Avoid at all costs 8/25/2008

Doesn't surprise me it is closed. This had to be my worst steakhouse experience ever! As another review stated, restaurant said they had only 8:30 res when the entire place was vacant at 7. Cons: everything more

beautiful but dull 11/24/2006

They 'could only fit us in at 7' was what we were told. We arrived to find we were the single only table in the entire place that was full......the whole place was empty. Very annoyed they woudn't work with us for an 8:30 reservation as we had requested (and the place was still only 1/2 full at that time). Had heard great things about the food, but was very disappointed. Biggest mistake was the macaroni and cheese...should be fool proof, but they made it with large amounts of rosemary that left it tasting like medicine. There were four of us there, and none of us could eat it. The other items were decent, but there wasn't one thing that left us wanting more. Pros: beautiful restaurant Cons: food was mediocre more

Nice Starter for a Big Night 11/13/2006

Sterling is a nice place if you are looking to start the evening off with a good meal, followed by dancing & drinking. The steakhouse is connected to the current club ""Cabanna Club."" The food is very good, the pricing is expensive and the service is alright. For all of you that don't have the connections to get into the club, the restaurant is a nice way to get in the door (and enjoy good food) instead of just waiting in line and paying a hefty cover charge. When you get a table, look out for your arrival time. Fashionably late doesn't work, and if you show up over 10 minutes late, they'll cancel your reservation. Ps. The guy at the door is a real four letter word ""face"", but the food is worth his temporarily inflated ego.\r \r \r Cheers -\r \r Red Butler\r (Personal Assistant & Concierge Memberships)\r vvvvvv:RedButler:com more

Expect offensive, un-fine service 9/8/2006

First, the food was fine/OK. The ambience: excellent. The service: offensive! Set-up: There were four women in our party - all of us (very) successful professionals in our late 20's. This is an important detail because we would not have received this service if we were a table of men... Waiter comes around. I ask about the vegetarian options. I picked the restaurant and (oops) didn't realize there was a vegetarian among us. ""Can you recommend a hearty salad?"" Waiter notes the veggie sides and says the cook might prepare a veggie entree but ""that's gonna cost extra"". We think to ourselves, hmm, that's tacky of him, but we brush it off and carry on. We look down at our menus and before we have a moment to ponder options, the waiter calls our attention back - ""Ehem, ladies, just to let you know, there's a $25 minimum per person."" Oh, I get it. We ask about the vegetarian entrees and we're cheap. Really folks, our plan was to eat the bread and split a salad amongst the four. Darn, we're caught! Wink, wink. Really, wed planned to drink at least two glasses of wine (each, just to be clear), which puts us above his tacky ""$25 minimum"". I know LA waiters sometimes live off their tips but, come on, Sterling is supposed to offer a fine dining experience. Unacceptable! The meal arrives. Stuffed, we split a dessert. Meanwhile, our waiter is concerned with getting us out of here so he can serve another party at his table. He indelicately hovers over us and says, ""Are you just gonna to sit there?"" Our expressions read, ""He did not just say that?"" I ask him to bring the check. We ponder the tip amount (given the service). He wanders back, ""Is there a math problem here?"" We've had it!! We send a rep to speak to the owner. He apologizes but still no offer to comp any part of the meal. Note: we each spent more than twice the waiter's stated minimum and we still gave the waiter 15% tip. Pros: Ambience Cons: Offensive service, parking more

Excellent Steakhouse fare 4/20/2006

Went for first time last week. I love the darkish romantic interrior. Our waitress was very knowlegable and friendly. I had a few questions about the menu and the cuts of meat and she knew what whe was talking about, very helpful. Service overall was swift and professional. Cesar salad apps were perfectly dressed and accented with flowers on the platte, a nice touch.Our.steaks arrived cooked perfectly throughout. Excellent flavor. Also had a choice of sauces, but meat was so good, that the sauces were unnecessary, but tasty still. Many terriffic sides are available. I highly recommend truffel Mac-n-cheese. Johnathan the Somelier was very helpful and friendly. He really knows his wine and no snobery at all. All in all, a great dinnner out. Not cheap, but worth it Pros: steaks, wine, ambience more

What a waste! 2/24/2006

What a waste of a meal. I seriously would rather have had splurged on alcohol than eating that awful food. Black agnus is better from what I remember as child. Lobster was so tough, my jaw ached from chewing. Calamari were heavily battered, and arrived at our table soggy. To make matters worse the waiter who would come around every 45 minutes or so, told us to spend $500 and he will get ""all us ladies through the back"", then when the bill came he said ""sorry the back is closed"". Oh dont waste your time at the CHEEZY cabana club, bunch of out of town loosers. more

Amazing Food -- But it was a Virtual Ghost Town 2/22/2006

I loved the food. The bone-in-rib-eye was great. I enjoyed the creamed corn, sauteed broccoli, & truffled mac-n-cheese. The one thing I did not understand was why the Restaurant was empty @ 8pm on Tuesday Night. Which is a shame, considering the food is great. My guess is that it is in wealthy West-Siders do not want to make the drive to Hollywood. Pros: creamed corn, sauteed broccoli, steak Cons: ambience more

If you like being ignored... 2/14/2006

Menus had no pages in them; we got no water or bread, or even saw a server for 30 minutes after being seated - then only when we complained to the hostess (who served our cocktails herself!); they were out of lobster (!); steak ordered medium arrived rare; water was rarely refilled; unused wine glasses remained on the table; when the server did meander to our table, it was only after seeing all of the older patrons (some who were seated, served, and finished in half the time) he kept insincerely apologizing for the wait, yet never cared to make up for it (save for the offer of a free ice cream sandwich after a 3 hour, 2 course meal). The atmosphere is great and the food is OK at best, but it's not enough to make up for a long night spent staring at empty plates and glasses. Pros: Beautiful decor, Friendly hostess, Good music Cons: Awful service, Average food more

Pricey, but well worth! 11/13/2005

I wasn't expecting very much going in. But to my surprise, this is a REAL steakhouse. My medium filet was cooked to perfection and the accompanying sides were fantastic, such as the au grautin potatoes. Appetizers were great too. The ambiance is very tastefully done...slightly dim with lots of open space. Service was very prompt and friendly. Lots of celebs...Matthew Perry, Bobby Brown, and Hank Azaria. Great place for groups or for a romantic date. Afterwards, we went next door to the adjoining Cabana Club and still had to wait about an hour to get in, even though we just dropped $1000 at the restaurant. Just keep in mind reservations at the restaurant does not by any means guarantee entrance into Cabana Club. Pros: Great Cuts of Meat, Prompt Service, Ambiance more

Food and Wine Pairing at its best! 9/3/2005

There is nothing like having an excellent dinner accompanied by fantastic wine in a place with great atmosphere. I have tried most of the steaks and they all have been top notch, the sides are amazing as well, especially when paired with just the right wine. I highly recommend trying the Truffle scented Macaroni and Cheese. The Sommelier Jonathan Mitchell has put together quite an impressive wine list! He absolutely knows how to pick the right wine to go with your meal and he is always happy to help. Overall, I would say this my new favorite place to go, so I would suggest you go and see for yourself! Pros: Great Menu, Great Wine List, Great Atmosphere Cons: None that I can find! more

The Best Steak in Town 8/31/2005

From start to finish Sterling is hands down the the best steakhouse in LA. The service was amazing from the attentive waiter to the Somlier that went out of his way to find me just the right glass of wine. Giant oysters are a must, but the Prime Rib is the real feast for the steak lover! The halibut is fabulous if fish is what you fancy. Going for sides definitely try the lobster mac-n-cheese and the sweet potatoe fries. The ambiance is beautiful with an open fireplace on the canapied patio and the the band playing Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra will top off this sensational steakhouse experience. Pros: Good Crowd, Valet, Beautiful more

Half Empty on a Friday - For Good Reason 8/31/2005

Sterling? Try stainless. At a $100 a meal restaurant, shouldn't the backwaiters know who gets what dish? So here's the bad news (there isn't any good): The room is a modest update from the former Sunset Room. The slight refurbishment doesn't make the place any hipper. The apps are standard. The steaks are mediocre and overpriced - $44 for a too small, incorrectly cooked Porterhouse to New York Strips that are called prime, but taste more like choice. The wine list has few, if any, reasonably priced bottles. The sommelier actually bragged about it and was ludicrously gregarious. He practically demanded a taste of the special bottle we brought, saying ""Everyone who brings in a great bottle of wine asks me to taste."" He did waive the $20 corkage fee (we had purchased three other bottles off of the list and several single glasses). Overall, a thoroughly unsatisfying experience. Cons: Overpriced, Poor Service, High Corkage more
