Get the lamb samosas 9/18/2010

Pretty good Indian food. Also we dug the saag paneer and the tamarind sauce. Nice service as expected at an Indian place, and of course the King Fishers more

Buttery Times! 8/7/2008

You may be a butter hog or you may be a butter snob. One thing to note is that the flavor of butter is mighty distinct in the dishes. You can go on butter patrol or you can add some butter to your fat roll. I chose the latter. The food was scrumptious and indulgent.\r \r I dined here in a party of 10 and the experience was superb! The service was excellent. This is a great place to celebrate milestones, such as your husband's parole; the day you dumped your cheating ex; Athiest Day; or even your birthday. I will certainly dine here again. more

delicious indian food 7/31/2008

Swagat is one of my favorite places for Indian food. The food is so fresh and delicious, and the people who work there are friendly and welcoming. I feel like I'm being welcomed into someone's home. I have only had the vegetarian food there and the dal (and all the specialties) is really, really good - but my date got some Tandoori mix the other day and it smelled unbelievable. He loved it - so meat eaters should try it. The staff always has great recommendations. Sometimes it's good to ask for extra spice because they tend to play it safe. I have been to many of the Indian restaurants in the city - down on 6th street and up in Curry Hill, but I still place Swagat up at the top of my list. Oh, and they have a special on weekends or lunch - some 13.95 for a full meal with all the extras that add up, like naan and raita and such...check it out. Pros: fresh, genuine food, friendly service, good prices Cons: not always spicy enough, ask for extra more

Best Indian Food in Town 3/12/2008

Charming ambience. Food was excellent ,as well as the service. Good tasty indian cuisine. My vegetarian friend and I were quite pleased with the menu choices. Highly recommended. more

Awful service 12/18/2007

I placed an order for delivery and was treated terribly. After waiting 40 minutes for my food, I called to check that it was still on its way. They assured me the delivery guy would be there in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later the delivery guy did call, but when I went downstairs to pick up the food he wasn't there. I tried calling him back to check his address but he hung up on me. I finally called the restaurant back, but they were so rude that I ended up canceling my order. Don't order from here. There are other places that will treat you like they actually care about their customers. more

Great food with service in a cozy setting 5/12/2007

Small cozy restaurant on the upper west side, by the museum of natural history. Excellent service and food. The staff are very attentive and accommodate to your taste. The Peshwari naan melts in your mouth. The spices on the curry dishes are great - beware when you order extra spicy.....its spicy - have some yogurt, bread or mild around you. My boyfriend, who is Indian was couldn't even handle the spice. It's worth a trip uptown - the unforgotten area in the city. Pros: Great food and service in a cozy restuarant Cons: Parking more

Great value 3/5/2007

While it certainly isn't the most luxurious restaurant in NYC, my significant other and I found the food, service and atmosphere all to be well- above average for the price range. The space is tiny, but decorated tastefully enough with exposed brick walls and ivory linens. The three gentlemen working the front of the house all seemed to work together harmoniously, and the food, while not the greatest Indian I've ever experienced, was delicious, well seasoned, and served hot. (I hate crappy Indian food buffets with lukewarm food!) more

Good Indian food.. 10/23/2006

I am a fan of Indian food and going to this place doesn't change that. Small but nice place. Nice decor although nothing to brag about. Really good service and of course amazing food. Affordable prices. Had appetizer, drinks, and main course and compare to the rest of NYC this place was inexpensive. Nice for dates. more

Terrible Service! 6/4/2006

My first and last visit! Walked in on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers in the restaurant. Although, there were four waiters and a manager working, we were ignored, rushed to order and treated like a nuisance. The icing on the cake was having a mistake on our bill and then having the manager argue out loud with me about a side order of Nan bread! I was outraged, not about the couple of dollars, but on the horrible service. Would not recommend to anyone! Pros: food was average Cons: Terrible service more

Bad Food, Horrible Service. 5/18/2006

Ordered a vegetarian dish which is traditionally not very spicy. When I wanted to exchange it after taking one bite and realizing that it was very hot, management refused to exchange the dish saying, ""What do you want me to do? Serve it to someone else?"" Incredible. Absolutely no customer service. I would never go back again/ more

Go for brunch! 3 courses for the price of one! Enough food for 2 meals! Its amazing! I love this place! more

If you like inexpensive bland food... 8/27/2005

My girlfriend and I have been here twice, we had the same experience on both occasions. We had the weekend brunch special, which is a great value. The appetizers were very good, but the chicken entrees (Vindaloo, Kurma, Manglorean, etc.) were rather tasteless. The Tandor entree might be worth trying. Pros: Price, Friendly Staff Cons: Bland Entrees more

Best indian in the city 7/31/2005

We frequent swagat, as it is consistently delicious!! The staff and management are excellent. Our favorites are their Tikka Masala and Naan. I wholeheartedly recommend swagat, you WILL get addicted! Pros: Service, Food, Atmosphere more

yummy food 5/23/2005

chicken makhani, vegetable makhani, peshawri nan alone make it a worthwhile trip to this small restaurant more

Great!!! 4/25/2005

This is a small, cozy restaurant. The food was great!!! Mango curry (i forgot its indian name on the menu) is a must and their tanduri, appetizers and deserts were also great. Service was really friendly and atmosphere was amiable. I don't know how the others would think about this place but I will definitely want to recommend this place to my friends! more

Surprising Delicious 3/10/2005

Expecting the typical heavy laden sauced, undistinguishable tasting Indian food. Friend recommended to try the restaurant. We were surprised to find clean tasting, flavorful dishes. Each ingredient could be tasted, not masked. The place for Indian on the UWS for us. Pros: Flavorful food more

Cozy and Friendly 11/9/2004

We love this restaurant, not just because of the flavorful food, but the employees are charming and kind. The atmosphere is cozy and a bit lacking in decor, but it is, in a sense, romantic. Great food. more

Best Indian on UWS 11/2/2004

This place is fabulous -- the best Indian on the upper west side. The food is delicious! And the service is excellent. We like the atmosphere, very quiet and relaxed. Definitely try this nice little Indian restaurant -- you will not regret it! Pros: Delicious, Reasonably Priced, Great Service more

Enjoyable, Warm Dining Experience 6/19/2004

My mother and I had a wonderful lunch at Swagat a couple of months ago. At that time it was pretty new to the neighborhood. The menu was fairly extensive for a small place, and the food was delicious; but the warm and helpful service definitely set it apart from other restaurants. I will definitely be back. Pros: Good value, Warm, helpful service, Good, fresh food more

Swagat ""The New Indian Restaurant"" 3/12/2004

Swagat is a small little Indian Restaurant in the middle of a bug block, just wating there for someone to come in and eat its great food. I happened to pass by and saw this restaurant and wanted to check it out. The first time I went it I was greeted with pleasure and enjoyed my time. They had great appetizers. My favorite was Shrimp Pandochery. It had a great sauce which made me order another dish. The chicken entree I ordered was Chicken Darampur, it was the best Indian chicken dish I had ever eaten. Maybe it was the chef or other restaurants did not make anything like this. And for desert I had was an Indian Ice-Cream called Kulfi. It was very nice. I hope more people go there and enjoy the great meals they serve with excellent service. I will go again and try more dishes. Pros: Great Food, Service more
