My friend Bonnie organized a New York Taco Crawl based on Eric Asimov's review of some Taco joints maybe last year. Thanks to her, I've found my favorite taco place in the city. This looks like a crummy railroad architectured bodega from the outside & even when you step inside. Chips, beer, beef jerky, soda, whoa... All the way in the back, there's a little window, a chaulk board menu & a few seats. Out of that little window come some of the best Tacos you can eat. When I came back from California, I was depressed at not having decent Mexican food in NY... Man, you've may not even miss the Mission if you smack your lips on these babies. And cheap. My favorite is the beef tongue taco, but they have all the standard stuff, carnitas, chicken, fish, etc. And there is usually no one there. I'm so glad places like this exist.
