This restaurant just steps from the California El (Blue Line - O'Hare) has been impressively renovated from its days as a bar. Now it serves a host of Mexican favorites in a clean setting whose interior is very pleasing to the eye. Friendly, speedy service and good solid food.
I'm picking some offbeat menu items as my favorites. I never come here without getting the Cafe Con Leche. It was advertised in neon by the front, so I figure it must have been good. Sure enough, it just melts in your mouth.
Also, I know this is fairly common, but I'm glad to see a place that serves pickled garden vegetables alongside the chips and salsa -- carrots, cauliflower, and jalapeños pickled with a bay leaf is a careful touch which is just what a good solid meal needs.
Great eats around the California Stop. Or, if you're not hungry, get a Cafe Con Leche to go, and go next door to Panaderia La Central and get a Guava Donut. Yes, a Guava Donut. You gotta love this neighborhood.
