Went there on a Tuesday night and was pleasantly surprised to catch the group Brasil Live with the most amazing Brazilian singers I've ever seen. This Brazilian band is made up o...

Worst

I don't want to be a whiney person who complains about bouncers and door people, but yesterday's experience was more than an annoyance. One of my close friends had his birthday p...

Not bad 10/31/2006

I'm kind of surprised that this is ranked as the top dance club in NYC. Don't get me wrong--there was minimal hassle/cover at the door, the ambience was good, and the music was great most of the time. However, it seemed to me that this was just what a basic clubbing experience should be. The Village Underground doesn't really go above and beyond in any way that makes it particularly special or awesome in any way. It's fun to go with a group of friends, but don't expect anything amazing. As long as you don't have over-elevated expectations, you'll be able to relax and have a good time. Pros: Generally hassle-free, fun experience Cons: Nothing spectacular more

Didn't even realize it existed 7/25/2006

We didn't realize this place was owned by the same people as the Fat Black Pussycat. We had a great party, and we loved the DJ last Friday night. more

I heard a rumor about rumor, and it was good! 3/20/2005

But...someone should tell the guy who keeps writing the same message over and over in different words to stop because it's obvious that he works at this place or he REALLY loves it and wants others to think he is actually multiple people. The whole message, followed by a space, and then a final punctuating remark, i.e., "fastastic, just fantastic" or "the ladies are hot, real hot" is very poetic but a just a little too obvious. more

My 25th Birthday bash 12/16/2004

I had my party on December 10th 2004 (I was the girl on top of the tables) and it was a blast. I had a 100+ people show up and it was the best time I had in a long time. All my guests loved the place and said it was the best party they have ever been to. The crowd is mixed (which I love) and the DJ played great music that got everyone grooving. Definately a hot night and will highly recommend anyone to go there to have a few hours of socializing and dancing more

Posh and Refreshing 9/14/2004

I go out all the time, to all different spots... lounges, restaurants, openings and clubs. What was so refreshing about this spot was that it was sexy, trendy, upscale, with barely any attitude. Music was great, no repeats of the same song throughout the nigh, you know how that is... Staff was very good. Decor trendy & comfortable and the vibe was - let's just say trendy New Yorkers with super high energy and fun. Very, very Refreshing- Pros: trendy, intimate, refreshing more

Nice 9/11/2004

Went to Rumor, Saturday night. My friends and I got a table. Met a ton of girls. Danced and chilled. Very cool, very cool. Erin more

the spot 9/8/2004

I 100% recommend Rumor as a place to visit and frequent. Really, had a good time. The table host was great, and treated us as true vip clientele. The girls were hot and the vibe was out of control. Check it out- you will come back more

SICK 9/5/2004

So much fun... my friends all went out to Rumor over this past weekend, Saturday night. Of course since it was the holiday weekend, we were not sure how the party would be. When we got there the place was rockin, witha really cute crowd, nice vibe. We were so happy. The night was a blast and we strongly, strongly recommend this spot to others... A must check out.- Pros: music, dECOR, dancing more

No Cover - Wow 6/19/2004

About time somebody took another approach to upscale dance lounges. No cover, 3 rooms, GREAT djs and no attitude at the door. Nice Job Pros: Friendly door policy, Decor more

Insane 3/25/2004

This is by far the hottest party in the city. There are so many beautiful women, I didn't know what to do with myself. Dancing on couches all night long, insane. It is definitely one of the best crowds and best vibes in the city. Highly recommended. more

It's a rumor!! 3/17/2004

It's a nice place to chill after work with friends. The only thing I hate about the place was the mandatory coat check line which took so long. It makes you not want to go inside. What kept me from leaving was the good music that was playing which lured me downstairs. All in all, the ambiance was nice and I would go back again, but in the spring and summer months. Pros: Nice lounge setting, Good drinks, Great music more

beautiful ladies 2/1/2004

WOW! I have been to Rumor several times now. I went this past Saturday and was blown away. There was like 3 times the amount of girls to guys. Needless to say I had a blast. Def. going back this weekend. Guys, I suggest grabbing a table and hanging back and getting some of those beautiful models at your table. (LOL) Music was amazing! Everyone in the room was having a blast. Pros: beautiful girls, great setup, music more

Fabulous 1/25/2004

Lots of fun. Great looking crowd. I dont know why people wrote those bad reviews.. I think that the place is out of control. I had a blast and recommend coming back. Definitely Definitely fabulous Pros: great music, great crowd, fun fun more

Worst Place......EVER! 1/22/2004

The place was empty and me and my friends (along with hot girls) still waited outside for half an hour. THen we waited another half hour for the coat check. The place was cheesy with pretentious people a plenty. We decided to leave after having a horrible time and the lady at the coat check lost my scarf. The bouncer and manger refused to give me my 3 dollar coat check fee or 10 door fee. I wound up walking home and FREEZING Pros: Nothing Cons: Loser Crowd, Loser Help, Idiotic Coat Girl more

Rumor is AWFUL! 1/5/2004

This place is the WORST! My friends and I planned on partying there for New Years Eve this year, we bought all of our tickets in advance and got there at about 10:30PM....After waiting on line for almost an hour and a half we were told we couldnt get in because the place was too crowded- REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT WE HAD ALREADY PURCHASED TICKETS! We were forced to head across the street just in time to miss the 12:00 Ball Drop- don't waste your time or money at Rumor! more

good time 12/2/2003

i dont' understand what everyone is complaining about. like every club and lounge in manahattan, the doors are always strict. we waited for 10 mins and go in without a problem. the doorguy was actually very friendly compared to most of the doorguys out there. my only complaint is that the dj did not play any house music. my suggestion is to get there early and make sure you bring enough girls or get a table reservation. Pros: crowd, atmosphere Cons: music more

Attrocious!!! 11/24/2003

Never Never Never go here! and particularly not if youre thinking of having a party here! i am usually very easy going and content with most places i go however, the way we were treated at this place was beyond belief! The staff is rude and incompetent!!!! especially those at the door! i have been going to the most sought after clubs and lounges in NY for years, and have never ever encountered such problems!!! i had a party here recently, my boyfriend ended up having to wait outside all night to make sure the bouncers let my friends in (even pretty girls)!!! we were on a list too! once in...you were not allowed out for a cigarette or anything at all if you wanted to come back in..the whole night was overall very stressfull...unnecessarily. the place is very chic and well put together physically but NOT worth it!!! more

Rumor 11/23/2003

Went with a bunch of friends and was pleasantly surprised. Combination of a lounge and a club - together. Lots of fun, great music, tons of people. Great new discovery! It did take a while to get in but I am glad I waited. Pros: music, people Cons: waited a while more

Avoid it like the plague 11/22/2003

My roommate celebrated her birthday at Rumor last night. Inside, the decor looked chic, the evening seemed promising. But then the bouncers kept the subsequent guest list waiting outside for no apparent reason. My friends could not go outside to smoke; otherwise, they had to pay the $30 cover charge to re-enter the bar (and some did). The alcohol tab totaled $900 even though we only ordered one bottle of vodka -- and this is after Rumor claimed to have "comped" a bottle of champagne. Admittedly, there may have been a few more small drinks like a Red Bull included, but not enough to equal $900. The bar also double-charged a friend's credit card. Overall, the service was deplorable. The chauvinistic bouncers constantly made inappropriate comments to ladies. The managers seemed clueless and inebriated. No one helped resolve the situation, and as a consequence, we shall never return. Cons: poor service more

One word, ghetto! 11/16/2003

I and a few of my single girlfriends went there last saturday, hoping to meet some cool people. If you are single, and want to meet some attractive people, don't even bother with this place. Waiting in line (wasn't even that long anyway), and dealing with annoying door people didn't really bother me. What really bothered me is when I got in (after waiting for 30 min in line and paid $20) and saw this ugly and cheesy looking interior, and nerdy-looking, very ill-dressed and not-so-attractive(being nice) people (girls and guys). Obviously beautiful people belong to beautiful places, and Rumor isn't one of them. Pros: Music Cons: Everything else more

Editorial
  • The Scene
It's just off the insane, touristy fray of Bleecker Street and 6th Avenue, but don't be discouraged by location--or the drab entryway. Descend the dark stairwell and enter a haven for people who just want to let loose in a no-holds-barred, no-pretensions kind of place. Hundreds of miniature, reflective glass domes cast a warm light on the crowd of bankers, hipsters and stylish out-of-towners. A lounge with banquette seating sits a step above the main bar.

    The Draw
The lack of VIP area and the accompanying surly bouncers is refreshing. The piped-in music varies from hip-hop classics to '80s mainstays, all of it eminently danceable. While the steel-framed banquettes were specifically designed for dancing, many get used for semi-clandestine coupling, no doubt encouraged by undetectably potent drink specials.
