I had heard good things about Texas Borders Bar & Grill and had been wanting to try it for awhile. We had a buy one, get one free coupon from the Entertainment book, so that was a good incentive to go and try it!
When we walked in, it wasn't exactly what I had expected. It was kind of small and dark inside. The bar area is at the front and it was pretty crowded and there was a lot of excitement because the Astros game was on. There were TVs all over, so that you had a good view of the game no matter where you were seated. I think they have live bands on the weekend. It's kind of smoky smelling even in the non-smoking area. There are also tables outside on a deck area and I think this area is larger than the inside, but it was too hot outside for us to brave it. There is a sandbox and a children's play area with a large wooden play structure as well as a smaller area that is set aside for toddlers. It is supposed to be for toddlers only, but there were quite a few "big kids" playing in there so I didn't take my daughter in.
There are a lot of menu options - they have everything from burgers and chicken fried steak to a variety of sandwiches including muffalettas. We ordered wings as appetizers and even the "mild" ones had a zip to them! At our table, we ordered the ham and cheese sandwich, which was HUGE. It was served open faced. We also had the Austin chicken sandwich which I heard was awesome and I got the taco salad. It normally comes with chili con queso on top, but I ordered that on the side. The taco meat was a little overdone, but other than that, it was really good and the homemade ranch dressing was a special treat. The kid's meal has some interesting choices. I was going to order macaroni bites for my daughter thinking it would be like macaroni and cheese, but apparently they are like mini hot pockets. I ended up choosing the grilled cheese sandwich which is huge because it's served on Texas toast.
I had heard good things about the service and most of the staff appeared to be friendly when we first came in and were greeted and as we watched the service at other tables. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest, maybe because we weren't drinking. She brought all of our meals and then I asked where the kid's meal was and she said, "OH, it will just be a minute." It took at least five more minutes, so my guess is that she forgot to put the order in. She didn't really come back to check on us but was very attentive to the table next to us (they were drinking).
The food was good, but we were kind of disappointed in the service. I would be willing to go back and try again.
