Best Greek restaurant in NY 4/29/2009

As an ""authentic"" Greek (meaning born & raised in Greece), I have a special relationship with Greek restaurants in the US. Specifically, I can judge which ones serve food that is ""Greek"" only in name, and most are like that. However in Astoria there are a few restaurants that do serve good, authentic greek cuisine, and after multiple ""experimentation"" I have concluded that Stamatis (careful, the one on 23rd) is the best. You can't go wrong with most dishes and the environment is nice, the prices good. Careful though, as it can be a little too busy/crowded esp. on weekends. Pros: Food Cons: Too Popular ;) more

Freshly Prepared Daily 10/14/2008

Delicious freshly prepared foods every afternoon. Walking in passed the steam counter is nice to view all the hot foods to select from. The prices are reasonably and service at lunch time has been good consistently. Staff seems friendly. Pros: Delicious & Fresh more

One of the best taverna experiences anywhere! 6/22/2008

I think I have been enjoying meals with friends and family at Stamatis for at least 20 years. The food is usually excellent and often wildly outstanding. When they are at their best, the kitchen at Stamatis is out of this world and it seems that whoever is at the helm has been inspired by the gods themselves. (I have the same experience at the Turkish restaurant, Beyti Kebab in Weehawken.) We have celebrated so many wonderful occasions at Stamatis and always left feeling completely sated and wonderfully satisfied with the food and the service. They are extremely patient and accommodating for the large groups we tend to come with. We love the hustle and bustle of the place that could be on the waterfront of any Mediterranean city. The new location hasn't changed anything! It is still fabulous. I still the place close friends and family choose to go to right before a long journey. In fact I am leaving to go to dinner there right now to wish some cousins farewell before an extended trip to Tanzania!!! more

Best Authentic Greek Food in NYC!! 6/8/2008

This newly renovated restaurant is naturally packed because of the great food and the unbeatable prices. A down side to packed restaurants is usually bad service, but not if you ask for Pamala to serve you! You'll have the best Greek dish that you can get plus a Greek experience, miles away from Greece. All that for a great price and with very hospitable service with a beautiful smile!!!!!!! I've been to most of the restaurants in Astoria and NYC, and this one is by far the best package!!! Pros: Great Food, Great Service: Pamala, Great Prices Cons: Very busy, make sure to reserve in advance. more

Not that clean 4/12/2007

This place is a local eatery that has food triple decked on the steam table (definately not safe) I'm not sure how many times this food goes in & out of the refrigerator but what we tried wasnt as we expected. There are so many Great Greek restaurants but this one needs some cleaning. more

Stamatis takes advantage at Greek Orthodox Easter 4/23/2006

We arrived at 2pm. We ordered a salad and the traditional meal of roast lamb (menu price $12). After we finished our salad our waitress told us that they had run out of roast lamb and pastitichio. She suggested baby lamb instead (menu price $18). We said okay. The table behind us was very upset saying ""koirodevunee to kosmo"" ""they are fooling the public"" This is because they were seating people without saying they had run out of lamb--and at just 2 in the afternoon!!! When the bill came---not only did we not get what we originally wanted--roast lamb at $12, but now we were being charged not just $18 for baby lamb BUT $20 BECAUSE ""IT IS EASTER"" We are outraged that this restaurant planned so poorly on such an important holiday and ran out of the traditional food and then had the nerve to fleece us too!! Cons: They mislead customer more

Poor Unfriendly Service 11/2/2005

The cooks in the front are very friendly and helpful. Once seated the waitress took over 10 minutes to come by and only said ""you ready"". She could have cared less that we were eating in the restaurant, eventhough the service around us appeared much quicker. The saganaki was among the worst I have ever tasted, hard and rubbery, which we sent back. The skordalia, stuffed peppers and shrimp were fantastic, although the skordalia was served to us without anything to dip in it. It took another ten minutes to get some bread, and they don't have pita. The house wine was tasteless as well. All in all, if you are not Greek you will receive poor service, as everyone seated after us was being served before our order was even taken. I have been to plenty of Greek restaurants and this ranks among the worst. I will not return. Pros: fresh bread, decent prices Cons: lack-luster service more

Greek Paradise 6/5/2005

The restaurant from the outside is not much to speak of. But you realize how popular it is within the Greek community once you walk inside . . . and you know a restaurant is great when people are willing to wait outside in line to get a table. The food was excellent (everything we tried), the service was very attentive, and the bill was even better. For 6 of us the bill came out to $101 including alcohol. We all left stuff and with a smile on our face. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance more

Great Greek 6/24/2004

This is one of the restaurants that I have to eat at when I visit from Houston. The entrees are large enough to share and reasonably priced. I highly recommend sharing so that you'll have room for the complimentary dessert. It's easy to understand why my sister's Greek landlords recommend this place. Pros: large portions, reasonable price more

One of the best Greek tavernas in NYC 3/20/2003

Great variety of cooked and grilled dishes. Try the greek salad, fried zucchini, giant beans in tomato sauce and grilled octopus for starters. The grilled snapper or porgy is great. The cooked dishes vary depending on when you get there but they are generally solid. Stay away from the baby lamb chops - too small and salty for the price. You get complementary galactobouriko (custard in phyllo) for dessert which is out of this world. more
