I have been to most, if not all, the indian restaurants in the Raleigh area. This is a very good restaurant. I would not go out of my way to go there but...I would recommend it to...

YUMMY 1/11/2011

The food here is absolutely delicious if you order off the menu. The buffet is good but the food ordered from the menu is excellent. The service is extraordinary and the atmosphere is so relaxing and conducive to enjoying your food. It is one of my favorite restaurants. more

Best so food so far 3/15/2009

I order a Lamb Madras (not on menu) with coconut added and it is fantastic. My wife like the Lamb Curry. Friendly staff and consistent food. Pros: Best Lamb Madras Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

The best chicken curry in Raleigh 10/1/2008

I am from India and my staple entree at Indian restaurant is Chicken Curry with breads ( Naan or Paratha or Roti) and they have the best authentic curry in Raleigh. The breads and rice are excellent. I have only tried the buffet a few times and I like the fact they are one of the few Indian buffets with samosas on the buffet. Yes it is not a great location and all of you ""followers"" who are concerned about how many people are in the restaurant order samosas as an appetizer and Chicken Curry with Paratha as your entree-give me excellent food over ambience any day !! more

Not great 5/20/2008

A bit of a disappointment. more

The restaurant has the BEST food anywhere 7/12/2007

When my husband and I go here, we always end up doing the buffet rather than ordering off the menu because it gives us an opportunity to try different dishes. I never tried Indian food until I was an adult. I used to live in Dallas and New Orleans though, so I already loved spicy Mexican and Cajun food. I loved Indian food the first time I tried it, but after trying different Indian restaurants, we can't go any other place but here. We LOVE it! In fact, it is our favorite food anywhere. If you have never tried Indian food and you are afraid to try something new, but you're curious, start here. They have a buffet, so you can sample small amounts on your plate and decide which dishes are your favorite. Pretend you're in India while listening to the Indian music and enjoying the food. I know some people are afraid to try restaurants from other nationalities because they fear they will be the only Americans in there and there will be a language barrier. That's not the case at all here. Everyone speaks English and many American customers are there too. Try it. You'll love it too! Pros: Delicious food! more

Food not so great 6/9/2007

We went to Taj Mahal on a Saturday evening. The first sign of a bad restaurant is that it is pretty empty on a Saturday evening. The food was subpar, especially considering the price. The malai kofta was not cooked properly. The paneer pakoras were served cold and not very tasty. The dessert definitely didn't taste like it was made from scratch, it tasted like it came from a can. The rice was the best part - which says something about the rest of the food! I am Indian so I am picky about Indian food, but I must say this place was among some of the worst Indian restaurants in the area. If you want good Indian food I would suggest Azitra. Pros: Fast Seating, clean Cons: Food was terrible more

Ambiance matches strip mall location and food was just okay 12/10/2006

Ambiance matches strip mall location and food was just okay. Convenient location at Capitol and Calvary but location is tucked away next to grocery store. Pros: Buffett Cons: Ambience, emptiness more

Strip Mall Location, Strip Mall Flavor 11/5/2006

My friends and I do an ""Ethnic Dinner Night"" once a month. For Indian night, we picked Taj Mahal based upon Citysearch's rating. It's in Mini-City off of Capital and Calvary. The location is kinda crappy because it's in a strip mall. We've found other great places in strip malls, so it wasn't a big deal. They also have a buffet, which I recommend if you've never tried Indian food and would like a little bit of everything to try the flavors and find out what you like. It wasn't the greatest Indian food ever. It was actually kind of bland. For the strip mall location, it seemed to have strip mall flavor. Pros: Buffet allows you to sample different things, great service, friendly staff/hosts Cons: Average food, kinda pricy for what you get, strip mall location more

Excellent 6/5/2006

The food and service here are wonderful. The owners are personable and attentive, willing to give suggestions and seem like they really care. The food is flavorful, and if you like spicy they do that well too! Pros: Great food, Great service Cons: Far from my house! more

We love it 5/29/2006

For what it's worth, our family chooses Taj Mahal for very special family occassions. It's kid friendly, great food and great people. We can't get enough. The buffet is well stocked, fresh food, and well seasoned. Try the goat, lamb, or chicken with a nice red wine or a Kingfisher ... you can't go wrong. Pros: Great food, easy parking, fast seating Cons: strip mall location, a bit pricy more

The food is wonderful and is cooked just the way you want it. I have eaten in many different restaurants and this is one of the best. The staff is attentive and friendly. I also tried the buffet on an occasion and it was tasty also. Some of the dishes that I like from here are tandoori chicken, malai kofta, lamb rogen josh and saag paneer. There are many others but these are the ones that I have eaten here many times. Just go and try it. It will be worth your trip. Pros: fresh food, family restaurant, fast service more

I'm a believer! 6/9/2005

My boyfriend begged me to try Inidan food for months, but I was too stubborn. Of course, I finally gave in and now I am addicted. Taj Mahal has the best service and food! The owners are always helpful in food selections for new-comers. If you love indian food like i do, you have got to go to Taj Mahal. And for anyone new to this type of cuisine, I promise you will become a believer of great Indian food as well! Pros: Great Owners, Hot food more

Excellent food and service, poor ambiance 11/7/2004

The food was excellent, and varied. The manager was helpful with recommendations, and offered us free mulligatawy soup, even though we had ordered the buffet. The only drawback was the location/ambiance. Stuck between a beauty supply store and a food lion it was difficult to find, and inside was clean but impersonal. Pros: Food, Service, Selection Cons: , Ambiance more

More than I expected 5/26/2004

What can I say other than this was a very rewarding experience. The food was the best that I have had here in the Raleigh area. The service was given with a smile and the children were kept entertained. Try this place you are sure to like it. Pros: food, service, people more

I'm a fan 6/12/2003

of spicy food. This is the best Indian restaurant in Raleigh. I've been to all of them! The owner is wonderful and the food is always cooked to order, hot, and fresh. more

The best Indian food. Period. 12/31/2002

The aromas inside prepare you for the best Indian food anywhere. The staff is friendly and attentive and truely appreciate your presence. The food has the flavor and quality you would expect. Although a bit on the expensive side, all in all it's a good value and don't be surprised if the staff remembers you when you return! A rare and welcome touch, indeed. Pros: Service, staff, quality more

indian food is like a drug....YUUUUMMM 11/25/2002

I have been to most, if not all, the indian restaurants in the Raleigh area. This is a very good restaurant. I would not go out of my way to go there but...I would recommend it to my friends. I would even recommend it over one of the ssother restaurants in the area. They didn't make the food wimpy because it's in America. I get annoyed when Indian restaurants put less ther food. more
