OMG- Somebody say 'Hole in Da Wall'!!! 5/4/2009

Warning: If you think this is an actual lounge, you would be sorely mistaken. Yes, they play cute music, They have, wait let me count: 15-20 bottles of liquor, Nothing on Draft (ha ha), and if you are brave, I mean really brave-you will attempt to order and consume 'chicken and waffles' their most elite dish besides something as ridiculous as 'Soul food sushi', Wow, I didn't know someone could actually pull this off, with about 100 dollar investment and a couple repetitive DJ CD's. Anyway, I would love to continue this horrible and yes, very gracious review but my sweet potatoe fries just arrived and no-they look nothing like the beautiful, thin, flaky, batch of fries I know and love. These are straight Horse Fed Fries, made big for someone with Giant Horse teeth, they look like a cut up apple? WTH more

WE LOVE THE DEN! 2/16/2009

Me and my Fiance love the Den, the food, the atmosphere, music and neighborhood. The Den's food is delicious. I think we almost had everything on the menu so far. My favorite drink at the Den is the Den Dada, and my fiance's is The Harlem iced tea/Get drunk or die tryin' (it varies). Great place for couples very intimate atmosphere. We celebrated Valentines Day here and We had a great time. Pros: food, atmosphere, music Cons: more space for dancing more

The good, the bad and the ugly 1/26/2009

I don't know why I keep going back here, I guess I go every once in a while to remind myself of why I stopped going. While the food and drinks are good, and they do have a good happy hour, the service is horrible, but the last time really did it for me. I called one Friday to make sure there was no cover, they said no cover until either 9 or 10 (don't remember exactly), so the following week I went, got there at 7, and sure enough, the guy at the door was charging $5 to get in. As I stood there waiting for my turn and ready to ask for a manager, the guy at the door was rudely arguing with the man he was helping, telling him he was going to have to wait until he got change....of course. I told the ladies in front of me that I called and they said there was no cover, so they paid and went in and told someone what was going on. As he tried to charge me $5, one of the bartenders came out to him and said ""you're charging people?"" This guy was clearly trying to get his hustle on at the customers expense when he was only supposed to be checking id's. I stormed in and immediately told my friend to go get his money back. He later came in and caused a ruckus with the bartender, dropping a bunch of money on the floor. Pros: good food & drinks, good happy hour Cons: horrible service more

Hot Hot Hot!!!! Great place to bring a date 6/22/2008

I went here with a coworker of mine. We did not expect to have such great food and drinks. The place is a bit small but it makes up for it in food, drinks and ambiance. The crowd is grown and mature. I most def will be going here on the regular. Pros: Everything Cons: Have no complaints yet more

Don't get thrown into The Den 2/10/2008

After seeing The Den featured on G. Garvin's Road Trip, I couldn't wait to visit and experience the Soul Sushi and featured drinks. My husband and I excitedly planned a day in Harlem for my 44th birthday -February 3, 2008. We left Baltimore around 6:00 a.m. and headed to NY. Our reservations were booked for noon for the Sunday Brunch. Cons: Service more

Best Brunch in NYC! 7/29/2007

I have been a fan of the Den for a while now. My girlfriend's and I usually hang out there from time to time. We'll do a Friday or Saturday night. I have had the appetizers and a meal or two and never had a complaint. Earlier today I enjoyed the Sunday Brunch for the first time. I was with my boyfriend and we had a great time. The space was really intimate for a Sunday morning. The lights were really dim with votive candles supplying most of the light. We got there relatively early- 1pm. The brunch is from 12-5pm. We walk in and we were greeted kindly right away. We sat down to enjoy what could be one of the best brunch spots in NYC. Spread out on the bar was an all u can eat selection of two types of chicken, rice, fresh green salad and fresh fruit. But don't eat too much because you are allowed 2 main course choices from the menu. I had shrimp and grits with garlic toast which was delicious. I also had the french toast with fresh strawberries. My boyfriend had fried catfish and grits and also chicken and waffles. You don't get a heaping amount of food on the plate but we left more than full having eaten two entree's and don't forget you can return to the all u can eat buffet again. We also had several mimosa's which were included in the price of $21. With the tax and 20% gratuities it came to just over $53 for the both of us. Everybody looked like they were having a really good time. If you are looking for an intimate spot to bring your man or a few friends this is it. They played good R&B music and we weren't rushed. I do recommend though that you make reservations. I've been to Nolia's Brunch in the village and Copeland's Brunch in Harlem. They don't hold a candle to this! I will return again. Pros: Great Service, Great Price Cons: Ladies room toilet stall unsatisfactory. more

A house party in someone's basement 7/8/2007

This is my first time writing a review but i was so dissapointed by the service at the Den that I believe it's my responsibility to warn others. The food was very bland considering the menu is pretty limited and the service did not make up for what the food lacked. We are told to move to different tables (despite that fact that we were in the middle of dining) because larger parties were coming. The manager was unapologetic and became annoyed over our disappointment. He was very rude and unprofessional. The place is a den (one room) but if you are looking for a ""house party"" (some place small, hot and overcrowded with a rude, obnoxious relative walking around) then the Den is your spot. Pros: The waitress were polite Cons: The manager, the food, the size more

Total Shocker 4/10/2007

I went to The Den on April 7th, this past Saturday. I have to admit I was forced to go by a couple of my childhood friends. We are all from Florida by way of London England. I moved here a year ago, and have not had a chance to really hang out with my buddies. So they drag me to The Den. I walk in and I thought they were joking. The place was not spacious at all. I did not put up too much of a fight. There were some real attractive ladies inside, so I sat down and we got some food. I had a reggae roll appetizer, and then another one, and then another one. The menu titles are amusing. I also had the Weezy Crabcakes. I thought I was trapped in an episode of ""Good Times"" or something like that. I noticed by some of the older reviews, some people did not take to this place. I did! I enjoyed the food, and the drinks. My favorite ""Tony Montana"", which they give you a mojito with a shot of Patron tequila. I floated with these all night. The music was so good and the food and drinks were so great, I did not care how big the space was. It was large enough for me to know I would be coming back. I have to thank my friends for forcing me to try something new. Usually I want to party ONLY in midtown Manhattan, but this place change my mind. Pros: Hot music, great food & drinks Cons: Wish it stayed open until 5 or 6 am and did not close at 4am:>) more

Harlem Nights.... 4/9/2007

I am the best friend of Boobiet03 that took her on 4/7/07 to The Den. I have been to The Den a few times. The owner, Josh has really put together an eccletic, different experience. First off, the menu is different. The names of the drinks and also the food is eye-catchy. You have to laugh when you see the names. They remind you of ""I'm A Get You Sucka"", if you ever saw that movie. It has a 70's feel to this spot. It is architecturally appealing to the eye. The artwork is nice. Exposed brick and a lot of wood and natural tones. I ordered the salmon and I thought it was amazing! I usually order the chicken and waffles but chose to try something new this time. Our reservationist Onya is great and our server Larissa was kind, kept checking on us, made sure our glasses stayed full, was courteous and helpful. The customer service at The Den is a 10+. The place is small but I have to not agree with the other people. It is NOT just a place to get drunk. I had fun. People just moved some of the tables over and had a great time. The DJ was great and the atmosphere is worth checking out. I have never had a bad night at the Den. I have also been during the week, but Saturday is NOW my favorite night. If you would like to know more, you can email me. My name is April. Pros: Crowd, music, food and drinks are great. Cons: The place is a bit small, but everything else is good so you can get past it. more

Hot Spot In The Cut 4/8/2007

I went here on Saturday night (4-7-07) for my birthday with my best friend and this place is off the chain! Yes it is small, but once you're in, you're in! The music was crazy hot! The food was fantastic and the drinks were even more off the hook then everything! We had the best hostess, she was on point with everything! Every time we need a refill, she was right there! If you want some good food, drinks, music and a hide away, this is the spot!! Pros: Drinks, Music, and Food Cons: Small Dance Area more

Harlem's Secret 1/15/2007

I went to the Den this past Saturday. There is a $5.00 cover charge that I really did not agree with since the place is the size of a 500 sq ft studio apartment. Other then that, the place was bumpin? for the time you walk-in, to the time they close. The staff is friendly and pleasant. The drinks are a little high but they were good, I highly recommend the ?lick your lips?. The hot wings are spice and the sweet potatoes fries were sweet. If you are looking for a place where you do not necessary want to dress but just get out, the Den is the place to be. You might want to call in advance for a table reservation. Pros: Great Crowd, Music will keep you moving Cons: Tight (small space), cover charge more

Just ok 10/6/2006

My girlfriend and I went to the Den last night and it was just ok.The place looks much better on the website.I had the Macaroni poppers that were different but ""just ok"" and the catfish tasted like they just threw it in flour and cooked it NO FLAVOR AT ALL.My girlfriend had the King Crab Legs which were pretty good. Our waitress was very polite and on point,I might give it another try but it was nothing to write home about. Pros: Good service Cons: Parking more

Only if you gotta get drunk 9/21/2006

this place is a man fest. Any given night guys are 4 to 1 over chicks. Only chicks here play pool and get stupid drunk. Pass more

Excellent hang out 8/28/2006

The bar is always popping and the drinks are out of the world. The food is excellent, too. Great live music weekly. It's gets too crowded on the weekends, though, and they just introduced a $5 cover, which I don't remember them having before. I guess word is getting out.... Pros: cozy, intimate space; great music; fun bartenders; good value; tasty food Cons: can get crowded quickly more

Hosting not good; food ok; not for the mature crowd 8/16/2006

It took 1 hour before we were served drinks. The hosting was poor. If you weren't a regular clearly you wouldn't feel welcomed! The air condition was too high. more

Great food! Great live music! 5/17/2006

Just went to The Den last night. I highly recommend the ""Stick to Yo Ribs."" They were melt in your mouth delicious. Atmosphere was off the chain! It was laid back yet bumpin! They have a live band on Wednesday nights. The singer was a fill in and he was right on target. I only wish that I could hear the regular. I live in Texas. But, I will most definitely make this a stop each time I visit NYC!!!! more

Spectacular Place for Brunch 5/9/2006

We walked into an empty lounge at 11:59 AM, and by 12:05 PM, all of the tables were full. Make a reservation. The answering machine dosen't inspire confidence, but call later during business hours for a reservation and it will be fine. The food was spectacular, the service was impeccable and friendly. The menu was AMAZING and so inexpensive! If the address causes you hesitation - I can tell you that the neighborhood is beautiful and SO MUCH nicer than the East Village. Ask for the drink menu too - its wonderful. We went for brunch, but we will be back for dinner and drinks! Pros: Great Food, Great Prices, Great Service Cons: Small Lounge, parking can be scarce more

This is the way Lounges are supposed to be!!! 2/24/2006

Remember the vibe in the Sanctuary, that little spot in the movie ""Love Jones""? The Den is a New York version of that. This place was suggested by a friend for a very small birthday celebration, and I could not have been happier! The music is bangin', the appetizers were fantastic and the drinks were TERRIFIC!!! This place is less small than intimate and the vibe is laid-back cool and DRAMA-FREE!!! The man-to-woman balance is nice. I can see The Den as a pre-club, post-club or a club-as-the-club spot. I absolutely recommend this venue for anyone who wants to hang with friends in a place where you have no choice but to enjoy the mood. The Den has easily become one of my favorite spots. I am preparing to enjoy a night there again very, very soon!!! Pros: Drinks, Food, Vibe Cons: Space more

Best Food in Harlem 2/13/2006

Ok, if you haven't been to The Den, you really need to make that happen. I was there for my girl's birthday party two weeks ago and we had THE BEST time. This was a Wednesday and they had live music with really good singers too. The best part was the food though. Every dish that we had was special...even the sandwiches. Plus they have these Soul Food sushi rolls that are one the most unique things I've ever seen on any menu, anywhere. The food was so good that I went back for their all-u-can-eat Sunday brunch and I garantee that there is no better deal in the city that this. I had to be rolled out of there. Anyways, props to The Den, good music, great crowd, and very reasonable prices, especially on the food. The only drawback is the place is just too small. Pros: Inexpensive, Live Music & DJs, Great Brunch Cons: Crowded, Too Small more

awesome... 12/11/2005

I heard a lot of good things about this place recently, so i had to go. I found out why. the place is great, and when i left i swore that this was my new favorite restaurant. the food is great, and not pretentious, real down home stuff with a twist. i love the food and drink names (ie a drink named ""what had happened was..."", lol). the vibe is cool, music is constantly good, and the people are cool, a place for the young and trendy in harlem (or from anywhere really). definitely a great place to go for a date. must try. Pros: good vibe, good prices more
