A Good place for dinner 2/4/2010

To me, this is about as average as I have seen. Everything from the service and atmosphere to the food was unremarkable. The staff was friendly but overall this place is forgettable. Pros: Taste Cons: Lack of flair more

Best Thai In Thown! 7/28/2009

Okay, so I've been coming here for I don't know how long, and I have always had delicious food and happy, friendly service. I am quite sorry for anyone who has not, and would ask that they give it another shot. It's no fluke that this place has made an impact on some very well known restaurant critiquing agents and travel guides; one only need to look at the wallpaper of 4 star review stickers on the front door! Pros: Great assortment of great food Cons: Parking is limited, but who cares? more

Hot n sour soup, coconut lemongrass soup...very good! 10/8/2008

I don't think I've eaten at this Thanh Thao location. We used to eat at their 82nd & Powell location a lot. You're right; they have the best hot n sour soup I've ever tasted. more

I love this place! 6/12/2008

I usually order take out, but their service is pretty good. They are attentive and friendly. The food is DELISH. I don't know how I'd survive if they weren't right down the street from me. I highly recommend the phad phet. It's my favorite and I always get it. Why fix it if it's not broken? I don't care what anyone says. I know I'm sad on Tuesdays when they are closed. Check this place out, you won't regret it! The only thing they could improve on would be to give you more rice with take out. more

Choose carefully and you can't go wrong 9/6/2007

Thanh Thao is a long-time neighborhood favorite of our family. Trial and error has turned up some good food and not so good food. Pros: hearty portions and good curries Cons: tasteless noodle dishes more

You can get better food down the street-- avoid this place 7/19/2007

I don't understand why Thanh Thao is so popular. I decided to try it last night with a friend. We arrived for dinner a little before six and were seated promptly, but I had to get up and ask for menus. We ordered mango juice, salad rolls, pad thai, and pad see ewe. The salad rolls arrived promptly, but were pretty boring. Not great, not awful. The peanut sauce tasted like Jiffy. Our noodles arrived shortly after, but mine was so hot I nearly burned my mouth on it. After letting it cool for a while, I found my noodles really bland and greasy. My friend's pad thai wasn't much better. Our mango juices never arrived and they kindly took them off the bill with an apology. Pros: cheap Cons: bad service, bad food more

The best HOT and SOUR soup around!!! 7/3/2007

It is so hard to find incredible Hot and Sour soup. If you are looking for it, Thanh Tao has it!!!! I keep going back again and again!!! Pros: Easy to find, great food, friendly staff Cons: parking more

:P 7/1/2007

Thanh Thao offers deliciousness for a great price. The more common dinner dishes ran around $7 - $10 with portions large enough for two (especially if you get an order of spring rolls), or if you want it all to yourself there should be plenty for left-overs. The service staff has always been friendly and greeted us with a smile. On our last visit we arrived only a few minutes before closing and at no time did we feel rushed to leave even after we had finished our meal. I also hear they have a good lunch hour deal. more

Best Thai on Hawthorne 6/21/2007

The food is awesome! Twice now we have made reservations for large groups (10+) and the food and service was great. I have yet to have a meal here that I dislike. Try the Pad Thai, any of the curry's, spring rolls, anything, it's all good... Pros: Take out, reservations, quick seating more

Mediocre to bad 5/17/2007

There are just too many good options in this neighborhood to deal with the overcooked tasteless vegetables, bland meat, and dirty floors at this dump. Go elsewhere (Thai Thai for instance, still looking for others). more

Great food, good service, good pricing 3/18/2007

I love the food here. The Mango chicken, Won Ton soup, Noodle soup, shrimp with pea pods...I could go on. We eat here often and are never disappointed. Reasonable pricing. Good service. Try it you'll like it! Pros: Food, pricing, service all good Cons: parking on Hawthorne is always a drag more

Our absolute favorite Asian restaurant! 1/30/2007

Thanh Thao is our number one favorite Asian (Viet Thai) restaurant anywhere. The family owners are some of the friendliest we've run into and generally great service. The absolute ""must haves"" off the dinner menu include-- consistently tasty Red, or Green Curry Chicken Soup (the Chicken Sour Soup is also incredible), an appetizer of Larb Gai (a kind of cabbage/lettuce wrap much better than PF Chang), Penang Curry with chicken or tofu, Mango Chicken, Thanh Thai Special Chicken (their version of General Tso), the Whole Fried Fish and Salted Squid (2nd only to Thien Hong's in Portland). If you are a Phad Thai craver-- I think that is only average. We usually ask for a dinner menu any time we go. You'll get excellent value for your money. Their lunch menu is a basic American-Asian looking selection of specials you might find at any similar restaurant for about $5-6. If for some reason you experience the restaurant on an off day (very rare but I notice one recent reviewer had a bad day), I really encourage you to try it again. Pros: Outstanding soups, Penang Curry & Salted Squid to die for, truly friendly staff Cons: Hard to get seated during prime time dinner hours, closed on Tuesdays more

No thank you 1/26/2007

This place was recommended to me a couple times so I tried it last night while in the neighborhood. I found it to be sub-par at best. The decor is cheesy and it looks dirty. The wait staff was friendly, I'll give them that. And I don't really mind the environment if the food is good. We got the peanut chicken and Mussaman Curry with beef. The peanut chicken was burnt, literally char marks all over. The chicken was fatty and full of gristle and even a piece of bone. I had higher hopes for the curry but when it was served it looked like beef stew from a can. It was thick and gelatinous with chewy, shaved pieces of beef. There was no discernible coconut flavor in the dish and in actuality tasted more like baby food. I was completely disgusted. The servings were monstrous though, so if you're into bad Thai food, you can have your fill. Given the number of great Thai restaurants in Portland there's really no reason to dabble in this lacking endeavor. I will not be going back. Pros: Friendly service and large portions Cons: The food, man, the food more

GREAT FOOD, GREAT PRICES 8/18/2006

I had lunch here recently and it was great. The lunch special comes with soup, won ton, spring roll, white or fried rice and your choice of main dishes from a list of probably 20-25 main dishes, all for $5.75! My main dish was the Thanh Special Chicken (similar to General Tso's chicken) and it was super. The service was great and the food was wonderful. My friends both had the noodle bowl with barbecue pork and shrimp and raved about it. In fact, the lady sitting behind us wanted to know what that was so she could order it. Highly recommended and I will go back! Pros: GOOD FOOD, GREAT PRICES, GOOD SERVICE Cons: STREET PARKING ON HAWTHORNE CAN BE A PROBLEM more

best food, super cheap 7/23/2006

I love this place. The food is always so delicious and the servers are always very quick & nice. Favorite foods are the chicken & green beans, and the eggplant with garlic sauce is out of this world. Pros: great food, inexpensive more

Delicious 4/21/2006

I love Thanh Thao. The menu is has a variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. The hot and sour soup is delicious. They will make food to order. Dishes are plentiful and I always go home with a to-go carton. The service is friendly. Its a casual atmosphere and works well for a group, solo or duo dining. Enjoy! Pros: Good Food, Good Service , Satisfying more

Good if you like chicken 3/21/2006

The eggplant with garlic sauce is addictive, and I like this place now that I'm not a vegetarian anymore. However, when I was a vegetarian, on more than one occasion I ordered mock-chicken and was served chicken. They were not at all sorry, did not offer to replace the meal, and insisted on charging full price. That's a lot of nerve! They also do use MSG - I have had reactions to this from the soup, but not from the main dishes. Stick with the dishes that you know, and make sure it's gluten and not chicken! Pros: eggplant w/garlic, location Cons: service, MSG more

The soup, it's called Tom Kah, and it's awesome. 10/6/2005

I just finished a large ""to go"" container of the Tom Kah soup, and I feel amazingly high. Thanh Thao is one of the original Thai places in town, it's not a chain, and it is owned by people who know the food and culture. It's not in the best fancy building. It's not westernized with mood lighting and american music. It's real. and real good. I go there to get great Thai cuisine. Don't forget to customize the spice level... Pros: Location, Tom Kah Gai, Price Cons: It's bright inside more
