I realize that Target has a lot of very affordable merchandise on their shelves. I've also shopped here in the past. Unfortunately, Target has allowed its pharmacists the right to refuse emergency contraceptives to women.
According to a press release, Target pharmacists are required to fill all prescriptions except EC. Pharmacists can request another on-duty pharmacist to fill EC prescriptions if they have “sincerely held religious beliefs.” Customers cannot be denied their prescriptions, although pharmacists are not required to fill them. Emergency contraceptives need to be taken in a certain time period. What happens if the next pharmacy is too far away or the person is on their lunch break and because they are an hourly employee with no or little insurance, they can't afford to take any more time off? The scenarios are numerous.
Frankly, I will not support a business that takes such a stance. It is backwards, it is gender bias, and it is mere steps away from additional policies that allow other prescriptions to be denied to customers.
