After hearing rave reviews about Sushi Masa, my mom, sister, husband and I decided to give it a whirl while I was home visiting in February. My husband and I are huge sushi fans and enjoy it once a week on average. Thus, please don't take this lightly when I say it: this is the WORST restaurant experience I have had in my life! We sat down, were served beverages and then placed our straight forward order.
New customers were seated, placed orders and were served. Twenty, then forty minutes passed. Meanwhile, our waters were empty, stomachs were growling, and patience was running out FAST. Over AN HOUR had passed since we'd last seen our waitress! At that point two kind ladies dining at the table adjacent to us mentioned to her waitress that we still hadn't been served. She stopped at our table and snarkily stated that our food was coming. I inquired as to what was causing the delay, to which she retorted that "we're a small establishment," and "what you ordered takes a while to cook". Her attitude was grotesquely off-putting, not to mention we hadn't ordered a single thing that required cooking. Several minutes later, our original waitress returned to our table and filled our water glasses lazily and said nothing. No apology. Not a word. Where on earth had she been? My husband couldn't wait any longer and had to dash out the door to meet friends on an empty stomach. When the sushi was finally thrown on our table, it was respectable and entirely edible, though the presentation was far less than flattering. We also had to request chopsticks, since they weren't already on the table or delivered with the food. When the bill (which we had to ask for twice, and was forgotten twice) finally made it to our table, there was no discount for our troubles.
For the first time in any of our lives, we left zeros on the tip line. Tips are earned, and waitstaff are wise to never forget that fact! The keystone to any business is SERVICE, and without it, Sushi Masa is most certainly doomed. I BEG you, spend your money elsewhere!
