I don't know what the previous reviewer talking about. Just because you had a negative exeperience with ONE physician, doesn't mean the hospital is bad! This is a TEACHING HOSPITA...

I wont go into too much detail but I blame them for the death of a loved one. They do not care about the patients and honestly I'm not sure a lot of them know what they're doing at all. more

TERRIBLE ADMIN! 5/21/2012

I wish that I had read these reviews before commiting to a surgical appointment in this hospital. My first appointment with the surgeon, I was 15 minutes early for a 1pm appointment. Everything was well, until 1.5 hours later, at 230pm, the doctor still has not showed up. I checked with the nurse and was told the doctor is coming ""soon"". I threatened to leave in 15 min if the doctor still has not showed up. It is ridiculous to be waiting 1.5+ hours for what I knew to be a 10-15 minute consultation tops. Note that JHH charges higher than most other clinics -- for this visit, my co-pay cost almost $200 compared to about $40-60 in any other consultations in other clinics or hospitals. There was no bloodwork or any labwork, just plain Q&A with the doctor. Then next to this horror story is my experience getting a medical leave form signed. I submitted my form 13 days before the surgery date and called to confirm that the admin staff received my form and was told yes indeed but the nurse is out that day and will call me on Mon or tues the following week. When I received no call, I called JHH and was told the nurse will call me back. Thursday, still no phone call and I called again. Same status, nurese will call me back - still no phone call. Friday, I called and was told the person processing the form is out of the office. Monday, 9am I follow up and was told the nurse will call me back. 2pm and still no call back. I called and was told the nurse will call back. 3pm and still nothing. I call to express my disappointment and frustration at this very unprofessional handling of a very simple request and the admin staff hung up the phone!!! VERY VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I AM SO TEMPTED TO CANCEL MY SURGICAL APPOINTMENT. IF THIS IS THE KIND OF TREATMENT I AM GETTING, I CAN JUST IMAGINE WHAT KIND OF OTHER TREATMENT THIS HOSPITAL GIVES ITS PATIENTS. I HAD SURGERY 4 years ago at WAshington Hospital Center and I had the most wonderful experience - caring, efficient, professional and respectful -- from staff to nurses to doctors. If only I knew. Maybe it's not too late to change to WHC instead of JHH. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND JHH TO ANYBODY! BEWARE FOLKS. more

JHH review 5/11/2012

After 10 months of experience, I conclude that JHH wins the ""Top Hospital of the Nation"" award like Putin the Russian elections. I am a physician myself and went to JHH because I expected good care (amongst other reasons). Many surprising things happened throughout my (cancer) surgeries that are (mostly) not attributable to system errors but to human ignorance/arrogance. After the first cancer surgery had been scheduled - it took 5 weeks to do this since 2 attending surgeons from different Divisions were involved - I was told by NP's from surgery, anesthesiology and doctors from Hematology that my cancer surgery would have to be postponed for 5-6 months (sic!) because the Hematology Division was not able to schedule an earlier pre-op hematology consult (usually takes 15-30 minutes). Being familiar with the health care system I did get it what I wanted for the price of two sleepless nights, more anxiety and a lot of energy. On the day of surgery, the surgeons did not remember important details of the surgery that we had agreed upon. I was about to jump up from the stretcher but remembered that my leave had been scheduled, my own clinics canceled etc.....I felt lucky of having the medical background to push through what we had agreed upon.....In the post-op period, I struggled with answers of ""This is not my responsibility"".....After the second surgery when I was in bad pain and hoped to see my surgeon, I was told he is away for 10 days when he was away only for the weekend.....Lately I asked him a simple question by email and phone call to his office and waited for > 3 weeks to get an answer.... Did I mention that your and the attending physician's name will be displayed on the door to your hospital room...HIPPA forbids this in most other places.... In summary, this place is not better than most other places, and people do not hide that patient care is not the priority....I am sure, I get packaged into some nice research studies....I still think that my experience was not the worst given that people knew I am a colleague who knows how to work the system...good luck to everybody! more

The Johns Hopkins ER 11/16/2011

The doctors who work in the hospital are wonderful. I would not consider leaving my doctors. However, the ER is the worst I have ever seen. AVOID it if you can. I had abdominal surgery and developed an infection in my incision area only 3 days after discharge. The surgeon was on vacation and I was instructed to go to the ER by my PCP. I went there. It took 1 and 1/2 hours to be seen by triage, they gave me IV fluids and promised me a bed asap after 5 hours of sitting (yes sitting no beds) my husband wheeled me out. I just could not sit any longer I was in so much pain I was crying. The next day I went to sergical clinic and they re-admitted me. Now 1 month later they think I might have a blood clot. Surgical clinic closed they send me to ER. I gave Johns Hopkins the benefit of the doubt and went back to their ER. Horrible, worse than the first time. 2 hours 23 minutes to be seen in the triage, another 45 for the ultra sound 4 hours later still sitting upright in a chair in waiting room . After 7 hours enough was enough I asked the nurse how much longer to see the doctor. She didn't know it could be a while. Again I left. . As I asked around the room I should have felt blessed many had been there upward of 2 hours longer than me, and were still sitting in the waiting area. RIDICULOUS 7 hours and no doctor no results I will never again go back to that ER. I wish I could give it a 0 star review,.... more

Avoid! 2/22/2008

This is a teaching hospital. Your body will be used as a learning tool. Someone I know was used for practice there (electrophysiology) and was severely injured. Cons: You cannot trust these people. Conflicts of interest abound! more

Excellent Doctors and Nurses, exemplary former colleagues in Surgery, hampered by manipulative, untrustworthy management 7/5/2007

Walters, who was a highly experienced, qualified Nurse, understood the implications of undergoing a procedure in a teaching Hospital; she expected the Hospital to adhere to the core principals of Medical ethics. Without signing a consent form agreeing to an experimental procedure she failed to receive the ?Gold Standard? of care, i.e.: a firmly established standard procedure of well proven efficacy. There is no excuse for altering or concealing documents. Despite all the sanctimonious preaching about ?honesty, integrity and transparency? Hopkins has repeatedly demonstrated this devious tactic. I once felt privileged to work in Hopkins OR alongside some of the finest Surgeons in the country, but I was frustrated by ignored systemic problems. Regulations were flagrantly violated in favor of ?the Hopkins way,? and deliberate deception during routine inspections was protected by silenced employees. Initially a positive attitude towards innovative employee input prevailed, but the priorities changed drastically as financial incentives precipitated dangerous staffing cuts in Hospitals throughout the US. Despite Hopkins impressive PR spin claims they are no exception to diminishing standards of care. After 5 years of conscientious service, with a strong commitment to patient advocacy, I was fired for blowing the whistle on: ?Deliberate Negligent Understaffing.? I expected honesty and ethical conduct as I sought reinstatement. It pains me to read about ?Patient Safety Initiatives? that I fear might be as shallow as the retaliatory protections alluded to by their Compliance Line. ?JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL INVESTIGATION OF WHISTLEBLOWER?S DISMISSAL; Demand Compliance Accountability? is one of two Petitions on ?the Petition Site? drawing attention to Johns Hopkins altering and concealing crucial documents in a way that is the antithesis of their public pronouncements regarding transparency. Best hospital in the world for a reason 6/13/2007

I don't know what the previous reviewer talking about. Just because you had a negative exeperience with ONE physician, doesn't mean the hospital is bad! This is a TEACHING HOSPITAL, so maybe you should have expected to be seen by residents. Duh! \r \r JHH is the best hospital in the world for a reason. I have seen several physicians here who were all absolutely amazing. I don't mind getting seen by a med student, intern, or resident before seeing an attending. I think it's totally fine and actually one of the reasons this hospital is so great. There are people from all over the world who come to Hopkins because they've been turned away elsewhere. I highly recommend this place and would go back to see doctors there. Pros: The hospitals motto is patient care, teaching, research. No other hospitals in the world even come close Cons: None that I can think of more
