It's worth driving up here to eat the yummiest pancakes around....the orange juice is fresh (not Tropicana) and the prices are on the down low. Amazing food for not much dough! Lo...

Editorial review from Citysearch 1/19/2013

What a refreshing place to have breakfast if you are north of Austin. \r \r It does NOT look like a run down IHOP at all, though it IS in a strip mall. We did have a waitress that had been working there a long time, information which she volunteered and she said she LOVES working at OPH and it showed on her face and in her attitude. Anyhoo.....\r \r Cheerful, peppy service, happy waitstaff, coffee refilled quickly, normal sized glass water glasses (I hate those gigantic red plastic too-tall glasses). I ordered the apple pancake, my sister the dutch baby. Both amazing and way too big. We could have shared one, maybe even three people could have shared. That's how big it was. Order the apple pancake, it's really not a pancake, and the leftovers (there will be leftovers) you take home, warm it up and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. Blue Bell, of course. Silverware was not that cheap aluminum stuff, where you get the occasional flat fork. This stuff had a heft to it. j\r \r I saw the bacon and it looked amazing. Other dishes coming out of the kitchen looked huge and delicious, but of course I can't say if they tasted the way they looked.\r \r I was so happy I over-tipped. more

Amazing Pancakes 8/14/2009

Restaurant was clean and we were quickly seated. There are a lot different pancakes to choose from.\r \r I had the chocolate chip pancakes and could have continued eating them until I passed out. They were like heaven. Pros: Pancakes more

Has the Original Flavor 4/12/2009

We were craving pancakes today and the wife mentioned ""Original Pancake House, (us being from Portland) and not knowing there was one here in Austin. I knew better and so we went. Service was good, coffee, pancakes and dutch baby tasted pretty much exactly like the ""Original"" Original Pancake House in Portland. The only complaints I have were the syrup containers are cheap and leak syrup all over and are sticky even after cleaning. The interior is sadly bland, uninspired, cold and uninviting. The waitresses don't wear the cool old-fashioned pink uniforms, just sloppy street clothes. No one seems to take pride in their appearance anymore. But, the food is very good and prices are reasonable.\r Go for the good food and great pancakes, but don't expect the ""total"" experience. Pros: Menu items taste the same as in Portland Cons: Uninspired interior, stuck in a strip mall more

Wonderful breakfast 11/11/2008

I was born and raised in Portland, OR where the original pancake house was first started. I was a little skeptical to try the one in Austin because i didn't want to be disapointed (the on in portland is the best breakfast i have ever had, ever!). There were a few little differences (the quality of butter is not very good here and they don't use actual cream for ther coffee) but overall the food is just as good as in Portland and it is cheaper here!! So if you re looking for a good breakfast i would definitley recomend it. and if you ever go to portland you have to go to the original one....be prepared to wait and also have cash. Pros: good food, cheap prices, no wait Cons: slightly different then the original more

So Many Pancakes...How Do I Choose? 11/4/2007

There's nothing fancy about the decor but the menu has some special dishes. My favorite are the banana pancakes. The service was fast, the food was good and the price was right. Pros: Parking, Location, Service more

The best breakfast in town period 8/28/2007

Anytime I am coming to Austin I plan my trip to allow enough time to stop in for the best breakfast in town. I can not think of any time we have been disappointed with the food or service more

Excellent Pancakes --Great Specials During The Week 11/3/2006

When I was growing up, I hated the pancakes my mother made from Bisquick, however I love the pancakes here--especially the buttermilk pancakes --so light. I come during the week for the specials. It's cheaper and the restaurant isn't as busy as it is on the weekends. I've never had the coffee here. I drink Anderson's coffee at home. Breakfast at The Original Pancake House never costs more than $6.00 for me, because I take advantage of the specials during the week. Pros: Great pancakes and weekly specials Cons: Very busy on weekends more

Finest breakfast in the NW sector! 7/19/2006

To those breakfast tightwads complaining about the OPH's high prices, I might only respond with the classic, ""ya gets what ya pays for."" The chicken crepe is classic comfort food, if a bit bland, and you'll probably take home two-thirds of it; why not? The pancakes, including the signature Dutch Baby, are justly famous. As per their advertising, the ingredients are top-notch; if breakfast is your thing, if you don't leave this place happy, it's your own fault. The decor isn't much to look at (but it's clean), and you have the added bonus of some of the best waitstaff in Austin, who know what their customers want, when to bring what they need and when to leave them alone. Improvements? The management should look into procuring a few more pieces of artwork for the walls, and work on the coffee. But leave the food alone. Pros: Easy access, unique food items, quality Cons: Bland decor, slightly burned coffee. Not for Atkins dieters. more

Good service, higher prices 6/30/2006

I like Pancake House -- been there several (4-6) times. Service is very good, with hard-working wait staff, sometimes they seem short-staffed. Wasn't as busy last time, maybe due to new competition nearby.\r That said, it is not my ""first choice"", like it could be. I haven't been to others, but while this is a very GOOD breakfast place, with fresh-made plates of pancakes and omelettes, DO the prices really have to be so High??? For one plate of whole-wheat pancakes, one $8.99 omelette plate, and 2 coffees, our bill was about $21 after tax. Coffee was $1.85 a cup, and it's not even very good. \r This is the ""signature"" coffee blend they say they have in their info ? Also, the main site shows a the original Pancake House to be a quaint old-fashioned coffee shop. I might not mind paying $22 for breakfast in a place like that, but this IS in a strip center. \r With all this said, it wouldn't take that much to raise this place a whole star in my book -- like give us a break on the coffee prices, unless you are offering primo good coffee! It leaves you wishing you could sneak in a cuppa Starbucks from a few stores over. Also, if they could just lower the prices just a little.... I would go there more often. \r more

Best breakfast anywhere 6/9/2006

I've gone to the Original Pancake House in several states and this one is right up there with the rest of them. The food is made with all real ingredients, made fresh and hot, or cold as necessary, as you order it. Nothing here comes from a premade source. What this means is the food tastes outstanding.\r \r There is a downside, being a great Breakfast restaurant means that folks will flock there when they are commonly free at breakfast times, thus, if you go on a Saturday, or worsse a Sunday after Church, expect a line up and plan ahead. Also note that since the food is made fresh, it will take time to get to your table... to me, this is a sign of a quality restaurant, since it takes time to make quality food fresh AFTER it's been ordered. Be patient, your patience will be well rewarded! Pros: Excellent freshly made food Cons: What cons? more

Very Enjoyable 4/30/2006

A good home-style breakfast. Accommodating service. Sometimes you need to wait for a table but not an extensive wait time. Nice presentation. A very nice meal that is satisfying. Pros: food presentation, home-style food, satisfying more

Just not up to par! 10/16/2005

I was so excited to see that Austin actually had one of the famous Original House of Pancakes. Unfortunately, after trying this location several times, its get my thumbs down. The coffee is not the usual best in town, the waitress just don't seem to understand that they should serve the toast with the breakfast instead of after you've eaten your meal. The Dutch baby is very good, I'll still give them that. But I think next time, I'll stop at IHOP for breakfast and then come in to Original House of Pancakes for a Dutch Baby. Sorry guys, you really need to work on alot of things and make this place the Original House of Pancakes is supposed to be all about. Pros: Dutch Baby Pancakes Cons: Coffee , service , food is average more
