Staten Island 9-11 Memorial

This memorial is very tastefully done. When I first saw it, from far away I thought it looked dull. When I got closer to it and saw the names of people I knew, it had a whole different meaning. When you look up you can see the New York skyline and it brings you right back to September 11th. You immediately remember where you were, who you were with and who you lost. When you visit here, especially at night, you can see the carvings of each person lost and it's lit up from behind and it casts a shadow of that persons' profile. The resemblance is very similar to those it represents. It makes you feel like they never left, and they are always with you. If you need to remember why we are fighting to end terrorism, or you just want to pay your respects to some of those who lost their lives needlessly on September 11th, then you should visit this special place. more

A lot of memorials and monuments have been commissioned remembering the world trade center attacks on 9-11, and while the bickering over the ground zero site continues, there is a moving and beautiful memorial to visit on Staten Island. Right next to the ferry terminal (it's right outside the entrances to the terminal and the Staten Island Yankees stadium, for people getting there from the city) is a grassy walk along the water looking directly across to an unobstructed view of downtown Manhattan. Two white concrete flowing walls, reminiscent of wings, sprout up from the grass, looking like a white bird taking off towards the hole in the skyline where the towers used to be. Carved into both wings are silhouettes of the profiles of the Staten Island residents who were lost in the tragedy. There are benches for reflection and for remembering. the monument is tasteful, simple, andabove all the political bickering that is currently going on across the water. more
