evil owner 3/27/2012

What an awful experience! There is nothing worse than being a customer at a restaurant and being made to feel like they are doing you a favor by serving you. Im not a snob and am friendly and not demanding. They are just simply rude and the woman that runs the restaurant is satan. We gave them a second try because we can walk and we like wine but they are simply awful there. Food is fine but i would rather buy a bottle of wine at the store and make a peanut butter sandwich than give her a penny more

disapointing 2/6/2010

I have lived near Taberna de Haro for several years...and I had been so excited to try it. I was extremely let down. The food was ok....but I have had much better Spanish food. Several dishes were over salted, some overcooked. We were squeezed into a table next to the door....which was freezing in the January cold. In addition, the service was terrible. Our dishes were brought completely separate. Two of us had our entrees for about 20 minutes before the third received her meal. Also..the hostess/manager was very rude. I have been a waitress for many years, and to all the comments accusing reviewers of treating staff as ""servants,"" this was not the case. Just poor service. Pros: ok food Cons: service more

not authentic 2/12/2009

I was there once after I came back from Spain. I was totally disappointed in the tapas. We ordered a tuna dish expecting sashimi grade fish only to get tuna that appeared to come from a can. The white asparagus was from a freshly opened jar. They charge just as much as Dali and Toro but there is no comparison, The best feature of this restaurant is you can sit outside in the summer. I would never go back there again. Pros: outside dining in the summer Cons: food quality more

Best Restaurant in Boston 6/5/2008

This is my favorite restaurant in Boston. I have spent most of my life traveling to Spain, and find that Taberna de Haro is better than most Spanish restaurants in Spain. The dishes are simple. ""We are not creative here,"" once said Julio Haro, one of the founders of the restaurant, ""We just make the traditional dishes,"" and thank goodness someone does. Julio and Deborah Haro started the restaurant as a typical Madrid tavern, which means that it serves dishes from all over Spain. Everything here is good, but you would have a hard time going wrong with the specials, which range from game to fish to vegetarian dishes. Three dishes is a good start for two people. Then, if you have room, order the natilla, a Spanish custard, or the flan. Deborah, now the sole owner, travels to Spain every year, and discovers new wineries. She has an encyclopedic knowledge and a passion for Spanish wines, and she tries to impart that knowledge to her young staff. She also charges very reasonable prices for the wines. She once said that she doesn't believe that restaurants should charge a lot of money for wines they aren't to keep around for a long time, and most of the wines here are young. If you want to have great Spanish food and interesting wines from new wineries, this is the best place in the United States, far better than trendier places in Boston or Washington. If you're going from Thursday to Sunday, get there by 6:45 PM, or you'lll have a wait if you don't have a reservation. Then again, you could do a lot worse than wait at at the bar while Deborah prepares tapas for you, or offers you a few slices of Manchego cheese and suggests a sherry to go with that. Expect to spend about $50 a person. Pros: Food, wine, expert knowledge on the part of the owner Cons: Noise more

Suberb experience! 5/23/2008

I am shocked by the negative reviews for this wonderful find! The food was absolutely delicious. Service was polite and well paced. A fabulous experience!!!!!! Can't wait to go back... Pros: intimate more

not what it used to be (that is, AVOID IT) 5/18/2008

First of all, let me tell you I am from Madrid, Spain. I had gone to Taberna de Haro several times a couple of years ago, and really liked the genuinely Spanish feel and taste of it. Pros: cheap compared to other Spanish tapas places in Boston area Cons: awful food, bad service more

Cozy Atmosphere, Amazing Wine, and Tasty Dishes 12/3/2007

I am surprised by the number of negative posts regarding the wait staff at Taberna because this was not the case in any of my three visits there thus far. My fiance and I first ate at Taberna on a special occasion, where I had a bottle of wine so delightful that I had to fish around in my purse for pen and paper to write the brand down (for the life of me, I can't find it anywhere, either)! The portions are perfect for a couple - we normally order 2 or 3 dishes and that is more than enough to feed us both. The food is very good - though I have no basis for ""authenticity"" comparison. We always order the olive plate which has four or five different varieties of olives to choose from. Also wonderful is the marinated mushroom dish. I find the cheese plate to be overpriced in comparison to what is served, though the cheeses represented are very different and delicious. Finally, I have had nothing but wonderful service in my visits to Taberna. While I'm sure that waitstaff varies from season to season, I have always had attentive, kind, and educated people serving our table. Once, the chef even personally delivered one of our dishes to apologize for it not being ready earlier. I can't say enough about the overall experience. It's truly a fun place to dine! Pros: Extensive Wine List, Cozy Atmosphere Cons: Can get loud when very busy. more

Rude staff and dirty tables! 9/6/2007

We didn't even stay for dinner. The waitstaff and management treated us horribly and were pressuring us into ordering quickly or else move! The waitstaff was so annoyed (visibly) that we were conversing before ordering, that she sent the manager over to ask us to give up our table and move indoors. She was so focused on the tip money she felt she would lose that she never ordered our appetizer. NEVER have I been treated like this on a special occasion. The tables were filthy and we left to have a fantastic dinner elsewhere. They only apologized as we were out the door and angry. Pros: good wine list Cons: horrible service, dirty more

Worst dining experience ever! 7/20/2007

We love Spain, we love Spanish food, we love Spanish wine. We want to love this restaurant, but the attitute of some of the waitresses is continously so unbearable, that we just cannot go there anymore. Our last dining experience there was so awful that we simply have to share it: we entered the place and we felt like offenders when we asked for a table outside. We were told without a smile, that we have to consume for 20$ each. Once we sat down we ordered a sangria. The sangria tasted bad and flat. When we asked about the unusual and flat taste, the waitress told us, that she knew that already, because they had run out of some ingredients and they have just put in different stuff like ginger ale. When I complained why she did not tell us that when she brought the drink in the first place, she got upset and started yelling at me in front of all the other tables. She did not serve us at all, she just put our plates at the other end of the table and we were supposed to help ourselves. We were not able to order more food or drinks or bread. At the end she brought the check and had already added 18% tip for our party of two. The food was greasy and average as usual, but the service was a really a disgrace. We watched several people leaving early this evening because of the rudeness. In the future we will have to go to Toro although we live close to the Taberna de Haro. Pros: Wine list Cons: Service, service, attitude more

worst tapas ever! 7/15/2007

This restaurant has the worst tapas ever! The food was tasteless (except for the garlic) and the presentation was horrific! Pros: service Cons: food more

Most flavorless food ever. 4/27/2007

I am really REALLY confused by the food reviews. I went with a friend from Spain, and it was embarassing! This was the most flavorless food I have ever had! The gambas had no garlic, the asparagus was bitter, and the pinchos (completely unauthentic) were uninspired. This is the ONLY time we have had a few dishes and actually left because it was so bad (and then went and finished dinner elsewhere!) It is unfortunate because our service was great, and the wine list was lengthy and amazing. Go for a glass of wine at the bar, but for food stick with Dali or even Tasca. Pros: great wine list, friendly waiter Cons: completely unpalatable food (and overpriced at that!) more

Great authentic tapas 4/9/2007

Had a great time here last summer, sat at an outside table, the owner came out and recommended us a wine that we were trying to find from Spain, having lived in Spain I think these tapas are very authentic (and i was so excited that they have ensaladilla rusa unlike other tapas rest. in area), yes more expensive than Spain but so are all the tapas places in Boston area. overall great wine, great tapas, great service, great experience! Pros: outside seating, great wine list, authentic more

Very Good food and very nice staff 3/2/2007

First I completely disagree with the previous post that the waitstaff here is rude. I' ve been eating here for years and have never experienced or seen anything remotely close to rudeness. If anything the staff is some of the nicest in all of Boston. Pros: Wine list, food, service more

Rude waitstaff outweighs tasty kitchen 1/30/2007

i was so excited to try this restaurant after reading the overall positive reviews. while i agree the food is good & ambience nice, the waitstaff put a damper on our evening. they did not seat my party of 3 at an empty table when they could have which forced us to wait unncessarily. secondly, when we chose not to order alcohol, the waitress actually scowled at us, leaving us feeling uncomfortable and awkward. then when i asked a clarification to an explanation on the menu (""what does crashed eggs mean?""), her response was a rude (""it means they are all crashed together""), for me that translation was not helpful.. and finally, she didn't even bother to tell us the specials. we had to ask her about a dish we saw pass by and her response was ""it's one of our specials."" we paused assuming she'd tell us the rest but she stared at us blankely. we then had to ask specifically ""could you tell us the specials?"" while i recognize that having a limited number of waitstaff can make things stressed, there is no need to scowl, huff, be sarcastic or rude to customers. we won't bother going back b/c it just isn't worth it. Pros: food, ambience Cons: waitress waitress waitress more

Great Waitstaff 10/6/2006

First, let me say that I find this restaurant to have the best tapas in all of boston. There is nothing on the menu that isn't delicious. The wine list is superb and the atmosphere is reminiscent of a small tapas bar in spain. Pros: Food, wine list, staff more

Good food, not worth the mistreatment by the waitstaff 10/3/2006

We've been to Taberna a couple of times, and the tapas are very tasty; appropriately sized without making you feel stuffed. Good sangria, too. However, the waitstaff was atrocious. We asked to sit out on the patio, and the waitress asked accusingly if we actually intended to order dinner. When we answered that we did, she threw some menus on a nearby table and stalked off. After ordering four tapas and some wine to start, our waitress (who was different from the one who seated us and actually nice) told the waitress who seated us what we ordered, and this horrible woman came out and began practically yelling at us. She LOUDLY informed us that there was a 20$ minimum per person, and that if we didn't intend to order more food or wine, then we had to move inside, because there were customers waiting to take our spots who apparently looked more willing to spend money, and therefore more worth this woman's time. We were humiliated and offended. Afterwards, we couldn't even enjoy the food, much less the atmosphere, as the rest of the patio had overheard our very public scolding and stared at us for the remainder of our meal. We will never, NEVER go to Taberna again. more

Not to be missed 9/15/2006

It's been a long long time since my friends and I have had such a great dinner. Everything about the experience was fabulous from the food to the wine to the service to the whole atmosphere. Regarding the food, it was simply delicious. We shared about 9 plates including the shrimp, spinich, lamb chops, artichokes, 5 cheeses, croquetes, mussels, and eggplant, and we couldn't decide which one was better. The wine list is great. They have about 150 spanish wines at extremely reasonable prices. THe service fantastic. Our waitress was easy-going, fun, knowledgable, very professional and most of all she didn't rush us even though there was a wait. We will definetely be going back very soon. This place rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: Food, service, value Cons: nothing more

Good, not great, tapas 9/8/2006

While the menu is nicely different than the average tapas restaurant, the rushed, uninformed servers and high prices will keep us from going back anytime soon. The restaurant has the ambiance of a small, neighborhood joint, and you expect friendly servers/hosts upon walking in, but we were seated in a rush and the menus thrust in our hands. The waitress had no knowledge of the wines and could not answer our questions (and for a tapas restaurant they have a nice wine list) nor did she offer to check with anyone to get answers. The sangria is overpriced at $28 dollar for small jug; glasses are $7 a piece, and a carafe serves ~4 glasses. Where's the deal? The tapas themselves were good, but not excellent. We had to ask for aioli with our calamari, and it was more mayonnaise than antything - no garlic bite to it. The pieces of potato in the potatas bravas were nicely crisped, but overly large - and there wasn't enough sauce with them. We had a few other tapas, the most memorable a tasty black sausage sandwich with roasted red pepper. All in all, however, the food was okay, but the experience was poor. more

Truly good food 8/24/2006

The best tapas in all of boston is right here in this charming little family owned restaurant. Each time I've come the food has been spectacular. I especially recommend the shrimp, lamb skewers, croquetes, cold seafood salad, artichokes, and pisto. The wine list is vast, but the descriptions are well done and true to the actual bottle. I STRONGLY DISAGREE with the previous review that the staff is nasty or should find other jobs. This place has some of the nicest, most knowledgable and accomadating staff in Boston. They don't rush you to order or to leave, and i suggest not mistaking busyness for rudeness. THis place IS busy, but fun. Go and enjoy! Pros: great food, fun staff, good price more

Hot,hot hot 8/22/2006

Found this restaurant to be a little over-rated after reading all the reviews. You could never spend $80 on tapas for two in Spain. The heat in the overcrouded room was somewhat unbearable. The owners were charming but the waitstaff should consider a career change. It was however much better than Toro, but my favorite tapas place is Tasca which is romantic, has parking and is a lot less expensive. Pros: Outdoor seating Cons: Stuffy inside, crouded and hot more
