2010 Fall Dining Guide 10/16/2010

By Tom Sietsema Sunday, October 17, 2010 The Tabard Inn and I go back decades, but I still feel a flutter in my chest whenever I see its menu. So many enticements! I want to order one of each when the choices include a fat soft-shell crab garnished with juicy grapefruit and napped with a passion-fruit-accented brown butter sauce; seared scallops accompanied by ricotta-filled squash blossoms and a nest of squid-ink pasta jazzed up with preserved lemon; and a mixed grill that lets me savor plump quail, juicy duck sausages and roseate lamb chops, along with haricots verts cooked just right. The nut-crusted halibut might be dry, but you have to applaud the peach relish and plantain chips the fish shows up with. Named after the lodging place in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," the business dates to 1922, but the kitchen, under executive chef Paul Pelt, is very much of the moment. Packaged in a low ceiling and black-and-while tile floor, the main dining room proves cramped and clattery. I prefer the cozier space upstairs or, better yet, the enclosed garden if the weather allows. The inn's address, on a quiet, tree-lined street near Dupont Circle, gives it the air of a well-kept secret. The occupied couches in the firelit lounge tell you otherwise: You'd better have a reservation. more

There's more fun inside... 7/30/2010

The Tabard Inn is one of my favorite spots for a drink with friends. It's perfect all year round. The inside with its Persian rugs, leather sofas and chairs and fireplaces feels like a well-appointed, well-loved living room. Couches arranged to face one another make great conversation spots to catch up. I wouldn't try bringing a group of more than 6-8, since it is an older rowhouse and space is tight, but it's great for small groups. The cheese plate and a few glasses of wine are just right. The outside patio's parachute shade is one of my favorite quaint DC restaurant details, bar none. I would go there purely for the pleasure of sitting in their garden patio for a few hours. That and, of course, the doughnuts. Pros: Cozy fireplace, sweet parachute roof outside Cons: Reservations can be tough more

Still worth a visit 5/31/2010

I hadn't been to the Tabard Inn in a while but a friend and I decided to have lunch there today. The food and service were both excellent and the portions more than ample. And reasonably priced for what we had and how well we were treated. Definitely worth a return visit soon. more

Tucked away in this historic Inn near Dupont Circle this quaint and cozy hotel restaurant has some of the most decadent brunch items in the city. Having been several times, I've never been disappointed. The menu changes some of the items seasonally, but a mainstay is the French Toast. Forget bad memories of soggy bread drowned in watery syrup - the French Toast at Tabard Inn is the best I've ever had. If you're more in the mood for a traditional omelet, you won't be disappointed either since those are fantastic as well. And of course, make sure you order a round of donuts for your table. They will arrive warm and soft, right out of the oven, and you'll consider breaking all your diet rules for second helpings - they're that good. There is often a wait on the weekends, so book your reservation ahead of time. Pros: Everything Cons: Next to nothing more

Best Brunch on the Planet 2/23/2010

Tabard Inn's dinner may be expensive, but the brunch is superb value. Good luck trying to figure out what to order, because everything ALWAYS sounds good. Don't worry you won't feel cheated, as everything is tasty. The donuts are a must try and the hanger steak is about as good as they come. Aside from brunch, drinks by the fireplace are a good time in the winter. They have a very respectable beer selection. Pros: homemade donuts Cons: often need a reservation more

Brunch, brunch, brunch (and Doughnuts!) 1/18/2010

I'm constantly trying to find awesome brunch places in the city....what can I say, I love breakfast food! Tabard Inn definitely fits the bill. Truly amazing food (I had the french toast) is the norm here, with excellent breakfast cocktails (my favorite is the mimosa), which I recommend drinking while waiting for a seat in the dining area, as it can be busy on the weekend. Don't be deterred by the wait though - it is worth it...instead, revel in the cozy living room waiting area and take in the atmosphere with friends or family. Also, don't miss out on the freshly baked doughnuts - they are a treat! Friendly and enthusiastic servers top off the experience. Pros: Best brunch around, fresh baked doughnuts Cons: There can be a wait - but it is worth it! more
