My Favorite Local Spot PERIOD!!! 4/13/2010

Can I say my favorite place in Pasadena now!!! I know they have been getting a lot of hype due to newspaper, bloggers, and the like but I think they deserve it by all means. Ray is such a nice owner and his wife Amy and Mom all work there. They strive to make sure your Slaw Dog experience is excellent. When Ray said to me, ""now that I understand you particular flavor palate I can better design new tastes for you"" I was blown away. This is a hot dog stand right??? Wow to take into consideration this type of thing is like a chef would do and he does it with ease. We have come up with some off the menu items, ok so he has and I ate them. I have discovered that their burgers are very good, two in particular. 1) Pork belly burger with onions and mushrooms (?) 2) Burger with Roasted Pasilla Peppers, Jalapeno Bacon, Pepper Jack, Onions, Sport Peppers Chopped, and Chipotle Mayo- This is my very favorite menu item right now......you can call it the Kevin C. Burger and see if it catches on Dogs of mention: 1) Porkbelly Dog 2) Beer Brat with horseradish mustard, hawaiian bread, red cabbage (only ray knows what is in this...not sure) 3) Vancouver Dog 4) TNT-Modified with sweet potato fries, sport peppers, the egg and jalapenos (try the whole thing DEEP FRIED, if you dare!!!) 5) Pesto Dog- for that lighter meal that doesn't have too many calories 6) New Market Dog-Farewell to Winter-sweet potato fries, crispy sage, garlic aioli, carmelized onion, swiss and bacon all on a spicy sausage Other Items: Ginger Brew Sweet Potato Fries with truffle oil, Parmesan and garlic ""Magic Fries""- Sweet potato with garlic and curry powder Their new ice cream, sorry I forget the details but it is rare chocolate. What can I say Slaw Dogs? I think I have been there about 15 times now, it is so hard with you being one mile from work and one mile from home, not to eat here every meal. Nice to see you have a line out the door now, I can remember when it was just one or two people waiting. This is well deserved and just image when they get beer. Pros: Friendly Owner willing to take suggestions Cons: I will be very fat if I eat here every day more

First impression is no impression 4/5/2010

A midwestern transplant who knows his Vienna beef hot dogs, brats and polish sausage, I was really disappointed in just a simple hot dog.\r \r First, if you order a hot dog, Do Not get the combo. $3.50 extra for mediocre slaw served in a little coffee cup, a soda and 1"" square x 1/2"" brownie.\r \r Fix the menu. They tell you the first 3 Standard Toppings are ""free"". Wow! Here is what some Standard Toppings are, that could cost you 40¢ each:\r relish, 2 peppers (these are NOT sport peppers, they are the kind you get at the taco stand), a dash of celery salt, and diced onions.\r \r Haven't tried the ""gourmet stuff"", if the basics aren't there. Go to Taste Chicago in Burbank. Pros: Don't know yet Cons: Bad parking, menu needs tweaking more

Gourmet Dogs! 4/1/2010

For a variety of reasons, I have been rather remiss in writing reviews. Mainly because I'm lazy and secondly because I'm lazy. Slaw Dogs has inspired my lazy bones to get up out of the slump and meander on over after a refreshing 10 mile hike with the gang. (and when I say refreshing, I mean it was torture and 10 miles means 10 miles up a vertical incline, barefeet, in the snow, both ways.) What the hell were we thinking? \r \r Everyone I spoke to along that dusty, rocky hellish terrain all had their sights set on one thing, and it wasn't to be found at the top of Inspiration Point. Nope, we were all frothing at the bit to get up that crazy hill and back down so we could all reconvene at Slaw Dogs and pig out, guilt free. \r \r My uphill hiking buddy, Matt and I were dreaming about what we were going to order. I already had it in my mind that I wanted a spicy TNT but Matt had to go all renegade on us and he decided he was going to wait and see what moved him once we actually got there. Either way is fine and frankly, both ways work. After I strong armed him into making him split his dog with me and thanks to Valerie for giving me half of her hamburger and Kevin for sharing his yummy pork belly and kimchee fries along with a bite of his fried parmasian encrusted dog, I got a pretty good sense of what the fuss was all about. \r \r As Kevin stated on our way down the hill, the owner is a savory sommelier. He put flavors together on his menu that work amazingly well together or he can make suggestions for you and allow you to concoct your own doggie treat. All of the ingredients are there at your disposal. If you don't enjoy your dog, it's because you are not taking advantage of what's available. \r \r I'd say it's a little pricey for a dog, but if you tried to dress up your dog at home using the same quality ingredients, you'd be paying about the same price. Additionally, no one seems to complain about the gross dogs at Dodger Stadium. In my humble opinion, ""tradition"" shouldn't have to taste like it was made 30 years ago. They practically butt rape you with the price and then, to add insult to injury, they underwhelm your tongue and tummy with the tasteless, rubbery tube they pass off as a dog. Let's not even get into the wet, soggy, WRINKLED, yet chewy crap that is alledgedly a bun. (The words wrinkled and buns should never be in the same sentence, ever.) \r \r No thanks.\r \r Slaw Dogs is my new dog house (yes, I went there, shut it.) \r Pros: Friendly service and quality and varied toppings. Cons: Spendy for dogs but still well worth it. more

You need to get a least 2 hot dogs to be full and that would costs you more then $10 with a drink. Pros: Pretty good hot dogs Cons: Not much dog for $5 more

Fantastic Hot Dogs 3/5/2010

Pasadena has been void of a good hot dog since The Hot Dog Building Co. left many years ago. Slaw dogs does an excellent job serving up a delicious hot dog with any and all of the trimmings you could want or expect. They have regular beef, kosher and even soy dogs to satisfy most palettes. \r The one big disappointment for me as a cole slaw connoisseur is that their cole slaw does not come with every hot dog (wha???). Not only that, it costs $2.99 and the serving is a skimpy 1/4 cup. I actually looked under the lettuce leaf in the bowl to see if there was more hiding under there. For the same $2.99 you can get about 1/2 pound of french fries. It makes no sense, especially since ""slaw"" is in their name.\r If you ask me (and I know you just did), they should serve 1/4 cup of their yummy slaw with EVERY hot dog in keeping with their name and then offer to sell it additionally as an extra side, a pint or 1/2 gallon for us to take home for parties, etc.\r Hopefully they'll see and correct the err of their stingy slaw ways. In the meantime, it will only slightly diminish my enjoyment of their awesome hot dogs. Pros: Best hot dog I've had in a very, very long time Cons: The cole slaw is ridiculously expensive more

Custom hot dogs and burgers 2/26/2010

I have been to Slaw Dogs numerous times now after my fiancee got super addicted! I have had the original slaw dog as well custom made dogs based purely on what I like. \r \r The cole slaw is a refreshing topping that really adds to the flavor of the hot dog and whatever other topping you so choose. I love the jalapeno bacon that they wrap around the dog. The combinations of dogs and burgers that you can make are probably up in the hundreds! Sweet potato fries are also super yummy and the perfect consistency.\r \r Ray, the owner, is super cool and chill. He if very open to suggestions since they just opened. If you can't decide, Ray will make you something if you just tell him the flavors you like. They also give you a piece of Amy's fudge if you order the meal that comes with fries and a drink. Pros: Jalapeno bacon! more
