Best

over the past year and a half my husband and i have spent a great deal of time at the restraunt downtown and have NO bad experiances. there was a particular manager who might i ad...

Worst

This review is for BOTH locations (1604 & IH-10). Pros: Different look and test for serving sushi Cons: Loud, not very clean, spotty service

1st time to ever go - will NEVER go to this location AGAIN. 6/1/2011

I am a Sushi Zushi fiend. I get the same thing every time....crawfish dynamite (an appetizer). I came into this location (alone), was invited to sit at the bar and ordered a drink. I ordered my crawfish dynamite, and ONLY that....after 20 minutes I was wondering where it could be....they were not full (this was on a Sunday at 6:30)....nor were they even close to being on a wait. After 30 minutes, the manager and bartender ""noticed"" I hadn't gotten my ONE appetizer that takes all of 3 minutes to make. The bartender told me they were a little backed up and that it would be out in a minute. After 45 minutes, it finally came and the manager said he would take it off my bill. I was going to order more, but this experience completely ruined my night. I felt completely neglected (even though I was sitting right in front of them, and was the ONLY person at the bar) AND he still charged me for the appetizer, not the drink, did not try to make the situation better and certainly did not try to invite me back. It was the worst SZ experience I have ever had. I will NEVER come back to this location. EVER. more

Delicious as far as I know 11/22/2010

I often judge a place based on how delicious their salmon skin rolls are... They were delicious, I haven't expanded beyond their sushi or sashimi, so I am wouldn't be a good judge of that. But the food that I have eaten there has been yummy! nothing I had smelt like raw sewage! O.o! more

Run away from this place! 2/16/2010

Went here for dinner and was served expired food that smelled of sewage! When I brought it to the servers attention he validated their intention by saying the vendor hadn't been there in several days!!! This guy then tried to charge me for it, not to mention the worst service I have ever recieved at a dining established by a server with 2 year tenure... This place is gross- Pros: for those that like expired, not edible food!!!! Cons: Bad service, bad food! more

wonderful sushi experiance 5/6/2009

over the past year and a half my husband and i have spent a great deal of time at the restraunt downtown and have NO bad experiances. there was a particular manager who might i ad is is no longer there that made the experiance a little less enjoyable but never as terrible as written by some of the other commentators. I'm sorry to say it folks but never have your expectations set too high at ANY restraunt, you're going to get your heart broken. Also the attitude that you project is going to affect the service you get, no one wants to wait on a snotty know-it all...sorry it had to be said, i'm a waitress. Also, in coming to a southern state in search of quality sushi, please realize there are going to be ingredients supplemented to suit the locals, not all business is strictly sushi experts. Anyways! The restraunt is fantastic. The servers are hospitable, funny, and attentive. the back of the house crew is prompt, and although not "":authentic"" japanese chefs at the downtown location, they are incredible weilding a knife of that proportion with such skill and training, and if you're still not satisfied have a chat with either of the managers and i promise you'll have a smile on your face by the time you walk out of the door. Thank you for your time folks, enjoy the wonders of downtown SA! Pros: food, service, atmosphere Cons: i'm at a loss more

Absolute Horrible Service 4/2/2009

My friends and i came to San Antonio for a vacation, we asked our hotel staff what's a good sushi restaurant around here and she recommended Sushi Zushi. So we came here to give it a try. First walked in, we didnt know if we were suppose to seat ourselves or wait?...looked around if there are any host or hostess...none...waited for like a minute then we just sat ourselves.. The Menu was HUGE..there was a lot of sushi that wasn't much different from each other.. When we got our food it was mediocre...nothing great about it...my friend didnt get his food yet...and everyone else did...and i asked our server where is his food...he said it's coming right now...all my friend order was a sashimi assortment..which should be the easiest and fastest to come out...he waited another 10 minute for it..then it FINALLY came out. My other friends and i already finished our food when his food just came out. And on top of that, he got my other friend order wrong..but she said it's okay. It was a horrible experience...we just paid the bill and hurriedly left the place. Never are we going back there again. Pros: nice decor Cons: bad service, sushi were mediocre more

Sushi Zushi is certainly not for the connoisseur. 3/2/2009

If you enjoy traditional Japanese ambiance and affair this is certainly NOT the establishment for you. Pros: Hopefully there are better Japanese restaurants in San Antonio. Cons: Sushi Menu and Dinner Menu Smashed together in one, poor ambiance, rude staff, soggy noodles. Dry Rice. more

OVERRATED - Average Sushi and TERRIBLE SERVICE 5/13/2008

I love sushi and I love to try new places all the time. I've lived in Austin and Houston, and I've always wished that San Antonio had more sushi offerings. I went to Sushi Zushi expecting similar quality to some of the upscale places I've tried. The best thing about my trip was probably the hostess as she was the only one who paid attention to our party. After being seated, we waited 15 minutes for WATER and another 15 minutes for our waitress to finally show up. I almost got up and left because the restaurant was relatively empty. The waitress acted as if we were wasting HER time and did not even know anything about the menu. Several other waiters and waitresses passed by and noticed us just sitting there and didn't bother to ask if we'd been helped. Regardless, we ordered anyway because we felt like we owed it to the time we spent waiting. When the sushi was brought out, I was terribly disappointed. At their price point, I expected fresher fish and better quality preparation. The eel was overcooked, and the salmon sashimi tasted old. While Sushi Zushi seems like a trendy sushi spot, it definitely did NOT meet my expectations. Pros: None worthy of writing down Cons: Service, overpriced, quality more

Other than TAO in Vegas, the ONLY place I ever eat Sushi! 12/19/2007

I've tried a variety of different Sushi restaurants here in San Antonio, all unsavory - But the first time I went to Sushi Zushi on E. Basse, I fell inlove. The service is wonderful, waiters and waitresses are very friendly, polite and attentive. I'm only a fan of Maki-Zushi, so it's rare the time that I order otherwise - The LIR Roll, Spurs Roll, Las Vegas Roll, Spicy Salmon/Tuna/Crab Rolls - MY FAVORITES, among others. It is ALWAYS clean, bathrooms are spotless. I don't know where the critics that previously submitted their reviews ate at, but it was definetly not the one on E. Basse. I highly recommend Sushi Zushi on E. Basse - It has now become my FAVORITE restaurant in San Antonio! Pros: Delicious food, wonderful service - worth every penny! more

avoid th is place! 9/18/2007

Horrible sushi and horrible serivce!!! The fish is POOR QUALITY, food that was supposed to be hot was really cold, greasy and flavorless. The waiter (Mike) clearly did not know ANYTHING about the food he was 'serving' and is either REALLY stupid or had an attitude. This dump also charges the same prices for sushi that you would pay in a quality sushi restaurant in SanFrancisco Pros: desperately needs new management or to close down more

Do not take a ""sushi virgin"" here! 7/1/2007

My fiance and I are self-proclaimed sushi experts-no thanks to Sushi Zushi. This was the place I tried sushi for the 1st time 4 years ago, and I thought I hated sushi. They use too much cream cheese in the rolls, the fish freshness is sketchy, and it is far from authentic. If you want truly amazing sushi, go to Yokonyu downtown or, for a little less money, go to Koi Kawa on Broadway. Pros: There are other sushi restaurants in town Cons: There is more than one location more

Lousy excuse for Japanese food. 11/15/2006

Japanese food is difficult to find in San Antonio, and Sushi Zushi isn't the place to try. I've been visiting Japan for the past 12 years, and I've never eaten food this bad in all my travels. This restaurant doesn't even use the right variety of rice. Their tempura is disgraceful. To top it off, it's expensive. Save your money and your tastebuds. Cons: Expensive, tasteless. more

avoid at all cost 9/10/2006

Sushi Zushi DENIED that it occurred and became unresponsive, I will never eat there again!!!! Not to mention the food was mediocre at best. Has anyone else had trouble with food poi son ing there at sushi zushi at ANY of thier branches??? Pros: Good drinks Cons: it might k ill you. more

No authentic Japanese food, but a good place for sushi beginners 9/3/2006

Sadly but true, i agree w/ previous review of Sushi Zushi not being authentic to the true Japanese sushi style. For those of you who got a chance to taste authenticy Japanese udon, or ramen, plz don't waste ur money order their udon, because they are Sweet! yuck >""< Pros: Good for sushi starters Cons: NOT an authentic Japanese Food. more

Pleasant Surprise+life extended-read reviews hehe 5/26/2006

Expectations were not high, since it was in a strip mall, but it was very clean, modern decor and great ambience. We tried 6 different rolls, appetizers and sake and everything was good. Try the Acapulco Roll, mackerel nigiri & especially the Q-Roll, which our server suggested. The Q-Roll was by far one of the best rolls we have ever had! Extensive menu and great service. I've had sushi in San Francisco, NY & other cities with great sushi & this was comparable. If I lived in San Antonio, I would definitely come back here, at least to get the Q Roll! Expensive, but if quality is important to you, it is a fantastic choice. Pros: Great quality & fresh, ambience, unique rolls &service Cons: expensive more

Insult to Japanese Food 10/13/2005

I have never had worse Japanese food than Sushi Zushi. I could not finish my food. Maybe I am spoiled because I lived in Japan for three years. I would not recommend this place if you want authentic Japanese food. Cons: expensive, Americanized more

YUM SUSHI! 8/16/2005

Sushi Zushi is a good place to eat sushi. The atmosphere is casual and accepting of all types. The selection of the rolls was above and beyond what I would expect from any sushi restaurant. This was my first experience of eating sushi in San Antonio and I definitely will be back. Pros: Friendly, Tasty, Attentive more

Simply the Best 9/4/2004

At Sushi Zushi you'll find sushi unlike any you've ever had. The mix of a Mexican touch to this wonderfully diverse food makes this restaurant the best. Try the chiles torreados, grilled green chiles served in Sushi Zushi's special joy sauce. You can put it on any item on the menu and it tasts wonderfull with a little kick. The presentation of the food along with the service is also excellent. You can mke reservations anytime and it's family friendly too. more
