It makes me really sad to give Sweet Mandy B's only two stars, because I've heard such great things. I was so excited to try the whoopie pie and caramel pecan clusters for the fir...

Not as good as we thought 8/12/2006

On a recent visit, we got cupcakes and brownies, which were adequate, but not as good as I expected, given the bakery's reputation. I had seen it on a couple of best of Chicago lists. Earlier this week, my wife and sister in law got a whoopie pie, which is cake sandwiched around whipped cream. it was too sweet and not very tasty. They ended up getting rid of it. What they have is geared toward a younger crowd, which is understandable because they are located near DePaul. However, we won't be going back. more

Adding to the 19 lbs of sugar Americans eat per year 5/19/2006

Great lattes that go well with the chocolate chip and oat with walnut cookies. The prices are better than most bakeries and there's something for every sweet tooth: chocolate, caramel, sweets, sours, etc. Cakes made to order in many sizes/styles--perfect for a unique birthday. They range from $25-60 or more. Obviously, this place is busy on the weekends, but the mornings see a steady stream of people too. more

Best cake anywhere! 3/30/2006

Sweet Mandy B's is an absolutely must-try in Chicago. They carry all sorts of sweets, like cookies, brownies, and cakes, plus coffee, pop, and milk. Seating is kind of limited but very cute, and if you go on a weekend be prepared to wait in line! My absolute favorite items are their cakes (white cake with white icing, or chocolate cake with chocolate icing)... They are moist, sweet, and the icing is fantastic. Also try the homemade Whoopie pies... they are delicious! (But I believe they sell out quickly.) They are a bit expensive.... a slice of cake is around $3... but it is worth it! more

Coffee and a roll 3/8/2006

Sweet Mandy B's redefines this AM classic. The coffee is Intelligentsia and the rolls (cookies, cupcakes, scones, too) are gooey soft and delicious. The lattes here are well-made too with just the right amount of foaminess. While on the pricey side, the quality makes up for it. While steady, this place is also not crowded on weekday mornings between 8 and 9 (I'm not sure what it's like after 9). On weekends you may experience larger crowds, especially in warmer months. more

Old Fashioned Bakery with Hip Outlook 10/10/2005

A friend recently brought me a box of baked goodies from Sweet Mandy B's, and I couldn't have been more delighted. This is a place where they have the deserts your mom (or grandma) used to make. There's a few tables inside, too, if you want to sit and have a cuppa joe and some delicious treat. The true sign of great bakery to me is good cake/cupcake frosting, and there's is the best. Also good are the spice cookies with frosting. Whatever your favorite, you are sure to find some real treats here! Don't miss it. more

Best Cupcakes in Chicago 10/7/2005

We no longer live in Chicago and boy do we miss Sweet Mandy B's cupcakes. They are simply the best in the city and worth a side trip if you're anywhere on the North Side. Delicious. more

Sugary Goodness 8/13/2005

If you have a sweet tooth, look no further than Sweet Mandy B's! It's is a welcome addition to a town dominated by German and Polish bakeries. Particularly noteworthy are their cupcakes, which many count among the top in the city. (Other great ones can also be found at Fox & Obel and Southport Grocery & Cafe.) Their chocolate-topped peanut butter rice krispy treaties are also amazing. (In fact, the only thing I've ever tried that I haven't liked are the red velvet cupcakes.) The only downside to Sweet Mandy B's is that it isn't cheap. If you buy three or four cupcakes and a rice krispy treat, you'll spend close to $15. more
