that we could move to the side of the hotel.\r The rooms where small - no suprise in new york and very basic - no suprise for the price but the art on the walls did not make up for lack of charm, poor service and bar/cafe/theatre as described on the hotel's web site that did not exist. Pros: great location, very funky looking, interesting history Cons: poor service, tiny rooms more

What a DUMP! 12/6/2005

In a word? SHABBY - not chic ! Between the heat in the room (steam heat) that you can't control, puny water in the shower and a room that looks like it was last painted in 1960, I was apalled. The hardwood floors were waterstained and should have been redone in 1970! I couldn't stop gave me the creeps. Cons: hot room, cold shower, ugly art on the wall more

Bad from the start 8/9/2005

Traveling on business trip with three others. When we arrived at the hotel we were told they gave our room away (two bedroom suite with one queen bed and two twin beds). We were told we could have another room that was a one bedroom suite that had two rooms. They would put two roll away beds in the room with the couch and the chair. We really did not want to sleep on roll away beds. The manager was called and we were able to cancel our reservation but now needed a place to stay! What a pain in the neck! I will never attempt to stay there again! Cons: Gave away a room! more

Best place for the money in NYC 6/17/2005

Happening hotel that offers great rooms for the price, extremely spacious compared to other NYC rooms. Recently opened cool bar in lobby. I have stayed here many times over the past 6 years. It is always changing, but consistently best priced & best value. Pros: spacious rooms, bar, best value Cons: small elevator, no parking more

Unbeatable 4/7/2004

I was really pleased with the Gershwin Hotel. From price to service to location I dont think I could have done better. Before coming to NYC I read a lot of reviews and saw a few negative comments about this hotel. But from the time I showed up to the time a left I didnt experience anything but comfort and great accommodation. I think that some people just like to be negative, even if its unwarranted. I travel very frequently and if I could stay in a place like the Gershwin in every city, believe me I would. Pros: Location, Price, Service more

Decent rooms- great price 2/29/2004

After reading the reviews, I was skeptical, but attending an event in the hotel, it was the best option. Pleasantly suprised! Clean, colorful, but VERY basic room. Don't expect the Plaza! Like staying in a friend's studio apt. Great new bar called Gallery on the lobby level. Friendly staff. Heard guests complaining about the cable tv not working, but I don't go to NYC to watch TV. Pros: inexpensive, great bar, friendly staff Cons: , hotel parking is far more

Nightmare on 27th St. 4/7/2003

Service was terrible, no wake up call. No towels, rooms fit for 1 small child, bed was 30 years old, creepy clientelle, 1925 elevator, no food, no bar, no newspaper. Trust me skip the ""soup can"" and pay a little more and you will be better off. Cons: small, lame, dumpy more

Too cool to care! 11/25/2002

Ersatz trendiness doesn't hide tired rooms, inadequate baths. Staff are so cool that they can ignore clients. more

  • The Scene
There's no getting around it. The facade is bizarre, with its massive, white tongue-like awnings and paper-mache-looking teardrops. It's clear right from the start that this is...
